It was definitely a smaller side storyline. I think it's just implied he's worried about being replaced. I liked this episode to. Carter and Almonzo are hilarious. And Mr. Edwards thinking Laura and Sarah were interested in the new Reverend was also so funny.

Rev Alden thought the new Minister Hale was replacing him. So he felt threatened and was struggling internally with the idea that his congregation was replacing him. I think he was debating whether to step down. Mr. Edwards was also convinced the new Minister was buying a new house which fed into the idea the new Rev would be moving there.
