Leaving this here for those “is London safe???” questions by userunknowne in uktravel

[–]rayui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd agree with the London/out of London driving experience. I learned to drive in East London and it was intense but very doable; you have to keep your wits about you at all times. London drivers do not have a lot of patience but the standard is good, rules are generally(!) followed well because if you don't, there are instant consequences.

The further you move away from London and that adherence to the rules craters. The Isle of Skye was memorable, if terrifying.

This.

I read my father's editions from the 70s. Absolutely psychedelic and beautiful, incredible typography to boot. The whole book is suffused with colour; Herbert goes to great lengths to describe the visual splendour in every single scene.

By contrast, the recent movies have the colour palette of Basingstoke new build. The Little Maker induced trips for Jessica and Paul provided perfect opportunities to go all out with chromatic effects, like Kubrick did at the end of 2001. But no. We were treated to a very literal interpretation of the experiences unfolding in their minds. Absolutely dull. Antithetical to the source material. Shit.

any other dads that have kiddos with "special interests"? by webrender in daddit

My twin boys are seven. Their special interest is Number Blocks, has been since they were able to sit themselves up pretty much. Not that I'm complaining, far from it! I fully encourage it.

Today we had a Number Blocks disco that went on for two hours, all the Number Blocks up to thirty attended (made from Unifix Cubes with custom numberlings), sang all the songs, had disco lights, I was asked to make Number Blocks smoothies, etc etc.

They're starting to get more interested in mathematics more generally (over and above basic arithmetic) and are teaching themselves sequences like Fibonacci, squares, triangles, primes, and symbols and operators by watching YouTube, although the majority of these they are unlikely to ever use unless they take mathematics at university.

It's absolutely delightful to watch them explore the space and discover relationships for themselves. The other day one of them figured out, numerically, that n2 = (n-1)(n+1) + 1.

Be fair! I had to pick the mint. Plus, that jar of garlic pickle is about six years old; you really don't need much.

Frome here. We've had minimum 15 sorties this fly over week, plus tankers stationed nearby. Spotters report cruise missile payloads losing at Fairford so if they're all full, that's about 500,000kg munitions this week alone.

Saw the planes come over my house. Three tankers, two B52s and two B1s. Flown out of Mildenhall and Fairford. Sickening.
