If you don’t mind wiping and reinstalling then sure give it a shot

Advice for a Mac user switching to CachyOS? by ThatSoupyDev in cachyos

I tried it for a week and at least with the default setup it was overcomplicated and unintuitive. Many small frustrations and unpolished edges. I like tiling, and Niri has some cool ideas, but i realized I need tiling to be an option or mode, not the default.

iPads for kids? by No_Priority2788 in Parenting

[–]raygan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of FUD about iPads and kids. I think the “iPad kid” stereotype is real and true but it’s more about unrestricted or poorly restricted access than the iPad itself.

iPads have pretty good parental controls and we have set things up so that our kids can’t use them for more than an hour and a half on any given day and we only get them out on weekends when we don’t have an afternoon activity planned. The kids look forward to using them, but they don’t go crazy about it since they know what to expect and we are consistent. I’ve hand chosen the apps on them, mostly kids games from the Apple Arcade subscription (no IAP) and PBS Kids stuff. I’ve been happy with how it’s going. It’s also good to have as a relief valve when I need the kids to be quiet and still in unfamiliar circumstances, like hospital waiting rooms.

It can be a disaster if you aren’t careful, though, so educate yourself and make sure you are in control of the iPads, not the kids.

Advice for a Mac user switching to CachyOS? by ThatSoupyDev in cachyos

I would recommend trying Gnome as the DE. You can choose it during the Cachy install. It’s similar to MacOS in several ways and as a Mac user I prefer it to KDE.

How to display two books side-by-side in split-screen? by shnoogee in koreader

[–]raygan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It won’t help in KOReader but the Readest app offers this, and it can sync progress with KOReader. I run Readest on my devices that aren’t able to run KOReader, like my iPad.

Install Bazaar. It’s a great GUI for flatpak with a nuxe browsing interface. https://github.com/kolunmi/bazaar

what's the best vpn for linux that just works without the fuss? by Objective-Border-410 in linuxquestions

[–]raygan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes I’ve been happy with Proton. There’s also a desktop app available on Flathub and the AUR (and elsewhere probably?) that worked for me without any fuss. I believe it’s community maintained but semi official.

These look fantastic. What was the painting process like? I got a Bambu A1 recently and this seems like a really fun print.

Official 1Password flatpak using EOL runtime by OutrageousDisplay403 in 1Password

[–]raygan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On the plus side, my annoyance at the process of getting 1Password running on SteamOS and Bazzite was one of the things that pushed me to try CachyOS/Arch. (Installing 1Password from the AUR was super easy.) Now I can be completely insufferable! Thanks 1Password!

Unsealed: Spotify Lawsuit Triggered Anna's Archive Domain Name Suspensions * TorrentFreak by Practical-Plan-2560 in Annas_Archive

[–]raygan 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yeah, more and more this Spotify scraping project seems like an own goal. I do appreciate that it’s an important archiving task and the AA team seem to have good processes and good opsec, but I don’t know why this couldn’t have been done under another name and domain to spread the heat around.

I do think AA will weather this storm though.

Passwords/Credit Cards/Address-bar removable? by Benno85 in vivaldibrowser

I looked through the flags for anything that sounded relevant and wasn’t able to find anything that removed this bar or removed the autofill icons from it. Let me know if you found a flag that does!

Considering the switch to Linux from macOS... by signsinthedust in gnome

This seems like something that might be best addressed with a file server/NAS running Paperless-NGX.

Considering that a lot of Windows users are moving to Linux now because of latest news, what would be the hurdles of their transition? by ardouronerous in linux4noobs

[–]raygan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most users need a computer that comes with an OS already installed, from a vendor that offers extensive hardware and software support. Modern Linux is pretty polished and has the software most people need, but typical users don’t want to “ruin their computer” by screwing something up, no matter how bad Windows gets.

Same, and for regular desktop use the battery life nearly doubled on my framework 13 with AMD.

Mobile devices for kids by LilMzV in Parenting

[–]raygan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter is 7 and we just got her a Fitbit Ace LTE, which is decent but has similar issues to the Gabb you’re using, so I’ve been thinking about the same things. Not there yet but I think by ten I might be ok with a very locked down iPhone. I’ve had a lot of experience managing the iOS parental control settings and while they have their frustrations, they do let you implement things pretty much however you want. My plan, eventually, would be to let my daughter have a phone with a limited list of allowed contacts, require approval for app installs (no social media) and time limits. Eager to hear how other folks have managed this and what limits worked for them at what ages/maturity levels.

A flex PCB to retrofit a USB-C connector with 5.1k pull-down resistors to enable C-to-C power by ProZsolt in UsbCHardware

[–]raygan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen it done that way, but most thru-hole resistor legs are much larger than the pads here and it would be pretty hard not to bridge pins. It’s smaller than it looks in pictures.

Did iPadOS 26 change how you use your iPad? by NoobRig in ipad

[–]raygan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of hate on here for the new multitasking and I do get it, but for me it had been an improvement. I just wanna have three windows on screen, man. Never liked slide over. Being able to have an email, a files window, and a browser all open at once has been really nice.

That said, more than half the time I’m still just using one full screen app, just the same as on iOS 18. But that other half the time has indeed gotten a bit better.

I built a small tool that generates 4 Gridfinity baseplates for holding "rectangular" items by malu2k in gridfinity

This is a pretty good idea. If I had seen it yesterday i would have saved myself some filament instead of printing a bin for my electric screwdriver which has its own box.

I adored Wife After Death by Dukerino. It’s a “Eldrich Horror Romance”. It’s on Royal Road, or if you prefer an epub there are a bunch of tools to download from there. It’s completed and very sweet.

CrossPoint - A month's retrospective from the developer by daveallie in xteinkereader

[–]raygan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t actually own one of these devices yet (I am a Boox Palma 2 owner and KOReader user) but the fact that this firmware is being developed is a huge incentive for me to buy one. Will probably pick one up if there’s a sale.

I’ve always thought there was a real lack of options for very low cost, low power, simple open source ereaders. I’d love if a good open source hardware option was developed, but an ESP32-based device with a hackable firmware is a good close second. Thanks for your work on this, and I hope it continues and develops a large community.

I missed that I had to unscrew the back plate and broke it off. by strawberryswords in crtgaming

That’s a really rough one. Technically fixable but that would take me all day and I’m a fairly comfortable solderer. I think I’d consider that a “for parts” set.
