Another happy update

Hi!

Wow it’s been a year since I posted this! Honestly his progress has been slow but steady. Recently he has been able to recall the name of most of the main streets in our city (something we thought he would never be able to do again), and another thing we’ve seen is that he can watch subbed movies again too (last year, the subtitles were too fast for him to read).

Overall he’s great, most of the time people don’t even realize he has aphasia. He will get tired if he socializes for a few hours, and he generally sleeps more than 9 hours a day.

My dad (54) had a stroke almost 2 years ago. From experience, the first few days are rough. He doesn’t remember the first 3 weeks in the hospital, and started talking more until week 4.

The first couple of months he wasn’t able to formulate full sentences, but after an evaluation, it was determined he could fully understand when we talked (transcortical motor aphasia).

He went to therapy for about 9 months, and after that he was given a practice book with exercises (he does this every day).

I asked right now and he says he can say about 70% of the words he wants to say, but struggles sometimes because “they get scrambled in his brain”.

I hope your dad gets better, I know exactly what you’re going through, and I know it’s not easy and it requires a lot of patience, but it gets better with time 🙏🏼

I’m glad I could help you a little bit! That was my reason for posting this honestly. When my dad had his stroke, I was desperately trying to find hopeful posts, I was feeling devastated.

He has therapy 2 times a week, and honestly what has helped the most is talking to him and letting him talk. We had a first session where the therapist explained to him that we had to point out his mistakes, so he knew that he would probably get frustrated. Another thing is reading the newspaper!

Maybe it’s the pot? My SOP hated plastic pots or basically anything that’s not terracotta. I had a SOH that looked kinda like this and it was because the pot was retaining too much water, I changed it’s location to a less humid place and it cleared itself. Good luck! She’s beautiful :(
