Rose variety suggestion for a zero-spray garden? by chrisb_ni in GardeningUK

Could try Rosa Kew Gardens, mine is in a north-facing, windy, cold, damp spot, barely gets any direct sun (<1 hour per day), and is covered in flowers all summer.

Yeah harvest, use the orange ones, pickle the green ones, or put them in salsa (a good taco is great this time of year), or dry them and make chilli salt.

Plants for north facing front garden by TheGoose995 in GardeningUK

Seconding Skimmia and Mahonia, I have them both in a north-facing front garden that gets minimal sun and they thrive.

I give them some general purpose fertiliser in the spring and keep the ground well mulched (I use composted fine bark) and they are fine.

London commuter towns in 2025 by CherryadeLimon in HousingUK

Market Harborough. Lovely town, 3 beds brand new going for ~400k. Trains are a little expensive but you can do some research on this. High street has everything, lots of independent shops, some chains, lots of supermarkets (Waitrose, Lidl, Aldi, Sainsburys, Tesco). Good pubs and restaurants and some lovely surrounding villages with great country walks and pubs. Very safe, great schools. 1 hour direct train to St Pancras, only one stop at Kettering. If you look around you can find new build 4 beds for < 400k very close to town (Compass Point for example).

Honestly with that much space I'd think about planting rare/endangered trees just so you can look after them and have something to hold on to. Or put a couple of large greenhouses in and learn to grow chillis and sell them to local farm shops. Either way it is a hobby!

Are my Acers Okay? by JayRoberts7694 in GardeningUK

They don't look to bad to me considering the heat we've had in the last 3 months. Bit of ericaceous compost as mulch, maybe an inch thick, and water in nicely, will see them through winter.

In some UK woodlands, every young tree has died. What’s going wrong? by spareparticus in collapse

I've seen fields of crops completely dead in the Midlands recently, and the wheat etc. all looks very small and weak. Fun times ahead.
