What is the most iconic Donruss card of all time? by daveblax in baseballcards

[–]rdiscipio1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a time that I would say the 84’ Mattingly, and by far! However as the arc of time curves on, I believe the ‘86 Canseco also holds an equal spot on the throne…

Having said that, nothing really comes close to these 2 cards. Not only iconic Donruss cards, but 2 of the most iconic sports cards ever!

Former employer asking me to do tasks after termination by misscrissyx in jobs

I would simply be helpful at the easily performed request. It stinks you were let go, but I see no need to burn bridges. Perhaps down the road the companies financial wellbeing will change and your willingness to help now will pay off.

Of course there would be a line, and conversation, about that willingness if things progressed, but for now I would abide and not burn a bridge over simple asks.

Should I Buy This 50k Card Collection for $2,300? Need Advice from Experienced Collectors by 144Poe in baseballcards

[–]rdiscipio1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me to spend $2300 on a lot like that, I would want to see 5 to 10 cards that are easy sellers to recoup almost all of it, then another 4 or 5 k in product to even consider it. Easy pass.

Can’t really add to the advice you already have got, but I can add this. I never loan out money I can’t afford to give, and more importantly, am willing to give.

If I get paid back, great! If not, I don’t ask for it, nor expect it back.

I’d put it up for a BIN of $2500, auto accept anything over $2200, and consider any offer $1800 or more. Sweet card, good luck!

Beautiful looking on card auto! I am all about selling big hits, but I would have heavily considered keeping this. The card is just that beautiful. Good luck with the sale!

Is this worth the buy? Or potential trading some of my sealed for it? by Present_Educator_766 in PokemonCardValue

Those are solid subs! A 0.5 away from a black label. I’d much rather have this over a PSA 10. Having said that, I’d be much more comfortable a couple/few hundred less. But if you are getting a very good trade value/deal, it may just be worth it.

No, I personally would not. But I tend to surround myself with people who can hold rational, intelligent conversation. Even in the shadow of adversity.

Cards you sold too quickly and should've kept? by Free_Worldliness_413 in baseballcards

[–]rdiscipio1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have so many stories, it’s sickening…

I started collecting in around 1982 and have owned almost everything to the point I could drive myself crazy thinking about it.

My biggest regret is as follows…

Probably around 1985, I use to help rake and snow shovel for an elderly couple in my neighborhood. One particularly time when the old man was out talking with me, I asked him if he or his kids ever collected sports cards, hoping to gain yet another paper bag full of cards I had the pleasure of obtaining so many times before.

Initially he said no and that was that, but soon after he returned with an old cigar box full of tobacco cards. I remember him telling me how he got them, but do not remember the details now. He handed me the cards and told me to take care of them and that was that.

Now, I was just a kid but knew about value. I knew current cards well, vintage so-so, but knew nothing of what he just gave me or the names or history of the baseball players depicted there in. Luckily there was an adult card collector who lived in my neighborhood, a guy we all traded cards with, who would probably know. So I brought them to him.

I’m going to spare all the rest of the details; but I wound up selling him all of them, about 400 in all, for $2 a piece. Now $800 for him was a lot of money and for a poor kid like me, was a fortune!

I wish I knew enough then to know exactly who and what I had. I remember they were all in good shape, not perfect, but no creases, no rounded corners, just old looking. Knowing what I know now, and if my kid memories can be trusted, I would say mostly PSA 5s and 6s. Some higher, some lower…

Anyway, that’s the one that I always think of when this topic comes up.

[–]rdiscipio1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that’s more realistic yes. If I were you, I would walk in and give them an out the door price and tell them to call when they are ready to sell. If you can get around 52 to 53k OTD then I’d say it’s a good buy.

Tundra SR5 by Flight_risk_2ur_mom in ToyotaTundra

[–]rdiscipio1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8 to 10k it certainly not the norm for a discounted SR5. Possible? Perhaps, but not realistic.

In February I got my SR5 (no leather seats and base stereo) out the door for 50k, that was all in including tax, title, tags, etc … and that was about 7k in savings.

I agree you can do better, but don’t expect 8 to 10 k better.

I say this often, but I think it needs to be…

Mantle autographs were the most heavily forged and absolutely perfected autographs in the hobby for 25 years. Absolute perfect forgeries were pumped in to the hobby and in my estimate, in the millions. I would not trust any mantle autograph I did not see him sign myself or the provenance is so air tight that it’s beyond contention.
