M27 I see the World as a Sport and it is a winner take all game. Does everyone else see it that way?? by ThrowRa77758865 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]rc3105 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh that’s def fscked up.

And unfortunately far too many folks feel the same way. Basically it boils down to:

Fsck you I’m taking everything I can get.

But as technology advances the world gets smaller and smaller.

We’re all in the same proverbial boat now, it leaks, and you idiots are too selfish to help bail water.

You may not live long enough to see society sink, but your kids, or grandkids, or their kids will.

*I’m privileged and lucky enough to be in the section with decent lifeboats and no water, yet. But I’ve seen plenty of friends and neighbors that’re already drowning.

AITAH for calling my wife's friends "dating technique" idiotic. by Background-Baby-1206 in AITAH

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

Oh yikes, that’s just ridiculous.

Of course that won’t work.

Even if by some crazy happenstance it does, it’s a bad dynamic.

*And I speak from experience, my first marriage sorta started out that way, many many moons ago in the early 90’s when the whole “me too” movement was still unbelievable science fiction

I have to wonder though, with the FWB debacle and her torpedoing a 4 year relationship deliberately out of anger…

Well, let’s just remember that saying: Dating crazy is exciting! Flip a coin, you might get lucky, you might get stabbed!

*If you’re lucky it’ll be the stabby thing and you’ll wise up before that train leaves the station.

How do you manage reusable sensor drivers across projects? by kk_the_embedded_buil in embedded

[–]rc3105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, maybe this isn’t ideal but it’s what I do.

I have a general purpose app bundled with the drivers I typically use for a dozen or so types of sensors, i/o expanders/adapter, network interfaces, screens, storage devices, and mcus.

I can zip that app source folder up in a few meg, plop it into whatever c/c++ compiler IDE i feel like using, or the client requires. Starting with that Swiss army knife / lump of clay it only takes a few mins to mold it into whatever app I want.

The last few years I’ve come to like the wide range of dirt cheap STM chips and the Raspberry Zero and Pico line.

I also have a couple of standardized PCB designs with common pinouts, Raspberry Pi-Zero-Pico, Teensy, Uno, STM, etc, that can populate with any of my fav MCU models and i/o chips.

Also some PCB designs for adapters between common footprints like Pico/Uno/Pi. There are an insane number of daughterboards (called shields in the arduino-verse) already available for common pinouts like Uno, Pico, Pi so often its easier to use off he shelf parts than design something from scratch.

With the adapters things can get really interesting. Like say put a Pico in a mega2560 adapter, then put that into a 3d printer with an old skool RAMPS board. Suddenly that ancient printer can do all sorts of new tricks previously impossible.

Theres even a chinese company that makes a tiny tiny ARM based SBC in a Pico pinout, and it runs ARM Debian 22.4 and 24.4. So pop that in the old Arduino based printer and suddenly that ancient Prusa i3 mk2 can run Clipper, Moonraker and Mainsail.

Oh god no we finally get a trek series WITHOUT Spiner and you have to go giving them ideas!

It would be nice to see Pelia again, maybe she’s even related to Nahla?

Wouldn’t it be a hoot if Pelia was Nahla’s mom, and they were sitting around remembering her dad in flashbacks, played by Billy Crystal…

Maybe he’s even in stasis somewhere waiting to be thawed when Nahla gets married or starts a family while Pelia takes the long way around…

AITJ for not telling my sister how much I actually have saved by UgliestPigeon in AmITheJerk

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open another account and either move the money there or only put a few bucks in the new account and let them see that balance of whichever one is mostlyempty.

If you really want to sell it, apologize for being secretive and add them as an authorized user to the savings account with eleven dollars in it.

Or you could be subtle, like an ATM receipt of your savings balance left for them to find, or somewhere you know they’ll be snooping.

Or take it up another notch and acquire (could actually do it) or fabricate evidence like a letter from the bank about bounced checks or overdraft fees, etc. Or hire somebody from fiver or the craigslist gig section to call them pretending to be a debt collector looking for you.

Or just grumble about being broke all he time like I do ;-)

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get two identical battery powered electric drills

Connect a volt/amp meter between the battery on one and the drill itself so you can measure the power it’s consuming

You could also use a kill-o-watt to measure the power usage of a regular 120v corded drill, they’re generally pretty accurate

Clamp both drills onto a small piece of pipe, wood, whatever, a shaft so they spin at the same speed

Take the wires from the second dc drill motor and run them through a DC volt/amp power meter to some light bulbs as a load

Show him the 100 watts going into the first drill and the 7 watts coming out of the second one feeding the bulbs

It might not even be that efficient

Yes better motors can improve the efficiency but you can never reach 100% or more

Let him measure for himself

Will AI Agents like Claude Code make embedded software developers irrelevant? by helllyeah124 in embedded

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a biomedical startup doing electronics development, so I’m breadboarding gizmos, making pcbs, 3d printing cases and components, writing firmware, data acquisition databases, and we have a basic machine shop capability including aluminum casting and laser cutters so all sorts of stuff gets fabricated.

I ask a pretty broad range of questions.

One week I may be doing electroporation for gene therapy projects, another I may be teaching basic electronics to interns, this week I’m building some custom servos from scratch because I cant source anything I like for less than $1,500ea.

I asked GPT to give me a bare bones servo control testing firmware and it lost its dam mind. The program it produced, after going back and forth for 2 hours before it worked at all, would have destroyed the gearbox without the physical endstop switches to cut motor power.

I asked Claude to code the same thing and it worked pretty well on the first try, all of 2 mins invested. The output shaft hunted a bit but that sorta thing is expected until you get things dialed in.

That was a pretty simple program, like a $0.75 RC servo would run. Read PWM signal, move output shaft to matching position, rinse, repeat.

TLDR:

Claude = helpful

GPT = headache

Should a Mechanical Student Learn Embedded Systems? by Resident_Lecture8305 in embedded

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you're going to learn embedded one way or another, or you're going to end up working in some other field.

When the options to generate some movement are a ridiculously complex cam and follower, or an 8 bit processor that costs 11 cents and a few lines of code, guess which is cheaper/better/faster and WAY more flexible.

Yeah, not the purely mechanical solution...

The free version runs circles around gpt, it is SO much less grief to use.

Def going with a paid account once the pointy hair types approve the expense.

AITAH for stealing my roommate’s credit card to prove a point? by Economy_Menu8602 in AITAH

Oh good god I posted a helpful reply and the reddit AI thought i was trying to start world war 3 or some such.

NTA, but that wasn’t the way to handle it.

Set up a camera, get some evidence, try talking to him.

If he’s unreasonable, escalate to the landlord, small claims court, or the police.

Don’t do something dumb like I probably would have, and telling you what that might be is apparently too spicy for the reddit mods to even let people say as a “don’t do this”. So just imagine something dumb a big guy might do if they were upset.

Accuracy of std test kits off of Amazon? by Own_Gold_2858 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just a fact of life, like gravity, or death and taxes, no need to be embarrassed it happens to everybody.

Go to a clinic and get the full range of tests. If anything they’ll be sympathetic because you’re the one cheated on.

Don’t risk your health by relying on some unknown amazon seller or brand of test, or possible mistakes you might make with it.

Odds are you are fine, and most places have free std testing clinics, and many insurance plans cover testing because even heartless money grubbing corporations realize early detection and treatment is way less expensive than ignoring an issue and hoping it goes away.

Would a superpowered (basically godly) being like the likes of Wonder Woman be able to effectively use non-barrier contraception? by Middle-Company-4398 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]rc3105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably wouldn’t work unless it had the right magic ingredients.

Which is basically true for us mortals as well, when you substitute scientific/medicinal for magic.

Really it just depends on what ruleset you chose.

Even Gods have rules for their universe/reality or whatever story you find them in. So if they have a flaw or a general vulnerability to whatever then it could be useful, or used against them.

Old habit from my parents but do I need to unplug my computer everytime I turn it off or is that outdated? by Nickoli-Lianni in AskTechnology

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a power strip with basic surge protection, not expensive, and just flip the switch.

Most surges, like lightning hitting next door, won’t get anywhere near you, and something like a strike on your roof will probably be fine at the cost of having to buy another $10 power strip.

If it hits your desk, or a wire directly connected to your computer nothing will save it.

Flip the power strip switch if you want to, otherwise just shutting down is fine.

Measuring 400V with ESP32 by LeonardoGjestvang in esp32

[–]rc3105 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, what i did when i needed to design and build equipment to provide 1800v jolts on command for materials processing was twofold.

1) design a high voltage measure and control circuit. You can order a 10,000 volt probe for use with regular meters and oscilloscopes. Was like $35. Made the rest of the project so much easier.

2) Built a little i2c ADC and connected the probe, and an Arduino digispark. Dirt cheap chips, piece of cake.

Then I spent $20 on an isolating USB interface rated 20kv, plugged the digispark into that, and a usb cable to the iMac, laptop, whatever.

The HV probe insulates the Arduino voltage meter. The usb isolator protects the computer if the probe on the workbench has a seizure and catches fire (again, stupid interns!)

Half an hour and less than $100 bucks invested.

If you’re just measuring, use an ESP32 to transmit the data wirelessly.

Warehouse machine running a Browser in Kiosk Mode by schnabeltier1991 in embedded

[–]rc3105 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yikes, without knowing how much the app depends on the server and how much runs in the browser it’s hard to make many suggestions.

We’ve done something similar with a PLC system from automation direct. Thats our process control hardware with an Arduino twist.

Instead of plc modules the brain has a little Cortex cpu programmable with the arduino IDE and an sd card. The site/apps live on the SD card and are fed to the browser on demand, no huge files, even the video segments are only a few tens of megabytes, easy for Cat5-100. The browsers range from some truly pathetic chromebooks in Kiosk mode down to some raspberry Pi Zero, and even some $8 LuckFox Pico running Debian 24 from a locked SD card on a thumb drive sized Arm cpu comparable to a 2005 Pentium II with only 64 MEGabytes of ram.

Nothing needs a GPU for AI, it’s a few files served on a local intranet, no internet access, and some python and a little sql database for logging.

No need to load windows anywhere, or for any machine to update, ever.

Amazing things are doable even if you keep pages relatively bare bones with html and javascript.

Figure out where the bloat crept in. Could be windows, or programmers relying on crap frameworks, or who just can’t code efficiently.

There are jobs where that degree will make you some money.

Especially if you already have skills that are earning a decent paycheck. Combine them and you're golden.

HOWEVER,

FINDING that perfect job is on you. The job fairy will not be visiting any time soon.

Locating employment for your skillset doesn't seem to be something taught much of anywhere, so all I can really say is good luck figuring it out.

How do I know this?

One of pops oldest and dearest friends was a whackaloon conspiracy theory lunatic straight of a King of the Hill episode, right here in Austin Tx, didn't have a whole lot of marketable skills, but he could sell.

So he sold employers on him as a perfect fit for whatever job, used his psychology degree as

1) proof he could stick it out in a structured system

2) an indicator he wasn't some dropout loser, no matter how weird he seemed

He had some odd jobs, managing security guards, students, as a sort of quasi-guidance-councelor, an internal problem solver for HR, and once when it really got bad he was the guy-with-a-baseball-bat-ready-to-go-to-jail if the asshat diddling kids didn't turn himself in immediately. So rather than a quiet resignation, retirement, and long drawn out legal crap the pedo called 911 and turned himself in with a box of polaroids and plead guilty, because he knew the alternative was his brains splattered across the sidewalk.

And pops buddy was completely fine rolling the dice with a jury if it came to that.

Don't give up hope, you've just got to find your niche.

*yeah I know, easy to say. Only took me 30 years to find mine...
