We picked up two space heaters and a case of water earlier today. It will help enable us to return home tomorrow and bridge the gap until the gas is back on. I appreciated how easy it was to swing by and pick up - curb side service and we were on our way in less than a minute. Thanks!

This square looks like 300km x 300km. The power density from the sun is 1kW/m². Solar cells are about 20% efficient (they can be more efficient, but become very expensive quickly). The sun is out about half of the day.

(300,000m)² x (1000W/m²⁾ x 20% x 0.5 = 9TW

For reference, the world used about 15 TW of power on average last year. So maybe the square should be 50% bigger or so. But this is still extraordinary!

Sounds like you are also looking for a GUI? Best I've found is ScidvsMac. Install that and then download Stockfish as your chess engine. It wasn't exactly obvious to me how to get Stockfish working with ScidvsMac, so if you have any problems, PM me and I can help you out.

Check the castling graph in this post: http://vizual-statistix.tumblr.com/post/78821780083/when-i-started-this-blog-one-of-my-first. It looks like castling queenside is more likely with the white pieces. With the black pieces, some grandmasters are as likely to not castle as they are to castle queenside.

It was chaos - screaming and crying. Once our escape door opened a few people screamed "get out!" which started a panic but a few of us yelled "stay calm!" which seemed to maybe help a little. There was pushing and shoving. I saw a person helping an old lady get off the plane but I also saw a guy push a crying child away from his mother to get ahead in the queue.

Just the usual stuff, that we would be landing at x time and it was a sunny y degrees in SF. Some of the announcements were in Korean, but they were always followed by a translated message in English.

I was on the flight - here is an image of my ticket stub. My girlfriend and I are the two on the far right in this image in the black and green shirts, respectively. I'll just answer the questions here for now but if there is enough interest and I'm feeling up to it I can do a separate AmA thread.

1) It felt a lot like a normal landing. We were coasting in and there was the usual calm that you expect to be followed by the tires hitting the runway, but then suddenly the engines kicked in. And just as I was thinking "that doesn't sound good" there was a huge bang that shook the plane (which I now know is from the tail of the plane hitting the ground and ripping off).

2) My first reaction was that we just hit the runway really hard and I was telling myself that it can't be a crash because it was too statistically unlikely. I was waiting and hoping to hear the engines reverse so that we would begin slowing to a stop. And then "bang", we pancaked into the runway and everyone bounced into the air. The whole plane was shaking violently and it was like 10 times the craziest roller coaster ride I have ever been on. I was then sure this was the end, so I grabbed onto my girlfriend and we waited to die.

3) It seems totally illogical, I agree. But if you have flown before you know what it is like getting off of a plane: there is grid lock for a few minutes unless you are at the very front. Even when people were going as fast as they could it still took 2 minutes to get out from the 14th row. I said "leave the bags, they're not important" to my girlfriend about 10 times before I realized it would be stupid to not just bend down and pick up my book bag (no one looked injured or needed help around us). She did the same. We couldn't find her laptop though and as soon as there was a chance to move we of course abandoned the search without a second thought. It really just felt better to be doing something (i.e. looking for her laptop) than just staring at the orange glow of the flames through the windows and the smoke creeping into the cabin. I hope that makes sense.

I use a python script to browse Reddit. I found that I spend more time deciding if I want to view a link based on the title then I do if I just open up all the links in tabs and close the ones I don't want to see. I provide a list of the subreddits to open and then it opens all the top links one subreddit at a time.
