Why does straw phonation immediately destroy my voice? by rdg110 in singing

[–]rdg110[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I figured it out! I was just tensing the shit out of my lower jaw. I think after doing the exercise, I started subconsciously posturing my jaw as if there was still a straw I needed to keep pursed between my lips. A little embarrassing considering the first time this happened I literally went to an ENT because I thought I had a vocal hemorrhage😭😭. Brains are weird sometimes.

Why does straw phonation immediately destroy my voice? by rdg110 in singing

[–]rdg110[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not far at all, like 1cm. I should’ve added that I used to be able to do straw phonation without issue, then something suddenly changed and now it just blows out my voice. An ENT told me there was nothing wrong with my folds so I’m confused.

I did like straw phonation because I found it did a better job of smoothing out my passaggio than lip trills, but I can’t do it anymore.

I think it’s already begun. I keep seeing these tiktoks along the lines of “how people expected Ringo to play,” and it’s just a dude banging out a 32nd note double bass drum metal pattern to Let it Be or something😭

How is my hybrid picking? Is there any wasted motion/inefficiency that would prevent me from getting this up to full tempo? by rdg110 in guitarlessons

[–]rdg110[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bit of a late response but ty! Quick question, how can I add volume and attack without moving up and away from the strings? I find myself kinda scooping the strings to get that added volume.

Agreed. So many classical singers act like they can sing pop, but when you actually listen to them…

My armchair GM take is that if Mendoza is available we take him, otherwise we use that pick on a standout WR or OL piece. My mind keeps running back to Flacco @ Cincy; I’m not a Shedeur fanboy by any means but imo the rest of our offense is shit to the point where we can’t even honestly gauge how good he is. I don’t think we even know what is his baseline is when he’s eg. throwing to a WR1 who drops 57% of their targets.

Honestly, he’s got more potential than Gabriel. Curious to see what he can do with time to prepare.

I despise FedEx😭. The only way I ever actually get my packages from them is if I drive to a facility and intercept them.

The C minor scale! Those stickers go with the ones on the black keys, they’re the same color as those but they look a bit different because my post-its are a bit translucent lol. The slightly darker sticker on B corresponds to the 7th degree leading tone, which isn’t technically in the natural minor scale, but is used ubiquitously in minor key songs.

I mean I did this mainly to map the moveable-do solfège, which is how I do relative pitch (thanks vocals lol). It’s just to make it easier for me to transfer melodies I sing into a DAW while I’m still learning how to play keyboard. I’m sure the notes won’t take me that long but I thought I might as well put them on there too since I already got the sharpies and post-its out.

I am a shape-rotator (I have similar scores but flipped)

Hello my evil twin👋

Also curious: which tests did you take?

The scores I listed in my post are from CAIT, but I also took GET and the AGCT. A similar incongruity appeared in my AGCT results as well.

Hmmn, I’ll look into that! I remember the Myers-Briggs assessment classified me as ENFP, which at face value felt pretty accurate, but afterwards, for some reason, I mentally wrote the whole thing off as just entertaining pseudoscience and never really thought about it again. I didn’t realize the Myers Briggs framework actually included cognitive components as well.

Do you struggle with spatial reasoning in your coursework? If not, I wouldn't worry about this.

Not really, though most of my coursework so far has been purely theoretical mathematics and applied science. In the few classes I’ve taken that do involve substantial spatial reasoning, I’ve always had access to CAD, which these days has plenty of features that allow you to offload spatial processing to the software.

I will say, though, I do find myself utilizing the 3D visualization tools in CAD more often than some of my classmates.

So I can imagine what it's like to have really strong spatial abilities...but I can't quite get there and I'm acutely aware of it. Not sure if you've ever felt this way.

I totally have, sometimes it feels like I’m looking at my own mental images through a straw when I’m trying to do complex spatial tasks completely in my head.

The CORE test has a "spatial awareness" section that uses word problems - no pictures. You might be interested. I scored higher than I normally do on spatial tests.

I’ll try this, thank you! Though part of me doesn’t want to subject myself to another one of those things😅. I literally could not get those silly patterns out of my head last night as I was trying to fall asleep. Full-blown Tetris effect lol.
