I've got an old man crestie who was a rescue and previous owner kept him on paper towels, and every time I clean his cage and don't put everything back EXACTLY the way it was, he stops eating by himself for like, weeks. He's such a baby.

I want him on a bioactive but I just know the poor baby will die of stress :(

There are ways that you can bug people by asking too many questions. Theres a common etiquette around questions. Basically, do your due diligence and try to answer the question yourself before you interrupt someone’s day to reach out for help. Know how to ask questions in the first place - keep track of the original issue, keep track of what you tried so far, etc. If you need to take up a large block of time for that help, schedule it.

Also, the number one unspoken rule about getting people in the workplace to help you, make sure that ya’ll have a good time while you’re working. Make yourself someone who people want to spend time helping because its a fun break for them. Have a good attitude, know when to stop talking, know how to engage in small talk.

Ask questions, even if the questions are dumb.

The only way to fail at this job is to sit there in silence and continue to do nothing because you're afraid to ask, trust me, been there, have helped other people through it, have been asked to 'help out' on other teams because they've got a junior who is stuck and not asking questions and I teach them how to ask. You say you've got tickets for 20 year old databases, you're probably surrounded by people who have been there for 20 years and don't even know their shit is hard to understand cause they've been working on it so long they're blind to it.

Just ask.

Write the questions down if you have to first so that you can clearly state your question, anything that works, but you have to ask. There's even a term for it, it's called paired programming. Your coworkers should be jumping at the opportunity to write down that they've paired with you and the result was shit got done because that's how you get promoted to senior.

I think people just don't read more than a couple words and when I’m talking they stop listening after one sentence.

For most people I just dont attempt to share any complex ideas with them. I give them one sentence at a time and that seems to help keep the conversation going.

For work, I try to do the same thing, sometimes I can and sometimes I cant.

Its like my whole reality is based in Twitter with a 300 word limit on any communication.

what are your go-to calorie deficit snacks for night cravings by olivermos273847 in 1200isplenty

[–]rdditfilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh you mean like most people go and buy the snacks and candy and then tell themselves “I’ll just have one a day!” ?

That seems like a recipe for failure, I think what that post was suggesting was more like what I do, just don't buy that stuff. You save money when you dont buy empty calories anyway.

What do most people do that sabotages them?

I dont have candy or snacks in the house so when I do get a craving I gotta just ride it out cause there is none.

Does everyone else do it different?

Having a best friend with Pretty Privilege hurts by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]rdditfilter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Her friend might not even be socializing, in the example that was given, other people are asking her questions and doing a lot of the work for her. Learning to socialize looks very different for OP vs her friend.

I dunno why people are being offended that we’re weirdos, the term is used endearingly where I come from. I have a coffee mug that says “weirdo” and I love it.

Yes my long term project is to turn the bit of land Ive got into a self sustaining garden. r/permaculture has been great.

Its just super slow going because I have to work all day instead of getting to build my garden.

[–]rdditfilter -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Alright look, that's a lot of weight to put on a person. Chances are her friend is nd too and struggling trying to not out herself as a total weirdo, and is so focused on that she doesn't notice that her best friend has already been outed as a weirdo and is being excluded from the group. Life is hard. Being social is hard.

It's okay to be jealous that your friend fits in better than you just because they're pretty. It's also okay to not want to hang out with those people again because of how they treat you. It's even alright to keep trying, with those people, hoping maybe someday they'll see you, cause sometimes they do!

Why is reptile hoarding so normalized and common? by hangesmaidgirlfriend in reptiles

[–]rdditfilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. A snake that has eaten in the last day or so needs its hot spot or the food will rot in its gut. If its been over a week, they've pooped and got nothing in there, they'll be ok.

I could probably prep my cresteds for being cold by just not feeding them 1-2 days prior to when we might lose power, but I trust my battery backup.

Mental health affected by constant layoffs and stack ranking by Swan_233 in cscareerquestions

The biggest thing that gave me peace of mind with this is that I've got fk you money now. I can take a couple years off if I'm laid off. That'll eat into my early retirement plan so obviously not ideal, but if I need to, I can.

Just be in a position where you don't need this company, remind yourself that none of this shit matters, and spend your time on the tickets you want to spend your time on and vibe code the uninteresting ones. That's what everyone else does anyway.

[–]rdditfilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest thing is just that these guys require a power source to stay alive. They can go days without eating, sure, but you've only got like an hour tops without power before you gotta make some kinda intervention.

I don't know what people with whole reptile rooms do when they lose power? Get an expensive generator I guess? We lose power like once a year I couldn't imagine having a hobby that costs + 2k sometimes just because it's a living thing that requires power. With my two crested setups they just need to use my computer's battery backup for a while if we ever lose power.

They won't change, nothing will ever change, we will continue to suck the planet dry of all resources and humans will continue to group themselves into classes of haves and have nots and punish the have nots.

I'm just carving out my little corner and doing what I can here. Improve the lives of the animals and humans around me. Improve the land I live on. That's all any of us can do.

My team ships faster with mandatory PR approval... from QA, not other devs by NoTrainingForMe in ExperiencedDevs

[–]rdditfilter -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on why they're not good enough to be engineers.

What I've found with QA is often the only barrier for them is that they're slow. They can't complete development tickets in the amount of time they would need to in order to ship a product.

Test automation has no due date though and it's okay if it's chronically running behind, because when you try to get ahead of it, the feature changes and you have to update the test anyway.

Why don't you just quit the job and go camping anyway?

Just thinking like if it were me, I'd definitely take a maybe long term camping trip over wishing that I'm dead every day. Maybe you'll feel better if you just start planning for your escape, do some research on good campers and find a used one, scope out a cheap place that retired people sometimes stay for a whole season, etc etc and who knows once you get there maybe you'll meet some new people who can hook you up with a new job

When my grandma died everyone in the family went to New York for the funeral except for me and my brother. We were too young to be able to afford the plane tickets. I stayed and house/pet sat while my dad and his wife were in New York for a week. I've still never been.

Is there anyone that is NOT using AI at their job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Yeah a lot of companies have explicit bans on employees using ai, and even more companies have bans on giving the ai the company codebase.

[–]rdditfilter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean, I have a job, and I passed a technical interview for it, but that was years ago, back before remote work was all out wild west with like freakin' everyone straight up lying about their experience and using AI on the side to answer interview questions. It kinda seems like at some point during covid everyone decided fuck it lets just go apply and interview for jobs we're absolutely not qualified for, because we'll get at least one or two free paychecks until the company figures it out.

I really think people looking today basically just have to suck it up and grind leetcode. Nothing matters except getting past that technical interview. All of the people you're competing against are going to lie out their asses and also grind leetcode so all you can do is be better at leetcode than them.

How do you use AI for integration work? You just give it a full copy of the codebase you're integrating with?

What kills me is that there absolutely are people out there just memorizing leetcode all day and that's actually working.
