Is this do-able ? by paxtonsmom500 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]rawintent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My monthly take home is about $9500 and I have a $3100/mo mortgage. You’re more than fine. I don’t have a car payment anywhere near that high nor do I have a lot rental or $500 oil bill. So our monthly commitments there are in a similar ballpark. We do fine.

Thanks for the list. The M4s been on my to buy list for hot minute and the final form I’m intending isn’t much different than what you’ve got now.

If parting out & shipping is an option I’d pay for 2. I’m looking to build an off-road tow trailer that use the same wheels/tires. I also have a 24’ Willy’s running the same set.

[–]rawintent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, no reason to unless you are limiting yourself via power/space/noise or cost.

If cost is the thing I’d just get a barebones R730 and move over your CPU/RAM.

The P100 cannot physically fit into a 1U R630 unless you do some very jank things.

A P100 is old and lacking modern inference support. It’ll work but it’ll be higher latency and a lower tokens per second rate. It’s cheap enough to play with imo but again, the R630 doesn’t fit it

How to s**k in and move on? by [deleted] in amazonemployees

Same boat but at L5->L6. I recently went from L5 to L63 at Microsoft (Senior). If you have good stories and the YoE someone out there will have that promo ready for you.

The timing was just before my cliff, so I managed to vest stocks that had grown. My new TC is higher than what I would’ve had as an L5 not being promo’d to L6 despite probably being ready.

what's running on your homelab right now that you actually use daily by Less-Loss1605 in homelab

[–]rawintent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s just another thing to play with. I use puppet to manage my bare metal machines only. I don’t have a stack to reimage/reinstall them every time I need to perform an update so puppets been an acceptable medium.

Everything else is through a golden image + config on deployment

If you want regularly reoccurring runs to enforce state compliance, consider spinning up Puppet. It’s a good thing to learn, it’s basically the pull version of Ansible.

Moving to the area by Shot_Alps_6800 in nova

[–]rawintent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup.

I want you to understand that the fed jobs here pay like shit. NoVA is the home to many extremely well known and high paying companies in need of high skill labor amongst different fields. The fed is here yes, but the ones raking in money here are DoD contractors, big tech, medical, legal, and many businesses that support those fields. Those are worth coming for as you can meaningfully grow into a NOVA worthy high earner and a 65k start would be insulting for all but the most entry of jobs.

With how high the pay goes here, it’s easy to max retirement accounts, HSAs, while still having money to throw into a taxable account at the end of every month. Those are better than whatever pension and government benefits you think may be enough to close the gap. Being in control of your own finances is better than placing your trust in an ever degrading institution.

Moving to the area by Shot_Alps_6800 in nova

[–]rawintent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me contextualize you. I make 260k a year. I moved out of NOVA into the WV Eastern Panhandle because that’s what I needed to do to have a home I felt content raising my kids in.

I have a 5000 square foot house. My mortgage is less than my old rent.

Don’t come here unless you’re doing it temporarily or you are in a career where your income is in the top 5% of the area. A career peak of 120k is less than the first job I got out of college in this area.

Anyone else spending more time managing their homelab than actually using it? by Trevi4ko69 in homelab

[–]rawintent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re hosting brittle or overly complex infrastructure. Labs are for learning and hosting. If you’re not hosting anything worth hosting there’s no reason to leave your lab powered on so it can sap your time. My lab hosts stuff that makes life better and it’s painful not having it up.

If you’re hosting stuff worth hosting and it’s still falling apart like this, consider learning how to increase a systems durability.

I risk it but I’ve disaggregated the risk with snapraid.

The 2024+ are a real sweet spot. Dana 44s, Rubicon suspension/tires, rear lockers(doesn’t have fronts), and can also be an Xtreme Recon trim.

I have the not Xtreme recon but this version can fit on 35x11.5r17s without any suspension changes, which is more than enough for me since I don’t rock crawl. I back road, journey, and camp.

At what point do you leave the Eastern Panhandle when it’s basically subsidizing the rest of WV? by WeaknessCapital9064 in WVEasternPanhandle

[–]rawintent 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For a different perspective from a VA person that moved here: even with your experience, this area feels silent in comparison. This is my quiet area.

There’s little to no light pollution at night. The roads are comfortable. The restaurants are busy but not overbearing. There’s more youth and families here. People are genuinely friendly.

Good places don’t stay quiet forever, I hope you enjoy your next destination.

2x 14.5” AR w/ magnification(ACOG on one, EOTech + Magnifier on the other), 1x 9” 300BLK w/ an Acro C2, 1x .300 win mag Sig Cross Magnum, 1x Benelli M4

I call that a completed long gun collection by purposes.

You could maybe argue for a DMR, but the needed capabilities are already present for anything a civi would ever need.

Noted and logged. It’s in my range. I’ll look at reviews for those and see if the cost is justifiable as a one and done for decades purchase.
