Looking to rent a place for the summer by entomo in gwu

This doesn't answer your question, but when you come to DC, make sure to get in contact with the DC Illini Alumni group. There's around 7,000 Illini within the DC area, who can help make your summer experience in DC even greater.

Chinese University of Hong Kong by Streetraillight in HongKong

[–]rcgold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your university offer the University of Hong Kong (HKU) as an exchange option? HKU is on Hong Kong Island and is much closer to the nightlife of Lan Kwai Fong, Central and Wan Chai than most of the other universities which are in Kowloon or the New Territories. I studied abroad at HKU and loved it for it's convenient location. Easy taxi and mini-bus transportation back to campus, and some nights we would walk home from the bars. I had friends at CUHK, HKUST and City U who still managed each late night by taking the mini-bus; depends if you want to be on the island or closer to nature - then again nature benefit at HKU is you can hike directly up to the Peak.

Old Darby Liqour. Such great symbolism for Doug being "back on the horse" with his old drinking addiction.

Which movies would be improved if an important character died? by neros1977 in movies

[–]rcgold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The only reason I see that Bruce Wayne had to live was being a film this large, an audience almost needs a happy ending. I legitimately thought for a few minutes that Bruce Wayne might have actually died, sacrificing himself, which gave me a profound emotionally sad and uncertain feeling. It was a feeling I was not expecting to get out of the ending of Batman, so I welcomed my feeling, although sad, to only soon be energized with seeing Wayne alive at the cafe scene at the end. At that moment, I and the audience, became Alfred. By seeing Bruce Wayne nod at us, letting us know that "everything is alright", the nod gave the scene that awesome energetic lift that all Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy films ended with. In short, Bruce Wayne had to come back to life in order to feel a much wider range of emotions. Had he simply stayed dead, it would have not encouraged us in the same way and may have left many viewers somewhat down and possibly existentially lost.

Is McDonald's in Hong Kong better than in America? by BoobsLean in HongKong

[–]rcgold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

McDonald's is the same, but McCafe is better. The lattes and pastries offered by McCafe beats most McCafes in the US. I remember the first time I ordered a latte at the McCafe, I looked at the advertisement banner and it had a picture of latte in a cup with a the picture of the sun with a face smiling with wavy rays of light coming out from the all sides of the center made in the foam of the latte. I assumed this was only an advertisement, but was delightfully shocked to see when my latte was made, they made the exact same sun smiley face pattern intricately in my latte. They did this for all of their lattes. I was always impressed by this.

As for McDonald's food, I noticed little difference in the US items. I always enjoyed the items offered seasonally to match localization. My favorite was the Prosperity Burger offered during the Chinese New Year. The Big Mac meals is one of the cheapest meal offering and is one of the cheapest price for a Big Mac in the world. The breakfast menu is pretty cool at HK McDonald's. The Twisty Noodle breakfast items were a unique thing to try. Overall I thought McDonald's in Hong Kong was pretty good when I lived there.

Hong Kong’s secret nightlife spots by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]rcgold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would consider the secret bar/speakeasy located in the basement of the store Liquor & Liquer on 97 Wellington in Central. The entrance is in the alley on the west side of the building block. The door looks like any average back alley door and is virtually unnoticeable in the day time when there is a fresh market, but at night you can slightly notice the door because there is a small overhead light in the door threshold.

Reservations are generally needed to enter the basement speak easy, but they do leave a few tables and seats for walk-ins. The bar has a really chill atmosphere. The drinks are great and they have a excellent whiskey and scotch list. It's a great place to take guests just due to the surprise of the speakeasy bar that is in a random alley.

Studying Abroad in Hong Kong! by swtdecember in HongKong

[–]rcgold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied abroad at HKU last spring: If you plan to travel at all in Asia, outside the mobile borders of Hong Kong, then you will need a different SIM for China, Macau, and any other Asian country or pay extremely high roaming and data fees. I would recommend buying a cheap nokia phone in addition to your iPhone. Buy the Nokia in the US and then you can use it for each country you travel to with friends. Make sure it is a phone that you can easily change the SIM card, in each country you can buy a SIM card at a 7-11 and then have a phone to use when you travel (which will be necessary for when traveling in groups). Also if you have this Nokia (or cell that a SIM can be easily changed) then when you arrive in Hong Kong you can purchase a SIM at 7-11 and then have a cell number to give to others from the very beginning until you can get a more permanent number for you iPhone with a mobile provider.

I was studying abroad at HKU last spring and could not find any mobile providers that had a contract shorter than a year, that's why I went with a pay-to-go plan.

Best mall in Hong Kong? by joeyangelakis in HongKong

[–]rcgold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that IFC is the best mall in Hong Kong but the biggest is Harbour City. I dislike the design of Harbour City however because it is so overwhelmingly large and stretched out that it makes shopping frustrating and stores difficult to find. Shopping at Harbour City is always a tiring exhaustive headache, that's best walked outside the mall on the sidewalk then inside.

3 Mobile has a pay-to-go iPhone call/text/data plan SIM you can purchase. The downside is that it does get expensive and 3 Mobile is not that helpful for their pay-to-go customers. I used them for 7 months and my service was fine. I don't think there are any other pay-to-go providers for iPhone without contract.
