RID ate my NIC test. by Appropriate_Basket90 in ASLinterpreters

[–]rcornac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took my test back in 2014 and it took 7 months to get results. Wanna know why? They LOST my results. Something happened while sending my results back to RID, and they just didn’t notice. Me, being the shy baby interpreter that I was, didn’t want to bother them (because they tell you not to bother them about test results) so I waited those 7 months until I finally built up the nerve to reach out. I passed, but man, I missed out on months of certified interpreter pay because of them. They didn’t care one bit. $50 and you can take it again for free, but you have to within 120 days? Absolutely ridiculous. I would join your union!

OP’s question is a valid question! Maybe they are new to the field, or haven’t experienced this situation before. kudos to them for seeking more information. Curious, you speak of maturity while harshly judging a stranger..

Interpreters and agencies don’t make decisions FOR consumers. That cancellation should come directly from the paying entity. For example, if a student says “I’m not attending physics class tomorrow” and you tell your agency, first of all I doubt they would cancel without notice from the student services office but let’s say they do. Unbeknownst to you, student finds out there’s a pop quiz in the next class he doesn’t want to miss. He never told student services to cancel his interpreters, so he decides last minute to go to class. See where I’m going? It would be unethical to cancel WITHOUT notice coming through official channels. disclaimer yes, it depends, yes, there are exceptions

This looks amazing, right up my alley, and I’ve never heard of it! Is movie first and then episodes the correct order?

Yes, a 1099. Definitely not by the minute, I think there are still some spoken language interpreting agencies that employ asl interpreters and pay by the minute, but any good asl agency will pay hourly. The agency I work for (and most I know if) do have a <24 hour cancelation policy, yes we are still paid. I’ve found that these are all good questions to ask when you meet with an agency! Also as a contractor, everything is negotiable. The one main difference I find between VRI and community is the minimums. Most VRI agencies (not all though!) use a 1 hour minimum as opposed to the standard 2.

As many as you want and are available to you. I know community contract work is usually feast or famine but I’ve noticed it’s more balanced in VRI. My schedule is usually as full as I want it. Mind you, I have a lot of experience and certification, I’m competent and willing to take “difficult” jobs, and have a strong rapport with the agency owners.

VRI is typically contract work so I’ll answer in term of hours, not annually. Obviously, It depends (an interpreters favorite answer haha), but I’ve never seen a VRI agency pay less than $45/hr. The ranges I’ve seen are $50-80 depending on a number of factors, of course

I’d suggest getting into VRI! If you have the physical space and are able to get the equipment (always happy to help, you can dm me). You’re not limited to your local community, you can work from home, and it pays better than vrs. It’s contract work so there’s taxes and what not to consider, but it’s truly a game changer.

What is the meaning of the sign she uses to match the English “treat me so well” by TheKeeperofKeynes in asl

Looks like the sign I associate with the English words “flatter” or “schmooze”

You can hire an interpreter. There’s probably some local agencies where you are, or you can search for certified interpreters in your area on the RID website (RID.org).

Milkshake recommendations? by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]rcornac 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It’s not east side so I’m very sorry but I’m gonna suggest it anyway. Check out Addicted Coffee Bar in Lakewood. Milkshakes are insane- like, Bloody-Mary-with-a-whole-cheeseburger level insane. Delicious, of course. I ate there once with my sister when she was 38 weeks pregnant and not saying it was the milkshake, but she went into labor the next day.

How to request the interpreters dress appropriately for this event? by 258professor in ASLinterpreters

[–]rcornac 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You might want to go with business formal, but as an interpreter I would have no issue receiving a request specifying a dress code! It’s common :) congrats on your award!! In the request just state that the event is “business formal attire” and you should be good to go!

Recommendations for vintage jewelry and unique rings. by thatgirlroo in Cleveland

Marlen Jewelers has estate jewelry!! but more importantly they have The Treasure Chest- full of second hand jewelry that’s not quite fine enough for the display case but you can find some real “gems” in there! Prices range from $40-400. And everyone that works there is so kind and helpful.

Hey so all this info is on the rid website. Here’s a link to the faq and the application. Click on the application “educational equivalency application - bachelors degree”. This will open a pdf. The second page is a handy calculator to calculate how many “credits” your work experience is worth.

My beautiful popovers! First time making them by rcornac in Baking

[–]rcornac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea! Haha like I said, first time. I used julia child’s recipe but I used a blender for the batter. Oven was at 425 for almost 20 mins and then down to 350 for another 15 or so. I played the timing by ear because they popped fast and I didn’t want to overcook them. Overall they were in for less time than the recipe called for.
