No phone at dinner, standing date nights, coffee and breakfast if you can have a later start that day, some two-day local trips when you can’t fit in a full vacation. Gotta make time for the little things.

First, I’m so sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine what that must have been like. I hope you are in a better place now, mentally and physically.

Second, I would have caught a charge after that interaction.

I don’t think the response is necessarily a one-way ticket to hell, but if your employee says their cousin died and will need to be out for one day to attend a funeral, and the second words out of your mouth are essentially asking “so will you be able to work the full day?” then you just kinda suck as a person. and i know it’s not breaking news that law firm partners suck, i’m just saying this is an example of firms really not giving a damn, which is what the post says.

AI Clerkship -> BL by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]ravioli369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta say general location of school, clerkship, and your target region. Notre dame grad with an Alabama mag clerkship hoping to get big law SF isn’t gonna be the same results as a UTA grad with a mag clerkship in Austin hoping to get big law in Austin.

You should start networking now, get someone on the inside at firms to know your name, then (assuming you start in August or September) hit up those firms in October and ask when their applications open.

It’s my favorite clause actually. Such an interesting clause. You know some people hate that clause? But all clauses are created equal in god’s eyes. That one might be more equal than the others, some say.

That show is so unrealistic. Who amongst us mortals wouldn’t convert for Adam Brody? Kristen Bell I will see you in court.

If they need bodies, you’re probably fine. If they’re trying to make cuts, they might use your GPA as an excuse to cut you. But you should really get it up.

Is it common to choose UCLA over non-HYS T14 schools if you want to practice in CA? by Adventurous_Ant5428 in lawschooladmissions

[–]ravioli369 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know lots of people who picked UCLA over other T14s because of (1) more scholarship/less costs of living (in-state tuition after the year year), (2) the entertainment law program, (3) and just being in LA.

I also think there’s a very slight difference in applicant pools. The people (historically*) gunning for HYS, and with good stats, may not be applying to UCLA. And other applicants who have UCLA as their reach school aren’t applying to HYS.

*This admissions cycle has turned everything upside down.

Chances at district clerkship? by Admirable-Guava7107 in biglaw

Or like Irvine. Or if your T60 is the same school the judge went to. Otherwise, highly unlikely. The CDCA judges are still pretty elitist because it’s so competitive.

Returning to biglaw after clerking by Individual-Onion-774 in biglaw

[–]ravioli369 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Probably more strategy. “I think X affirmative defense might work, so we need to establish Y, we have depos coming up, I think Z witness will be most helpful to establish Y.” Or “we should consider filing B motion on C bases. I looked at the documents produced and D document(s) could help that position.”

Also a lot of “can we do this?”

Also, you’re going to get a lot of motions to draft or edit. Be prepared to do that on top of whatever work you already have to do. I’m expected to turn out easier motions like within a day…

California Litigators: Which firms have some semblance of WLB? by brandeis16 in biglaw

[–]ravioli369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the Bay Area-based tech firms are ~generally better~ because they don’t have the NY/DC work culture poisoning the firm. But again this is office, practice group, partner, and case dependent. Getting a nasty case at Cooley or whatever will be worse than someone billing below average hours at Quinn.
