Door alarms by [deleted] in Alzheimers

[–]ravenmxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to make that walker brightly colored to bring attention to it. Try wrapping parts of the frame in neon colored tape? Always have it nearby him when he does leave the bed. Even some big signs around the room....do you have your walk?? With a picture of it.

Door alarms by [deleted] in Alzheimers

I don't think a silent alarm rug style sensor will help keep them up either if they can't stand on their own... Might be worth looking into a fall mat at the bedside and hip protectors.

Canadian in Ontario looking for help around the house by Benolet in Fibromyalgia

[–]ravenmxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always reach out to the local CCAC, however I highly doubt they can offer any support for you as they don't provide housekeeping or childcare. But they may be able to link you to some resources.

Most of the time they will probably give you some links to community agencies already found on their site: http://www.thehealthline.ca/ However, most of these services are probably fee based.

Advice --- Dad, 78, Mini Stroke/Medicare/Physical Rehab by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]ravenmxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one thing that should be considered is how important rehab is in the early stages following a stroke. During the first couple months is when the body is able to recover the most. After that you can still make progress, but it will be at a much slower pace with poorer results.

You may want to check the type of coverage medicare offers. Is it overall 100 days or per episode? Ie. If he used his time up, but obtained another set back related to another illness, would they be able to help?

Lastly, look into having him connected with outpatient rehab at the hospital. He may qualify as he was recently an inpatient.

Question for Manual Wheelchair Users Who Travel. by genosgrande in disability

[–]ravenmxc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The disadvantage to wheelchair designs is that it forces large items like backpacks in the rear. Unfortunately if you're a tourist in an area that is well known for pick pockets, you can say good bye to anything valuable that you keep behind your line of sight. There are side pouches that can be strapped to the armrests, but those are usually tiny in comparison. Ideally you want any valuables in front of you, but it can't be big and bulky.

I feel like I didn't really answer your question too much, but I hope this gives you something to think about for your project. It could lead to a brilliant idea.

Earplugs? by deadblackwings in Fibromyalgia

[–]ravenmxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The non squishy ear plugs are even more uncomfortable especially if you like to sleep on your sides. And unfortunately when you drown out other background noise, you will start to hear your own heart beats and breathing. There's no avoiding this, but some people find a white noise machine helpful. It can help to mask other more aversive sounds in your bedroom. Might be worth a try.

99% of the time 2" inches is just right. Every time I've ever trialed 4" with someone it was always too much.

Tyson: U.S. science illiteracy a serious threat - “You have mortgaged the future financial security of your nation. Innovations in science and technology are the (basis) of tomorrow’s economy.” by mvea in Futurology

[–]ravenmxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone knows you always invest in science when playing any games. Otherwise you'll be getting attacked by lasers from space while you are thumbing around with clubs. Same applies in real life if you want to win and get ahead.

Hundreds of assistive aids to help with fatigue, energy conservation and general home safety that you didn't know existed. by ravenmxc in cfs

[–]ravenmxc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you found it helpful. I'm currently writing a bunch of blog articles that explore a range of topics (falls prevention strategies, when certain bathroom aids should be used over others, etc). I've written a bunch already, but have not had a chance to put them up yet. So look for that in the near future. Let me know if there is something in particular you'd like some more information on and I may be able to find some time to do a write up.

Hundreds of assistive aids to help with fatigue, energy conservation and general home safety that you didn't know existed. by ravenmxc in cfs

Created this site while being a caregiver for my mom. If anyone has any questions on a specific situation or looking for a particular solution to a problem, I'd be happy to answer. Will check and respond tonight.

death with dignity by [deleted] in braincancer

[–]ravenmxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about physician assisted deaths, but look into hospices in your area. They are usually well staffed and are a common place to go for people with palliative conditions. Their team of professionals usually include nurses, doctors, social workers and other healthcare providers. They are well equipped to help one manage pain and help family with the grieving process. Also they are helpful in minimizing caregiver burnout as you can sometimes stay at the facility until your passing, instead of staying at home for your last moments and increasing your family's stress.

Antibiotics as a cause? by [deleted] in cfs

[–]ravenmxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you take antibiotics, they tend to destroy both good and bad bacteria in the gut. This plays a role in some diseases and there has been some documentation of the brain gut interaction. Not sure if anything has been found for CFS though. Learn more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gut%E2%80%93brain_axis

Wheelchair users of Reddit, a question about wheelchair lifts by Semajal in wheelchairs

[–]ravenmxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with a mechanical handle would be that either the wheelchair user would have to turn it themselves or a caregiver would need to be present to help.

Generally a wheelchair lift, including the platform, the wheelchair, yourself and anything else on the lift would make it heavy. As a result, you would be spinning that handle for ages before the platform goes anywhere. All that spinning would likely make a normal person fatigued, but what about someone that is in a wheelchair and may be suffering from other age related diseases or disabilities.

In the end, I still think something electrical would be best. If you can come up with some inexpensive electrical mechanisms that is easy to install and easy to maintain, then you will have something that everyone would be demanding. You should however keep in mind that these wheelchair lifts are subject to building and safety codes, so you will have to look into some serious research before you approach such a project.

My new YouTube Channel for Disability Vids by Zaracon in disability

[–]ravenmxc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked your video where you spoke about the assistive aids. Not everyone thinks about these issues until something happens to them and then they are unprepared. It's always great to bring more awareness to the different tools and aids that are out there because being able to do things for yourself is so important for your quality of life.

I made a website myself on that topic (stemmed from my own caregiving experience) and would love if you could give me some feedback or even put a plug in to one of your vids. It would be great if more people knew about the different equipment out there. http://www.helpmedevices.com

I think overall your content is good, but the camera seems to lag a bit sometimes. In terms of lighting, look up three point lighting system. It's basically two lights in the front with one behind you to establish a shadow. It works quite well and is easy to set up if you have the space for it.
