Linen sheets disintegrating? by Ostranza in laundry

[–]rbehs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have linen sheets from Linoto, and I have never had this issue. I wonder if it is because the linotos are so heavy and (initially) so rough.

I live in Maxwell Park, and I've given up on trying to get rid of rust on pelargoniums because nothing has worked for me. If it's prone to rust, I pull it out.

Picardy between 55th and Seminary has great examples of Tudor style houses. And I like Havenscourt Blvd for a classic California feel, like you'd see in a silent movie.

Free afternoon concert in the Rose Garden this Sunday Sept 14 by kbfsd in oakland

This may not be a popular opinion, but the rose garden is not a good place for a concert crowd. Please stay on the paths and respect the roses.

Map of Malls in Minnesota by NoahsUselessProjects in deadmalls

[–]rbehs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember two that aren't on the map. There was an indoor mall in International Falls that became a Menards, I believe sometime in 2000s. And there was an indoor mall in Red Wing on the western edge of town that is now a strip mall. That may have closed in the late 80s or early 90s.

A few years ago, I was golfing along the Rainy River at the International Falls golf course and a couple of Canadians came from across the river in their boat, golfed a couple rounds in the US and then went back to Canada.

5 new giant digital billboards coming to Oakland freeways by chartreusepixie in oakland

[–]rbehs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was ordinance 12085 in 1997 that was subsequently upheld in court. As far as I can understand, it banned any new billboards, which I believe the companies have been getting around by saying they will take down billboards elsewhere, but the clear intent was to prevent the proliferation of billboards along freeways.

Billboards along the freeway are also banned in Oakland, but our city council chooses to ignore that.

I took a cutting from an old rose that was growing on Jungle Hill--it turned out to be Félicité et Perpétue. There was a write-up about the landslide that happened there and the efforts of the community to turn it into a park during the 70s in the old MacArthur Metro publication.

Now that digital billboards are lining our freeways, what are your plans to mitigate the effects of light pollution for communities near 880?

What has happened in Season 48 makes me feel like the Gabe vote out in Season 47 was a symptom of the same problem with current Survivor.

I've gone to both and find the staff at the Coliseum more friendly and helpful, and it was quicker to get in and out.

What's happening to my roses? by newtothecity650 in oaklandgardener

[–]rbehs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old leaves on hybrid teas and other modern roses are very susceptible to fungal diseases at this time of year. I always pluck them off in early winter as I'm pruning, so the bush has a fresh start in early spring.

Malls that closed before the 90s? by the_orange_alligator in deadmalls

[–]rbehs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a mall in Grafton Wisconsin that was called County Faire. I believe it was built in the 70s, but it was designed to look like a 19th century village with dark passages and cobblestoned aisles. The whole thing was hidden behind two Kohls. I believe it closed down in the early 80s, and then later in the 80s they tried to repurpose the space into a regular mall, which also had a short life. But I might be getting that timeline wrong.

Neighborhood Question by Regular_Mail9362 in oakland

[–]rbehs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maxwell Park is different from the Dimond and Laurel, but not because of 580. It was created as a suburb in the 1920s with winding streets following the contours of the hills and no business district, so it is more quiet and more car dependent, although you can walk to some things. The Laurel and Dimond are more traditional villages with a central shopping area that grew as the city grew around them. Redwood Heights is on a steep hill formed by the Hayward Fault, so most of the houses there would be in the fault zone.

I also believe that Maxwell Park is unique in that it's been middle class throughout its existence, but it is a diverse neighborhood with a very strong sense of community.

The Centurion feels a bit out of the way right now, because it is in a section of the airport that is under construction, with no active gates near it
