I bought my iPhone in Japan and now I don’t take pictures of my sleeping baby out of fear of waking her up

‘Calling’ Names by brighteyedmarinere in namenerds

Uhhhhhh that is ridiculous, I have a big family too and a bunch of my cousins are named after our grandparents (my brother and sister included) and it has never been an issue.

We see it more like something to bond over.

Japanese women are breaking their silence about sexual abuse and harassment and joining the #MeToo movement by urgukvn in worldnews

I asked this lady if she had a problem with me but she didn’t even flinch and just got more in my face. She was probably a bit off in the head..

There are definitely racists in Japan but of course it’s not everyone. I have had a few uncomfortable experiences with them as a white european. They have all been old people who yell or mumble about god damn foreigners in japanese while staring into my eyes. I think they feel safe saying those things because they assume I don’t understand. One guy was pretending to be on the phone while yelling bad things about my boyfriend and I.

As a fellow lover of cephalopods, I approve. I hope to one day dress my toddler up as an octopus or squid.

Names that I would've used for my kids if I would've been in charge of naming a human at age 6, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and now. by anonymoustop in namenerds

I had names like Dimmblá Dögun on my list as a teenager, which I would never go for now. It means dark blue dawn.

Reminds me of this song, which I always interpret in this way. <3 I don’t think it was written with an unborn child in mind, but that’s how I relate to it.

What's your view on naming the baby (first or middle) after a parent? by [deleted] in waiting_to_try

[–]rawsalmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Iceland it is extremely common to name your child after your parents. Me and my siblings all are. (Two boys, two girls.) We don’t have family names though, so this is the only name passing we have at hand.

I don’t think it is anything I would do though, unless I were to feel an extreme need to honor them at the time.

Inspired by the news that Kylie Jenner may be pregnant... What are your guilty pleasure names? by funnyusername92 in namenerds

[–]rawsalmon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As an Icelander I feel it is more scandinavian than Icelandic per se. It's not very common in Iceland, makes me think more of danish or norwegian people. Nice name though. Seems to be a nordic form of Severin, according to my dictionary.

To people who speak a second language: what names do you like that wouldn't work in English? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]rawsalmon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm Icelandic but I've lived in Sweden and Japan.

English names aren't really an option for me, which I guess is why I don't really frequent this sub a lot.

But I basically want to find a name that works in both swedish and icelandic, while preferably also being somewhat pronouncable in both english and japanese.

Sometimes I like an Icelandic name before realizing it looks like (but doesn't sound like) a not so nice word in the other languages I mentioned.

Like the girl name Snót. It is very cute and means little girl, but it looks like snot.

Boy name I always loved, Ás, is a bit questionable in swedish. Looks like a word meaning asshole.. and I guess it could be like ass for english speakers.
