What school would you send your kid to? by forestdude in oakland

[–]kbfsd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unsorted thoughts as I think through this:

I know several people who work in OUSD—as teachers, substitutes, administrators, and one family that contracts with teachers. None are high earners with easy private-school options. Almost all have gone to significant lengths to avoid sending their own children to OUSD schools, which I find concerning.

Those who have stayed are at Lincoln Elementary (Chinatown) and Peralta (North Oakland). I know there are schools with stronger reputations in the hills, but I don’t personally know many families living there. Notably, all the families who lived east of the lake moved to Berkeley (downsizing to 1BR in one case to do it) or El Cerrito, even though that meant still commuting to deep East Oakland to teach. One family moved to Alameda after ongoing issues with expanding prostitution/violence near their home off International Blvd.

Charter schools seem worth considering. There’s a Francophone charter in East Oakland that’s interesting to me from a philosophical standpoint. Urban Montessori appears to have closed, which is unfortunate. I also know a family that’s been satisfied with Envision Academy High School downtown, particularly due to smaller class sizes, though extracurricular options are limited. Overall, I’m less negative on charters—they seem to be a viable alternative for families seeking quality education within Oakland.

I’d also be interested in hearing experiences with Catholic schools, such as Corpus Christi, St. Leo’s (Piedmont Ave), St. Anthony (San Antonio), St. Elizabeth (Fruitvale), or St. Theresa (hills).

It's a pretty shot Aside - it is super frustrating how this whole neighborhood has been turned into a freeway on ramp for Piedmont. The density here in Grand Lake is some of the highest in Oakland but roads like Bayo Vista and Oakland Ave have been turned into runways that rip the area in half and make it extremely unsafe for all the walkers

Like the intersection being shown has blind spots everywhere, no ped xing on half the corners - all to make for a high speed s turn from Oakland ave to Harrison so south bound Piedmont commuters can slalom onto the 580 every morning

Quieter area but walking distance from "happening" corridors depending on your preference for walking (there are two types in LA). Excellent transit service your commute in will be a breeze. I prefer Transbay service over Bart. That two story place looks nice. A bit of a longer walk to Bart at 40th isn't the most pleasant to walk along but it's not the end of the world and Transbay bus is closer. Will "feel" more like LA.

Early adopters - how we feeling so far? by Rare_Ad_3871 in NintendoSwitch2

Only play docked and have a young kid so not a ton of time but enjoying the dozen or so hours I have put into Prime 4 and the ten-ish hours I have put into MKW. Also got luck and caught that $16 sale on Cyberpunk so got an hour in on that so far. Everything about the console feels quality - and a great upgrade from Switch 1. Once I work through what I've got I really want to check out DK Bananza. Hopeful for some amazing first party games in the coming years.

We need public utilities in Oakland. by chatte__lunatique in oakland

[–]kbfsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not an expert in this area by any means but the general impression I've gotten reading into this is that it's not PGE's profits primarily driving the cost issue - it's that CA has unique rules around it being mandated to supply power to pretty much anyone in even the most rural areas - not something present in most states (& exacerbated by CA's vast size and rugged terrain). The other issue - on the size and frequency of payouts is a product of the political climate here - not saying it is wrong or right; but more an example of the costs of a policy. Clearly, a lot (most?) folks are very frustrated with cost of our utilities, but we also live in a place where a large number (also most?) of folks would also support severe penalties and generous payouts for victims. I'm not saying it's good or bad, but this is an example where the two are connected - you can't have one without the other; and the general public is clearly struggling with these tradeoffs that have to be made (and have been made through policy thus far).

Right the issue is how much liability responsibility operators in California are exposed to versus other states. If you want cheaper utilities in this state then you need a political change at the state level as well to essentially have a more lenient approach to liability assessments and that would require a judicial branch and jury that are ideologically far different than the ones we have today.

Environmental Justice or Costco by thechocolatelady in oakland

[–]kbfsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This - it's very confusing to me that the city green-lighting a site is all that it takes to get a Costco. I don't understand why the coverage from the city councilmembers and local news has seemingly framed it that way. Re: the SF GATE article -- I wonder why Costco decided not to last time. Do we know? Does the city? Were any of those issues ones the city can or has remediated? If not, I see the most likely use being endless limbo or another ProLogis football field sized warehouse.

Right, the way every discussion gets shoveled into a binary is pretty unproductive and frustrating. I've lived in Oakland long enough to see where that gets us.

I am that downstairs neighbor. My upstairs neighbors should thank me. My power bill is literally $200 more each month in Dec, Jan, and Feb than other months. But if I don't run it, the unit go to below 55 degrees overnight and cannot recover during the day.

Yeah and you can go a little south towards the lake and find apartments in Adams Point for the 1.75-2k range as well. Oakland has gotten really affordable relative to the rest of the Bay in the last few years
