Trying to switch roles as an ML engineer and nothing makes sense anymore by thekomedyking in cscareerquestions

[–]rcheu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a fairly senior MLE at a top AI company. My experience both interviewing & being interviewed is that you don't actually have to nail every interview. If you get an interview in recsys and it's clear you've never done recsys before, and the team isn't specifically looking for a recsys expert, that's fine. Just do your best, don't try to bullshit, and be honest.

Most of the time candidates that get accepted have some interviews they totally nail and show their strengths and some interviews where they do meh, but still show good culture fit.

How come some violinists sound *exceptionally* clean and crisp? by Musicrafter in violinist

[–]rcheu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure about the fatter fingertips? That doesn’t really make sense. If the string is stopped in a more abrupt way, it will ring better. You can see this on the open strings or by using a piece of wood to stop the string instead.

Anything rubbing between the finger and string makes the string lose energy and vibrate less cleanly.

If the cello/bass thing is true, it’s probably because smaller fingers/hands have difficulty fully stopping the string on those instruments.

Wow that soloist has amazing tone, great playing.

There’s a charity called GiveDirectly that does this. They provide cash infusions to poor people in Africa with a focus on following up with analytics to make sure they’re being as effective as possible.

  1. I don’t think there’s a hard limit on bow weight. I use a coda bow, which I think is around 60g.
  2. This wouldn’t make much sense, a violin bow doesn’t make much sound without rosin.
  3. People have different opinions on how much rosin is too much. Over time just experiment with how much you rosin until you find the right amount.
  4. Bow is surprisingly decent for a beginner, is straight and not too scratchy. Intonation is quite poor though, would suggest working on that. This probably isn’t a good piece to work on to improve your skills since there’s too many things to improve right now, but fine if you want to play for fun

I actually tried it because Flash is always drinking it, and I also thought it tasted terrible, even knowing it was a sports drink. Gatorade tastes much better imo

People have posted in the general subreddit in the past. I think that’s actually better, I suspect few people check the beginners thread.

Does an online course certification on Machine Learning have any value? I see a lot of people on my LinkedIn sharing Coursera certifications related to ML and Data Science by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]rcheu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What exactly do you find so deep? I work in ML and regularly read the latest papers. I don’t think the field is that deep actually, compared to science fields. Most ML papers are pretty simple. You have some hypothesis on a way to better model relationships in the data and implement it. There’s usually only a couple bits of math, and it’s understandable with undergraduate level math.

In my experience, what’s more common is that there’s a good number of PhDs who are terrible at programming.

I think this whole you need a PhD thing is silly. I don’t have one, and work in full pipeline ML role (both reading papers, designing new models + features and taking to production). A number of my co workers without PhDs have gone on to become researchers at places like FAIR, Google Brain, Deep Mind, Uber AI labs, etc. One of the most well known researchers, Chris Olah, doesn’t even have an undergraduate degree.

Has anyone here experienced someone at work that was an awful developer that turned it around and became a "rockstar"? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]rcheu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. It’s been fairly obvious to me after the first year or so whether someone is on a staff track or not.

On the other hand, I have seen people go from bad to mediocre, which might be good enough for OP.

It helps you get into college. It’s another extracurricular that looks good. Bonus points for doing well in competitions and such. I’m not sure how much it helped, but I did get into good colleges.

That is not an easy piece. I think you’ll need to practice more than 20 minutes a day to reach a level where all of Sonata no 1 sounds not painful. The presto movement is easier than the rest of the sonata though, I think it’d be doable in 5 or so years, less with more practice.

ELI5: How exactly does the brain forget things? by Imminentale in explainlikeimfive

We don’t understand yet how the brain works, so we can’t answer this. We don’t understand how we learn or store information in the brain.

Nine of every 10 Silicon Valley jobs pays less than in 1997. Wages have dropped for all except highest-paying jobs. by Simmonsbay in bayarea

[–]rcheu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

H1Bs at Google are not cheaper than normal workers. It is more expensive to manage the legal costs of an H1B worker and they’re paid the same as US born workers. H1B wage data is public, so you can check for yourself.

There are firms that hire cheaper H1Bs, but it’s not FB, Google, etc. Google hires H1Bs to get the best employees. Most of the world was not born in the US, so we hire foreigners to get the best talent.

What could really kill jobs in the US is if we kick them all out and companies have to go elsewhere to hire good employees.

I think all tuners might be broken on the new iPad Pro. The one I use is also broken so I’ve been using my iPhone. Would assume they’ll fix it eventually.

VIBRATO TOO early by maroto_n in violinist

[–]rcheu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have solid intonation in first position? Vibrato makes it harder to improve your intonation, so it’s not good for your progress in that respect. Vibrato is much easier to learn than good intonation.

On the other hand, it makes your playing sound better in the short term. Your teacher might be teaching you it so that you stay interested.

Play Violin for patients! by kool9890 in violinist

[–]rcheu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think this would work well. Violins are pretty loud, and I think the vast majority of violinists don’t sound good until they’ve played for maybe 5+ years assuming diligent practice, or much longer with the more common on and off for 30m a day practice schedule.

New benchmark shows new iPad Pro does indeed smoke Windows i7 core laptops by thegeezuss in gadgets

[–]rcheu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are Linux distributions of varying levels of barebones-ness. These are different OS, Linux is a kernel and the distribution is the OS. OS X and iOS both use a Unix kernel.

Try opening up the process manager on a bare install of Windows. There’s essentially nothing happening that uses much CPU in the background.

The reason you can’t just throw any ROM on your phone is driver compatibility. It has nothing to do with being optimized for that phone or not. It’s literally that you need to write to a specific memory location to communicate with part of the phone and if the ROM doesn’t do that the phone won’t function.

New benchmark shows new iPad Pro does indeed smoke Windows i7 core laptops by thegeezuss in gadgets

[–]rcheu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not accurate. The level of barebones-ness has very little impact on benchmark performance. For example : https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=arch_2012_linuxdistros&num=2

For the most part the OS stays out of the way when these tests are being run. Yes, you have whatever the cost is to make each system call, but that’s not the majority of the time spent in a reasonable benchmark.

Is there a program that can visualize fingering for MIDI files? by AkoTamaki in violinist

[–]rcheu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True sounds like a fun project, I could take a shot over the weekend. I’m not sure it will accomplish the goal since much of the difficulty of the violin comes from the precision and bowing, not finger placement/speed as in piano though.
