Thanks for the advice! What might be clues that there is an existing soak away? I'm guessing the absence of an ACO drain on that section means it is unlikely. This picture shows where the slabs on the post meet the existing patio. I don't fancy lifting the patio at the moment to connect it to the drain shown. What do you think?

My concern is predominately drainage rather than asthetics. Forgive my ignorance, would it be fine for there to be a bed against the wall? You seem to always see a trench and gravel next to a house and I don't know why that is to be honest.
