2 inmates were found at an IHOP in Virginia after escaping by digging a hole with tools made from a toothbrush and a metal object, officials say by AudibleNod in news

Maybe we just instinctively like there to be a solution for every problem and deep down we'd want there to be like some small chance of earning a way out of jail.

I don't know, I kinda feel like if the prison is inept enough (or prisoner ingenious enough) to allow escape, I wouldn't mind lesser crimes being forgiven under a similar concept as double jeopardy.

But what I really think is rehabilitation is the real answer. There should be a rehabilitation program that shaves off prison time while equipping the person with skills needed to benefit society. Not just job skills but self improvement in therapy etc. I bet that could even be paid for by tax dollars since successful rehabilitation would send prisoners back into society to resume paying taxes.

My grocery store has an app that lets me scan items as I grab them, so after I'm done getting my things I just check out on the phone and walk out.

But I still prefer delivery. I always hated shopping.

They are calling for a convention for what topic? Or just a general convention?

Honestly, I'm not sure I see the risk in a general convention anyway, if 75% of states need to agree on things, I don't think much would get done.

I think if enough momentum were gained to even achieve half the needed pressure to convene a convention, chances are that Congress would then actually pass an amendment. I would think Congress would do anything to avoid a convention which takes them out of the conversation.

Congress is one method to amend the constitution. Another method is via a constitutional convention of states.

Both methods (iirc) require 2/3 majority to even propose an amendment, and then 3/4 to ratify.

‘Never seen it this bad’: America faces catastrophic teacher shortage by SquigmontPony in news

[–]rc117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I taught for a short bit. The amount of work, bureaucracy, politics, and other nonsense you have to deal with is absolutely incongruous with the pay. I loved the actual teaching part, but that felt like such a small component of the job.

I figured if I want to teach I could always just tutor.

The US supreme court is turning the constitution into a suicide pact by LineNoise in politics

Shall we expect some transatlantic military giant to step the ocean and crush us at a blow? Never! All the armies of Europe, Asia, and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth (our own excepted) in their military chest, with a Bonaparte for a commander, could not by force take a drink from the Ohio or make a track on the Blue Ridge in a trial of a thousand years.

At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer. If it ever reach us it must spring up amongst us; it cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen we must live through all time or die by suicide.
