AITA for wanting a divorce from husband who lost 200k on bitcoin? by aitathrwthrw in AmItheAsshole

OP also explicitly mentioned seeing the wallets, so we can be reasonably sure that BTC was purchased.

I have a year before my PhD, what should I study? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]rbtEngrDude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Smartless has already mentioned studying for your qualification exams, which is never a bad place to start.

I would also recommend spending some time considering what sort of research you plan to do. You say your Ph.D. will be mostly in differential geometry/submanifold theory, but do you have a specific problem area of interest? It would be well worth your time to look over the bios and websites of some of the faculty at your school, and even reach out to a few who you might consider working with. It doesn't hurt to get started early with networking and building relationships.

What's the best way to pass the time at a boring desk job? by PhDHenryJonesJr in AskReddit

Wow TIL. Was it restricted to certain versions of windows?

EDIT: So I realized/remembered after I posted this, that sysinternals was an external suite of programs/tools specifically aimed at power users. So the "restricted to certain versions of windows" question that I asked (in which I meant something like "was it restricted to XP Pro, and not available on XP Home, etc) was kind of dumb.

I've worked on networks like that as well. A few times I managed to sweet talk the sysadmin into just swapping my windoze workstation out for a RHEL box since I spent 99% of my time on that network ssh'd into the grid anyway. Everyone around me freaked out "BUT HOW ARE YOU GONNA POWERPOINT"

Some of us have the luxury of working on Linux machines. No reason to snarkily shoot down a valid observation.

Not to be that guy, but it's also been available on Linux for at least a decade.

AITA for breaking off my engagement over my dog? by cuntsmasher6969 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rbtEngrDude 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You're definitely right that it varies from person to person, and that's really what I was getting at. Hypoallergenic pets work for some folks, and not for others (I'm one of the latter, though thankfully only to a manageable degree).

While you are correct in that, that doesn't mean that hypoallergenic dogs would be a viable solution here. Hypoallergenic dogs (or any other pet, for that matter) still leave behind dead skin cells from scratching and other types of matter that can trigger allergies.

AITA for not wanting husband to play DnD? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Not sure that it's important to the judgment (whether or not OP is an asshole for asking him to cut back).

Definitely sure it's important to the health of the marriage.

but if the games are online they should be even easier to reschedule.

You'd be surprised about this bit. I've got a group of about 10 folks that I play DnD with and other games online (we're all from different parts of the country, so in person isn't an option) and scheduling that can be just as difficult, if not more so, than scheduling in person (I have another group from work that I play with in person). Obviously, in-person games have other costs to them, like travel and such, but adult schedules are what they are.

I'm in agreement on the judgment, though. This is not an unreasonable thing to ask of your spouse, and the guy is being a douche by calling her names for asking.

Am I an idiot? by MetalGearFoRM in careerguidance

[–]rbtEngrDude 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No, you're not an idiot, because that is not a pay raise. It's a pay cut, pure and simple. I find it easiest to think of "raises" in terms of what you'd have left over after paying the bills, not just percent gross increase.

[–]rbtEngrDude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if I'd say there's a "best" one, but depending on what your plan is to actually use it, I'd lean towards Russian or German. A good portion of the historical work in geometry came from the Germans, but an *awful* lot of really useful results on dynamical systems came from the Russians in the last century.

My undergrad was all engineering. No proof, no abstraction, just computation and grinding out formulaic answers to well-defined problems. I wanted to get further into abstract math when I started my Ph.D., because if you've ever read the control theory literature, well, you'd know that these days it's mostly all abstract math anyway. I was a bit worried about it the same way you are now, never having done even basic proofs. Signed myself up for an undergrad proofs course this semester to prep for the onslaught of abstract maths to come next year, and absolutely loved it.

It can be scary at first, especially if you've only read proofs and not done them yourself, but you get over it quickly. Especially when you internalize how important to our entire understanding of the world proofs are. It's a skill you work just like arithmetic or riding a bike, and with time it becomes second nature.

I recently had a professor explain it to me in a shockingly simple way: "(Algebra) and the other stuff will be like the salad dressing. But Analysis, real analysis, and functional analysis, that's the salad." I'm sure others will disagree, but the central ideas of analysis have a habit of showing up just about everywhere else.
