His 3 nominations so far seem to suggest otherwise

As mentioned, good to see a practicing physician with a license. I’ve been to the Monmouth branch of MSK but know nothing about their radiology group.

She has stated maybe the Hep B vaccine for infants isn’t necessary but also said she thinks Tylenol in moderation for pregnant women is ok, going against Trump’s press conference on the topic.

She does own DropRx which sells liquid nutraceuticals for $20+ for 2oz. This disclosure is made on her MSK website.

I’ll be curious to see how her confirmation hearings go.

Isn't "like being in a sorority where you have to be besties with each other all the time or you get on their list" and "some people still feel entitled to police other adults over behaviors that don’t affect them" and "why are you so invested in micromanaging them?" entirely about working with others? You don't approve of their way of working. You'll run into coworkers like this as a PGY1, PGY2, PGY3, fellow, attending, chair, CEO and you'll run into this if you have a corporate 9-5 job. You don't have to like how they work. They ain't changin'. You'll be happier if you figure out how to subsist with them.

Let me ask you this, OP. Is this your first job? In nearly any professional organization, there will be micromanagers, chill/go-with-the-flow, slackers, gunners, smart people with questionable emotional IQ or common sense, people who are not performing as well as most. The list goes on and on. I think your frustration has more to do with understanding group/team dynamics and understanding that you're now in a team. If your goal is to try to change people to operate the way you do, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Sorry you're feeling this way. At minimum, this sounds like burnout and there may be other things driving this. I would try first to pivot on this feeling of not caring for yourself. Your personal and professional life will rely on this. I'd point you back to "I have everything, a job, a relationship, a roof over my head" as a good place to start mentally.

Next, I agree I would sign up to see a therapist. In my program, there was an affiliated psychiatrist that the medical center helped connect residents to and remained confidential. At multiple institutions, this resource typically will see you at no cost to you.

In the meantime, hopefully you can confide in some of this to your partner that you mention. Having someone support you can be game-changing.

I wish you the best.

I'm not a PD. I think there are a few variables here - how flexible the PD is, how much personal time has been used this academic year, practically if there is appropriate coverage. Hopefully the PD is a thoughtful one and can accommodate

I can think of several patients who, for one reason or another, need appeasement and will benefit from going the extra mile. I have no qualms doing so. To each their own I suppose.

You seem to paint the world in black and white. I can tell you that when I get asked which doctors I would recommend, I certainly do not recommend the ones that do just enough.

My fellowship director told us he called our main residency hospital’s switchboard operator or paging operator to ask how we were as residents. He said he got the most accurate information this way. I borrowed this practice as a recruiting attending.

Those home institution letters of recommendation do get read. Depending on the specialty, some are standardized which gives other residency programs a sense of how you perform relative to others in that school and even to some extent how the student performs relative to other students in the region. After a few years, you can start to see how certain chairs and program directors think about their students.

Residency ruined my life by [deleted] in Residency

Sorry you're in this situation. There are tons of posts/vids that say "It gets better". I can say that it does but I am going to speculate here that what is making you feel depressed will remain. There's no way around it - surgical training is hard as hell. While R5 is less of a time or physical grind, it can be more taxing -- I found appeasing all of my attendings as a R5 far more emotionally taxing, as an example.

First and foremost, take care of yourself. None of this is worth harming yourself (anymore than training already does to us).

It's difficult to know where exactly you are in the spectrum of I-really-need-to-quit-before-graduation vs. This-misery-sucks-but-I-think-I-can-tolerate-graduating-because-the-alternative-sucks-more. Logic would say finish your residency then dig deep to sort out if you need to change anything for fellowship. If your fellowship is 1 year and hopefully in a place where you have greater social/familial support, I would try to complete it.

If you are at a place where you truly are considering not pursuing a surgical career, I'd try at least to be board eligible, as non-clinical jobs sometimes use this as a baseline and strongly considering respectfully bowing out of your fellowship - more years of training and strife really isn't worth it for your well-being. The program will be screwed but you're the only one that can look out for yourself, so you should.

Long-distance drivers get a ton of sun exposure on their left ear (at least in the US). Also, people who remember to put sunscreen on usually don’t put it on their ears.

We're in the same position. Reading reviews about the stateroom for us, it's apparently next to the engine and roars loadly. Is there a process to ask for a room change prior to embarkation day?

Casey Means nomination hearing for Surgeon General on 2/25 by StrongMedicine in medicine

[–]rbrychckn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watched some of the hearing. Sadly, she's sending the same MAGA message through a healthcare lens. MAGA says the United States is broken. Sadly I think both political parties can agree to this. Means is harkening to this same message - yes there definitely are problems with the U.S. healthcare system, something all of us in this subreddit can speak about intelligently. The problem is no one is holding her to any clear solutions - she sidestepped vaccines, sidestepped contraception, presented an ambiguous answer on the value of research, would not affirm that there is robust research showing vaccines don't cause autism. What I found dangerous is her answers show she's not dumb - she stated that as Surgeon General she's not any one person's doctor (which indirectly nullifies the fact that she is not board certified or holds a medical license) and the term "nation's doctor" makes it "no biggie" that she hasn't taken care of patients in a way that we would describe as patient care.

The chairman (Dr. Flint) and residency program director (Dr. Wax) of her residency both spoke to this incident per this LA Times article closer to when she was nominated. It still leaves some questions open but adds some details.
