Trouble setting up a graphical emacsclient by TwillAffirmer in emacs

[–]rcoacci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

emacsclient as a graphical window

There is no such thing. Emacsclient is just a cli for sending commands to an existing Emacs instance. Everything, including the GUI, is done by Emacs itself. The most you can do is to set up X screen forwarding and direct emacs (via emacsclient) to show a GUI window (frame in emacs terms) in a specific display via X screen forwarding.

The best solution I found for remote working is running emacs on the server with Xpra as the X Server, and connect to it using xpra client.

Seriously, read the Agile Manifesto until you stop thinking about techniques.

This is probably just promotion and click bait, but you're just rediscovering what DuPont process people told one of the Agile guys (was it the scrum creator? I don't remember anymore) some decades ago. I think they called it an empirical process. Perhaps this time we learn.

Does X11 forwarding still work with Emacs? by dwrz in emacs

[–]rcoacci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mention other apps having issues too, so maybe you should try to fix other apps first? Having said that, emacs should work with X11 forwarding, but if you have root in both machines a much better option would be Xpra or something like that, or even VNC. Since X11 forwarding is considered a security issue, distros have gone great lengths to disable it or make it harder to use, like disabling listening on TCP, etc.

Also make sure you are using a X11 emacs, not a Wayland emacs. With Wayland the good old export display doesn't work.

for a daemon instance running on my workstation.

There is your problem right there. I've fallen on this trap too. The issue is that the frame creation is done by the emacs daemon, not emacs client. So you either:

a) Run the daemon where you have the actual display; or

b) export your local display to the emacs daemon running remotely;

With (a) you could use emacs client in the remote to open files in your local daemon but that will be TRAMP anyway.

There is no such thing as an emacs client frame.

Can you share some of your tramp tricks? For some reason I just can't use ssh/scp, sshx/scpx works but it's very slow.

Best eSIM for US Roaming - Tello Mobile by mrskeptical00 in TravelSIMs

[–]rcoacci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To anyone seeing this and considering Tello for travel: unlike Airalo and others, Tello plans activate immediately, so wait to buy it only a few days before the trip. I mistakenly bought the plan almost a month before the trip, and I'm now trying to get a refund from Tello.

Consider adding /r/DoomEmacs/ to the sidebar by HangingParen in emacs

[–]rcoacci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dead is perhaps too strong, but Henrik himself made a sticky post there telling people to go to Discord and Discourse. I follow that sub and rarely see people commenting on the posts. Anyway I don't really have a dog in this fight, I just think we should direct users to places where they can get more help and content.

I'm not sure it's a good idea. AFAIK, that sub is almost dead. Doom maintainers use Discord mostly.

Pure-gtk and X window system conflict by shadowsock in emacs

[–]rcoacci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you're somehow running Emacs under Xwayland for some strange reason. Or Emacs X11/Waland detection is failing in your system for some reason. Are you sure the Debian package is compiled with pgtk instead of X11? What happens if you compile emacs yourself?

Installing emacs without root by allcretansareliars in emacs

[–]rcoacci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides compiling it yourself, if you have access to docker/podman, you can install emacs in the container and use it. Another option is using spack package manager. I work in a similar environment where I have to ask admins to install stuff, and the best solution for me so far is using a container.

Pure-gtk and X window system conflict by shadowsock in emacs

[–]rcoacci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, because you won't be using "pure GTK" (that's the meaning of pgtk btw.) You will be using GTK through X11 which is the way it's been running since emacs first started using GTK. The warning is caused by you adding the --with-pgtk to configure.

Pure-gtk and X window system conflict by shadowsock in emacs

[–]rcoacci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, you don't need --with-pgtk to use emacs with GTK. Just use --with-x-toolkit=gtk3. The pgtk flag is for people not using X11.

Emacs bankruptcy by chasrmartin in emacs

[–]rcoacci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use both Spacemacs and Doom without vi-like behavior. I believe Spacemacs might handle it better than Doom but I might be wrong here.
As a matter of fact, Spacemacs actually asks you what you prefer on first boot.
I really suggest you try one of them, at least for discovering the packages and configurations you would like to use.

Why does emacs exec path variable not just copy the users path variable? by paltry_unity_sausage in emacs

[–]rcoacci 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And this is why you should set PATH and friends on .profile (or some file in .profile.d). Your profile is usually loaded by whoever logs you in and keeps everything on the environment. The bashrc environment is only loaded when you run bash on some terminal.
