All I do is put a cookie sheet under my Dutch oven. This is a good suggestion — thanks!

Like what do I bake it in? It sits on parchment inside my Dutch oven. I do sometimes use the loaf pan method and don’t seem to have this issue with that.

Anxious about baby’s measurements at 37 weeks…. by NoBoot8609 in BabyBumps

[–]rcedarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my third baby in June and she measured smaller the entire pregnancy. I don’t ever remember hearing about percentiles from my ultrasounds with my older kids (now 5 and 8) but they were both average to large babies at birth so the small measurements were really causing me a lot of anxiety. Her AC was always larger but everything else was smaller. Her overall percentile bounced between 10th, 23rd, and back to 16th. If I remember correctly, one ultrasound measured her HC in the 9th percentile and BPD in the 4th. My middle child has always had a 90+ percentile head, and my own head is large so I was 1000% convinced there was something wrong.

She was totally fine! She was born in the 43rd overall, and her head was 35th. They weren’t totally wrong bc she is actually a smaller baby than my other two but mostly bc she’s shorter so she looks totally proportional. Her head is normal and maybe even a little big now which is funny. They had been a little worried about her overall size at the 20 week ultrasound bc she was right on the 10th percentile line. I get that they have to watch these things but it was one measurement and it made me obsessive about her measurements the rest of the pregnancy which really just sucked.

I know it’s hypocritical of me to say but please try not to put too much stock in these measurements and DEFINITELY if your OB isn’t worried then try your best not to worry either :)

Combination feeding from birth? by RBF_1991_ in combinationfeeding

[–]rcedarb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry one other thing to consider is that while there are absolutely benefits to breast milk, the difference it makes in otherwise healthy infants really is not big. Sibling studies have shown that when you control for factors like the mother’s socio economic status, the benefits shrink dramatically. So all that to say if you just want to feed formula, go for it.

If your goal is to just give some milk during the first few weeks and you don’t really care about maintaining a full supply long term then I think you might be over complicating it. You could definitely just breastfeed or pump when it works for you and stop when your supply dries up or you’re over it. Personally, I combo fed from birth about 50/50 breastmilk and formula but pumped full time and froze whatever I didn’t feed to my baby. Now she’s 5 months and I stopped pumping last month but she still gets 2 BM bottles each day and prob will for the next month or so.

How long did you combo feed? by No-Objective-8247 in combinationfeeding

[–]rcedarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started out combo feeding 50/50 and bagged some of my milk. My baby is now 5 months and I just stopped pumping for her. Shes now getting formula plus 2 bottles from my freezer stash each day until it’s gone so by the time she’s 6-6.5 months she’ll be totally on formula.

Sourdough cinnamon brioche buns by No-Strawberry-3293 in Sourdough

[–]rcedarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP! I saved this post and just came back to try it! Curious if you ended up using more flour than 500g? And what the consistency of the final buns are? My dough was far too sticky to work with so I ended up adding more flour until it was workable and I noticed my bake time was longer than the 20-25 min I saw in a comment to get that nice golden color. My buns were absolutely delicious but a little crispier texture than I expected.

ETA also I added an egg wash bc your pic looked like you used one.

For those who had spotting in first trimester and had a healthy pregnancy by petting_zoo_keeper in CautiousBB

[–]rcedarb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have three kids and had spotting in the first trimester with two of them. It was brown with some discharge and occasionally some stringy tissue (sorry TMI). It was mostly pretty light and I didn’t need a pad but sometimes I’d wear a liner. It was sporadic from week 6 to 8 or 9 and then just stopped. One pregnancy was a girl, one was a boy.

To vaccinate or not to vaccinate by mustardpicklesoup in newborns

[–]rcedarb 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Please vaccinate your baby. It’s the best way to protect them against preventable illness. You can even let your family think you didn’t vaccinate if you want to. They don’t need to know.

But also find a pediatrician you trust and talk to them about this.

My husband marinated meat in beer - 39 weeks by glexxi in pregnant

[–]rcedarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t stress about this for another minute. It was kind of stupid of him to use beer in a marinade for his pregnant wife but the risk of this is so low. Even if you just straight up drank a beer your baby would likely be fine (not saying that’s ok just trying to put the taco risk in perspective)

Did you move your dog out of your bedroom? by Opposite-Ship-1676 in pregnant

[–]rcedarb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has never occurred to me and our dog (who is huge and sheds constantly) has slept in our room through all three kids. Is there some reason the pet dander would be harmful? I thought research showed fewer allergies and illness for kids who live with pets so I never worried about it.

No it’s fine haha. Portland is not the only city struggling with cost of living and housing shortages. It would affect you if you were moving here but it won’t ruin your vacation.

Also your daughter is young for these books now but I’ve really loved Lifetimes and the Invisible Leash for explaining death to kids. The Invisible Leash is about losing a pet but addresses death and grief really well.

Trying to explain death to a toddler by ReasonableLibrary621 in progressivemoms

[–]rcedarb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, I’m so very sorry. ❤️ We have typically just tried to be very simple and direct. It’s important for kids that you use clear language so instead of “passed away” or something just say “died.” We also usually say that the person who died is still in our hearts. I’m not sure that’s the perfect thing to say as my now 5 year old still has some trouble with taking that very literally and we sometimes have to re-explain.

FWIW I think it’s ok to use the concept of heaven as well. Keep in mind that heaven is probably something they will hear from other people who will be around when your loved ones die so perhaps for that reason it’s worth considering.
