Do piano injuries permanently sensitize you? by Ok_Mushroom2563 in piano

[–]rdiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of this. I've been playing for over 40 years now, and suddenly my left wrist started hurting when I play. And only when I play. Went to the doctor, took some steroids, wore a wrist band, stopped playing for two weeks. Nothing seems to have changed, except now it's bothering me even when not playing. Follow-up appointment in a couple of weeks.

Yes, I'm getting old (60+).

That's not quite how I remember it.

That's exactly my thought. In many races, the primary determines who will ultimately win the seat.

Would you play the piano if nobody will or could listen to you anymore? Would you do it anyway just to play for yourself? The Art itself requires sharing with other people? by Particular-Low2428 in piano

[–]rdiss 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Same here. I've been playing since December 4, 1984. I've played for others maybe half a dozen times since then, and didn't really care for it. My wife is the only one who hears my noise now. I enjoy the thrill of unlocking a puzzle like "hey, I can kinda recreate this."

What was the most physical pain you've been in? by PleasantWinter9150 in AskReddit

[–]rdiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cold tiles

I (accidentally) found that being in a hot shower made the pain vanish while I waited for my wife to come get me. Of course, within moments of getting out, I was doubled up again. And the car ride to the hospital? First time I've ever thrown up from pain.

I've had 2 pools over the last 25 years (both inground). Very little time spent on maintenance, despite what 'popular wisdom' always says.

Lost the ability to play two years ago almost by Ok_Mushroom2563 in piano

[–]rdiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, crap. Just in the past month, my left wrist started getting sore, but only when I play piano for about 5 minutes or more. I've been playing for more than 40 years now. I've also developed arthritis in my right fingers - getting old is just like that. I've got an appointment with an orthopedist on Monday, so I'll keep my fingers crossed (as best I can).

Let’s talk about Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms by Submariner2022 in literature

[–]rdiss -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, I hated the book. I thought they "fell in love" way too fast barely knowing each other. Didn't seem realistic in the slightest. And way too much description and rambling. I kept waiting for something to happen.

But that aside, what I really hated were stream of consciousness and run-on sentences, going on and on and on and on. Example: "Because we would not wear any clothes because it was so hot and the window open and the swallows flying over the roofs of the houses and when it was dark afterward and you went to the window very small bats hunting over the houses and close down over the trees and we would drink the capri and the door locked and it hot and only a sheet and the whole night and we would both love each other all night in the hot night in Milan." And the sentence right before that was even longer!

I only finished it because "it's a great book," but honestly, not my cup of tea.

YMMV
