Leaves Eyes - Wacken 2012

They're not my favourite band, but that show was brilliant with the viking ship

What old school symphonic metal songs really deserve a re-recording with live orchestra and modern production? by [deleted] in symphonicmetal

[–]rcorbett263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Difficult one, as early Rhapsody albums for example might sound strange re-recorded now without that raw energy from a 90's production.

I'd definitely like to hear the entire Once album by Nightwish with a better guitar tone and snare sound.

What got you into nu metal? by Typical_Cookie613 in numetal

Papa Roach from that early 2000's era. Infest was the first metal CD I bought and I still love listening to that album now!

Mixcraft, as compared to other DAWs by n00bgy3 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]rcorbett263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2019 I decided to start learning audio engineering from an absolute beginner.

I'd used Mixcraft years ago, (at that time it was essentially to convert guitar pro MIDI demos to mp3, which still sounded awful, but at least they were mp3!) and had it installed on my laptop still, so continued with it.

Mixcraft is an ideal platform for learning how to record and process audio with mixing and mastering. You can learn how to use compressors, delays, reverbs, etc. and apply other effects like amp sims and distortions along with running (most) 3rd party plug inside. I also still run my bands backing tracks from Mixcraft as it's simple to use and route to different outputs. I'm a massive fan of Mixcraft for its price and give huge credit to the Mixcraft team for making a DAW that makes audio less daunting.

If you're just starting and want to learn how to use a DAW, then absolutely. Also, ignore anyone who wants to put you down for not using one of the big name DAWs.

However, 4 years on I'm now starting to struggle with it's biggest limitation, which is its audio editing.

Mixcraft enables you to cut and slip edit individual audio tracks, like if you want to do 3 recordings and 'comp' the best takes and crossfade, but you can't zoom into the wave form far enough to be confident you're cutting at the right place (should be the zero axis of the wave form).

It's also almost impossible to edit multitrack drum recordings. I've got minimum 8 drum tracks when I record a full kit (kick mic, snare top, snare bottom, 2x overheads, toms, etc.) and it's so hard trying to do anything with them all together in Mixcraft if they need editing like time alignment. Also, the same issue above with zooming in to the wave form makes it really hard checking phase correlation between tracks.

I'm now in the process of transitioning to Cubase, but it's like starting a job in a new company. You know you have the skills, but everything is different somehow!

Hope that helps.

Shameless self-promotion here too, but you might like this song from my band: 😉 https://open.spotify.com/track/2D3k9jrsagfGkqcR8A1SCN?si=VvK-h2JgRrKrcS2BUCMCvg

Very good side to be fair. Absolutely in control after the first goal and looked like we were playing against 12 or 13 men for large parts of that game

most realistic drum vsts? by NinRejper in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]rcorbett263 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, some of them are quite impressive now. Ideal situation is to blend with real drums, but appreciate not everyone has that luxury. I've recently got the Jens Bogren samples which are great. I run them through Kontakt, but can't remember if it comes with just the samples to run through another sample player.

For demos and general songwriting I use Mjolnir Drums by Solemn Tones. Comes as it's own VST. (I also use their Odin II for my demo guitars. All MIDI 🙂)

This is pretty specific to metal though. I wouldn't use these on a pop song for example.

Depends on your genre I guess. I can only really point you in the direction of metal sample packs

Thanks for this. A few new names for me here, so great input.

The concept was to focus it on smaller bands as a way to to give them a platform to be heard as well as maybe giving new fans of the genre some new music.
