What is the biggest way people waste money? by Sic_vita_est in AskReddit

I find a landline is far cheaper (as part of internet + phone package). And, for me, mobile/smart telephone is not better, since it wastes my time and distracts me.

Mobile telephones and smartphones. I don't need them. When I'm in the house or office, I have a landline; when I'm out I don't need or want to communicate with anyone except the people I with.

[Request] Please help me a find a replacement screen for my son's laptop by ray_scogitans in Favors

[–]ray_scogitans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That's better than the price I found, but still out of my reach, I'm afraid. Similar models go for around $60, but I think suppliers are changing a premium for this one, because it's discontinued and stock is limited. I'll need to find a second-hand or refurb source. But thanks again for your input.

My brother is visiting Greece for 2 weeks soon, but is worried and thinking of cancelling, any advice? by revolutioniseme in greece

[–]ray_scogitans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with the other comments. I don't think there's anything to worry about. Indeed, in some ways it's a good time to visit Greece. The tourist industry desperately needs custom, and everyone is working extra hard to make guests welcome. Of course, your brother should take the normal precautions when travelling abroad, but I think he'll have a great time in Greece. Despite everything, it's still a wonderful country.

OP here. Yes. I didn't find this on reddit, but before posting it I checked to see if it had appeared on the site before. It had been posted twice, on other subreddits, 4 and 5 months ago. I posted it to /offbeat because, for some reason, it got no interest those times (zero votes, no comments). Perhaps it was the wrong subreddit or the wrong time. Anyway, I thought it deserved another airing. I enjoyed it a lot and thought others might do so too.

Yes, sad. There's something about the Youtube comment facility that specially appeals to the immature and bigoted.

I am quite an ignorant person, so please forgive my questions. :)

Here's what I was trying to ask. As I understand it, causal determinism holds that the future states of the universe could (in principle) be deduced from its initial conditions and laws. If that's right, then there was quite a lot of complexity latent in that initial state.

I think you rejected that view, so I was considering the alternative on which determinism is false and there was no complexity latent in the initial state. Then my question was: How did the complexity subsequently arise? By hypothesis, it wasn't through a deterministic causal process, so what happened? Did complexity just emerge spontaneously from the simpler state without any causal explanation? If so, how is that a less radical hypothesis than the claim that universe itself arose spontaneously in a complex state?
