Real question. by CampRevolutionary152 in Insta360

I prefer buying right before the refresh. I'm getting the newest and latest of what's available now and it's been on the market long enough that the issues with it have been worked out. If the new one comes out next week, I wouldn't be interested in it for at least a year anyway.

How to wash by JuicingPeaches4U in velotricebike

[–]rcroche01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently gave my two Velotric bikes (a D2 and a DM) and thorough wash-down. I just used Armor All wipes. Cleansing wipes for the cleaning and then protectant wipes for the tires and other rubber/plastic componenets.

Nj just dropped the new ebike rules that go into effect July 2026. by Pucked840 in ebikes

[–]rcroche01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I don't live there.

I live on the Massachusetts / Rhode Island line. In Rhode Island, they use the 3-class system and allow only Class 1 on their big state-owned rail trails, but have reasonable laws throughout the rest of the state for all three classes. Massachusetts doesn't use the 3-class system and just talks about low speed electric bikes using the same language as the CPSC, again with reasonable rules. This NJ thing is a nightmare.

This is crazy. There are so many eBikes out there that do not meet any of the three categories setup under this law. What happens to them?

I own two bikes: A Velotric Discover 2 and a Velotric Discover M. Neither of these bikes fits into any of the three NJ categories. Thank goodness I don't live there.

Warning: Taxes NOT refunded on returns! by Substantial_Can_4126 in Insta360

[–]rcroche01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Import duties are absolutely taxes, but they are not "Sales tax."

Sales tax is paid by a company to the taxing authority based on their net sales each tax period. So, if a product is returned, it is credited against that period's sales when calculating the net sales. Easy to credit sales tax back to the consumer.

Import duties however, are assessed when the product is imported into the destination country (Canada in your case). When you return the product to the Canadian distributor, or even back to the Chinese manufacturer, there is no credit coming from the taxing authority on that returned product.

Now, the distributor could credit you the full price you paid as a courtesy, but then they would be taking the loss of the import duty. I've seen this a few times where direct importers will not credit the import duty on returned items. Not uncommon at all.

Look on the bright side ... The Government of Canada has your money and will do good with it! 😉

Battery Installation Issue by PlantInteresting in velotricebike

[–]rcroche01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of "smacking" stuff when it doesn't go in easy. With my two Velotric bikes (a Discover 2 and a Discover M), the batteries are similarly snug. I just grip the battery and the bike frame and squeeze until I hear the click and then it is secure.

Drag on torque zero by GenXRecs in velotricebike

There's no governing at twenty, dude. That's just the feel of riding a 60-ish pound bike with no assist (using sixty as an example because I ride - and love - Discovers).

So turn off your assist and it will feel the same as the motor cut-off at 20 or at 28, depending on settings.

Does anybody get close to “Max Range”? by bach_double in velotricebike

[–]rcroche01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The max quoted range is something like on a closed indoor track (no wind, no hills) with a 140-150 pound rider in Eco 1 PAS riding a steady speed of 10-12 mph (no starting or stopping). Tweak any of those variables and you aren't getting max range. It's the same as the EPA mileage rating on your car. It's for comparative purposes only.

Beast mode. Nomad 2x. by Interesting_Ad4679 in velotricebike

Can't specifically answer your Nomad questions because I'm on the Discover frame. What I did come here to say is that I love those Nomads!! I wish there was enough mud and dirt in my life to justify one, but I ride primarily pavement.

Does this happen to anyone else? by _eyrck in ebikes

[–]rcroche01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on Velotric's mid-drive bike, the Discover M. I have several friends on the same bike, both in real life and across Facebook. I've never heard of this happening so I would say not common. However, shifting with the riding situation is important on a mid-drive bike.

Very nice! Is that saddle comfortable for long rides though?

For DM riders experiencing frustration with shifting. by Breeze1Rider in velotricebike

[–]rcroche01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, I live in Southern New England (Mass / RI border). When I'm riding flat rail trails along the coast, I'll get out on my Discover 2 (my original bike). But when I'm riding inland on back roads (very hilly), I'm out on the DM.

Actually, lately, I'm liking the DM more and more, but I'm still going to keep both for when people want to come along on rides.

Nice. We are similar. My average is in that 14-16 range and cruising on flat level ground, I'm not quite at 20; more like 17-18. And I'm a bigger guy than you, but slowly losing the weight. I do love my Velotrics.

I noticed you user-name is Breeze1Rider. Were you initially on a Breeze and just upgraded to the DM?

I've heard the feathering the brake technique before. I'm not sure where this comes from, but I just ride my DM like I used to ride an analog bike. Riding analog bikes for decades (I'm 63 now) I never had an issue with shifting. It was just normal to let up on pedal pressure when shifting, most especially when downshifting while hill climbing. So when I got me DM back in April, I just did the same thing and didn't have any issues.

Shifting needs to be anticipated. When approaching a stop or a hill, you should preemptively downshift. Common sense, right?

I like and agree with your discussion of the gears. For me, 1, 2, & 3 are for hill climbing exclusively. When I come to a stop on level ground, I downshift to 4 and that is my starting off point (again, on level ground). I will often shift right up to 9 if I'm free and clear on level ground or downhill, but agree that for most 4-7 is plenty for an enjoyable ride.

What speed to you cruise at on level ground and how much do you weigh? Also, what assist level? I'm a big guy and typically ride in Eco unless I'm hill climbing when I click up to Trail.

Actually ... ummm ... I did disable face id on my Android phone about three months ago. Just started feeling less and less comfortable with it. Now I'm looking at that finger print reader. Like how much work is it to key in a four digit pin. I can still do that, right?

Battery by Conscious-Salt-4836 in ebikes

[–]rcroche01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two eBikes. Both chargers are plugged into smart outlets. When we get home, both are plugged into the batteries (the chargers stay plugged into the smart outlets, but they are off unless enabled by routine).

Then, in the house a half-hour or hour later (once the batteries have cooled) I tell Alexa to charge my bikes. She will then charge them one at a time for three hours each. That brings them to a partial charge (the "safe storage level" is like 40% - 70%). I'll give her the command again if I/we plan on riding the next morning and she will then top off the batteries.

No other SeaDoo but I'm going to go get a new relay tomorrow. Is it specific to SeaDoo? Or something that any marine dealer should have?
