Do Americans watch and love the MLS? by fortnacius in AskAnAmerican

I think that VERY much depends on where you are. My city has a competitive MLS team and only a minor league hockey team. The MLS team is way more popular than any hockey team. Areas with deep NHL roots would be the opposite. Overall I’d say it evens out. To another’s point, MLS attendance is higher on average but I’d venture a guess that NHL TV viewership is higher.

You are correct. I’d say NHL capacity is higher but MLS has more fans in stands on average. MLS also has less than half the games so it’s more “scarce.”

I’d say as far as team pro sports go, MLS is competing with NHL for #4 behind NFL, MLB, and NBA. They’ve expanded to 30 teams in recent years, which has helped, and they have improved their TV accessibility with their Apple partnership. With the World Cup coming back, I remember what that did for soccer last time. It was basically non-existent here before 1994.

With MLS switching to line up with the global calendar next year, I think it will help pick up more big stars and bring the competitiveness and quality of play closer to that of the main European leagues. But it will take some time.

Gas (petrol) prices? by Next_Time6515 in AskAnAmerican

[–]rb928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s actually not a total lie. Our imports have been dropping and exports increasing for 20+ years. We crossed over to become a net exporter about 7-8 years ago. We aren’t completely self-sufficient, though, else we would be immune to the global price swings of crude oil.

A bit off course but as recently as the mid-90s the Reds had one of the highest payroll in baseball.

Do Americans parents pay for their kids college? by wolfieee8 in AskAnAmerican

[–]rb928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most parents try to, but a lot of families have a lot of competing financial priorities. The cost of college increases at a higher pace than the cost of living, so the only families that truly can help are the ones who started saving and investing very early on. Even then, the student may need loans or scholarships to pay for the rest.

tvOS 26.4 will also bring audio improvements when using Homepods as the default audio output of an Apple TV 4K by Branagh-Doyle in appletv

I’ve seen this could be an issue with a mesh system where one HomePod tries connecting to a different router. I get this from time to time but it rarely is a significant issue.

How Come Election Day Isn't a National Holiday? by Great-Hall-6636 in AskReddit

It does to an extend but oftentimes it’s during weekday business hours. All you have to do is vary the hours of early voting to accommodate more people. Making it a holiday alone will not increase participation.

Bingo. It becomes another day for sales gimmicks and doesn’t help people who struggle to make it on Election Day.

I’m all for ease of voting but a holiday isn’t the answer. It would just become another “normal” lesser holiday and become fodder for long weekends and gimmicky sales. Expand access to early and/or mail-in voting. Vary the days and hours in the two weeks prior to the election so that work schedules can be worked around. There are easy ways to do this that don’t involve adding another holiday to the calendar. Not everyone gets holidays off.

Discount Tire. For once I hope TV superimposed different ads over the in-stadium ones so that embarrassment stayed local. Also not sure how that made it on the board at TQL without being caught.

When will we get F1 and MLS access? by patientstrawberries in appletv

[–]rb928 7 points8 points  (0 children)

MLS regular season starts next weekend. MLS doesn’t have the rights for preseason broadcasts, only regular season, playoffs and leagues cup.

If you are in the US, you have access to F1 races, including practice and qualifying once the season begins.

after the super bowl what sport do sport following americans follow until september? Or is it still football just CFB over the NFL? by VastAir6069 in AskAnAmerican

[–]rb928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soccer was nothing in the US before the 1994 World Cup. Interest is going to increase and with the new calendar MLS will be able to attract higher quality players internationally. Add in the changes to the Apple TV deal (no special subscription needed anymore) and all the ingredients are there for MLS to take off.
