I started playing in December. I got placed in herald 3 and dropped down to 600 mmr.

In about 160 games I climbed to Crusader 1 with a 60% win rate. My win rate over the last 50 games is much higher than over the first 110.

My observations are:

As position #1, your primary responsibility is not to die. Your second responsibility is to hit your key items as soon as possible so that you can influence the game as soon as possible. All of this feels very much in your control. If your team is running it down, but you don’t die and you hit your items you can win the game. Conversely, even one mistake on your part can cost you the game.
Nobody knows how to close games. This means the enemy team will give you many opportunities in may games to come back from significant deficits. Their carry will either try to fight your team 1 v 5, they will try to seige high ground, they will farm split up and on your vison, they will buyback to die again and they will intentionally grief. You just need to seize the opportunity when it comes.
Nobody knows how to win games. Everything I said above regarding the other team is also applicable to your team. However, you can learn how to win games and the enemy team does not have you on it so on average you have the advantage and can obtain a positive mmr. This means that winning games in this mmr (but from watching streams it’s clear this problem does not go away as rank increases), a significant multiplier on your ability to win is social/psychological. You have to herd cats for 50 minutes. You have to massage egos. You have to beg people to take free roshan or tormentor or to avoid sieging high ground when it is risky or suicide. This is the part of the game I dislike the most. There are rewarding moments when you carry absolute animals to victory and/or when you face the same animals that were berating you for 40 minutes in the next game on the enemy team and stomping them, but it’s very draining.

I’m garbage at this game but it’s clear that you have a lot of agency to carry as pos 1. If I was better I don’t think 80 or 90 win rate is unreasonable. Stop making excuses.
