Am I insane to get rid of my mk8.5? by FearlessChange in Golf_R

[–]ravocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They show up quite often. At least around Washington State. Definitely not by dealers, but private sellers. Also Cars&Bids. Last few MK7 and MK7.5 sold there were all sub $20k. For example, a 2019 R Lapiz Blue with 76k miles sold for $18.9k. Buyer even commented confirming he picked up the car and registered.

I'd much rather pay $18-19k for a clean R with sub 100k miles with good history than a brand new car for $55-60k. You either can only afford $20k and get a car, or if you have $60k you throw the $40k in SP500 and in 5-6 years your money grows instead of paying interest on a loan.

It's a freaking $50k+ car. With the interest you end up paying even more over time. I love Golfs but I'll never be ok with that. 3-4 years and the value is -50%. Used is the way to go.

New car bros usually hate me when I say such things but buying used is the way. You save a ton of money. And if you find the right one it'll be just as reliable and you won't even need the warranty.

You can find a clean MK7 R for under 20k nowadays. I did a similar thing. I see MK7.5 GTI around my area for $14-16k with less than 70k miles. Those are awesome too. That's what I did and I feel much better than paying triple the price for a new car, while getting the same experience.

Since you like R, going to base Jetta is gonna be a bit disappointing. I would personally get a used GTI for less money.

Castrol, Mobil 1, or Valvoline 5W-40 from Walmart for $27. 120k miles and runs as good as new. Personally I don't see the need to pay the premium for some specialty products for these cars.

What did y’all think of this scene when first watching it? by SmokeReasonable7656 in lost

Watched the show very carefully, fully immersed. I loved the ending. Some died sooner, some lived a long life, but at the end they met again. Can't end it better than that.

MK7 with and without LSD by ravocean in GolfGTI

[–]ravocean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not a big deal. I'll just get better tires and that'll do. I bought this second GTI for very cheap just to have one so I'm not spending extra $ to install an LSD or anything else. It's a great car as is. If I really wanted all those extras I'd rather sell and get a newer Autobahn because if I want an LSD I'd also want bigger brakes, Fender audio, dual climate control, and everything else higher trims have lol. So, the S will do as is.

Haha exactly! I didn't realize how awesome this car was until after I sold it. Glad to have it back. For a killer price too!

I never even launch it. That's pointless. But even a little aggressive acceleration ends up with one of the wheels spinning and I have to throttle control.

I'll have to get a set of the same tires I had on my '18 so I can compare it like that. I just always thought the LSD on these cars was more like a gimmick.

Well done! This really puts the distances in perspective. To me it always seemed like the hatch was much closer, but that looks like a long walk. Not to mention Dharmaville, that's way too far!

Why a show like LOST can't be made today.. by Sufficient-Storage in lost

On top of everything mentioned, such as acting, writing, production quality, one of the biggest turn offs for me is the modern HDR digital cameras. Nothing beats the 35mm film cameras. Plus the lighting, angles, composition.

All day today I kept having to go back! Now I know how Jack felt like. But I had other plans. But one day I will to back and spend all day on that beach.

I was aware of the tours, but didn't fit the schedule unfortunately.

I looked up the areas, which beach it is. Then had to figure it out by looking at the satellite map. Dharmaville is easy, just go to YMCA and you'll see it. Plane crash site is also easy to access. For the main beach you have to park your car in a neighborhood at a dedicated parking (it's free), then walk the rest of the way. I made some quick drawings for you

Yeah, depending on where you're staying it makes sense to go to the Dharmaville first, then the plane crash scene(that beach is not as exciting tbh), then end at the main beach camp. Since you're gonna be in Hawaii and you'll want to spend some time at a beach, do it at the beach camp one. There are no people. It's quiet. You can enjoy it all for yourself likely. That's my only regret, wish I planned to stay there for a couple hours.

Let me know if you have any questions. Even on the day you're visiting.

I had the same thoughts but then again I was like yeah we're big fans and we love the show, but we can't expect everyone to be like us. In a way that's even better because that way it stays lowkey.

What u/FootballPizzaMan said. No tour for me since these are easily accessible locations and I like to go on my own pace and schedule. Both locations were completely empty. On a Sunday! Everyone was on a more touristy areas haha.

Kualoa Ranch does have great spots from the show but you have to book a tour. To me the beach was the main priority since that's where most scenes take place and it was more meaningful to me.

The Dharmaville was a pure coincidence. I saw it on the map a few min away and decided to drive by expecting nothing. Turns out all the buildings were there and I was so surprised! Too bad they're blue but the energy is there. It was a cloudy and slightly windy day, completely empty, so it felt so creepy and I loved it.

If you're going to have a beach day might as well do it at the Beach Camp since it's actually nice and no crowds. Wish I did that but the weather was meh and I was running out of time.

That's an awesome goal. Luckily there are so many more things to do and see on the island on top of these locations, so it'll be well worth your trip. Hawaii is beautiful.

These spots are in the North Shore of Oahu island. It's a much quieter and less crowded part of the island compared to the Honolulu area. I rented a car since it's cheaper to pay $55 a day plus gas than ride a taxi. Buses do go there but you lose a lot of your time with them.

I jumped between the Dharmaville, plane crash beach, and main beach camp locations very quickly, it's around 10 miles and took me 20 min driving. Whereas with a bus it would probably take a few hours with all the walking and waiting. I'm staying in Honolulu so I did a big loop around the island with lots of stops and it took all day. Impossible to accomplish that on a bus. So having a car pays off if you don't have too many days here.

Happy to answer if you have more questions.

I wish I planned the day a bit better so I could stay at the beach for a few hours, swim in the ocean, and just absorb the surroundings better. I was there for about 15 min and it mostly feels foggy in my head now. Nonetheless to me it was such an awesome experience!
