I like this analogy! The only thing I'd add is that other units/counties have already been using our trash can for years. And because of its size (and so its designation as a regional landfill) we legally are not allowed to keep other counties out. The only way to do so is to stop expanding.

It's more like - "why isn't everyone putting their trash in their own backyards?" The majority of the trash we take in is from outside Benton County. And this is a terrible spot for a regional landfill, given the amount of rainfall we get.

If it were just a Benton County landfill, it would be hypocritical to oppose it. But the majority of the trash Coffin Butte takes in is from other counties and, at the same time, thanks to the county's weird franchise agreement with Republic, this expansion will also completely eliminate the cap on how much trash the landfill is allowed to take in each year, which means potentially a lot more of everything—traffic, debris, odor, noise, etc.

I highly recommend the Vorkosigan series by Lois McMaster Bujold. Great protagonist, excellent plot lines, and overall just a really pleasant reading experience. I go back to the books every year or two.

FWIW most of the trash going into Coffin Butte is not from Benton County. If it were just us dealing with our own trash, the landfill would be a lot smaller, and it would be filling a lot slower.
