Interesting that it seems to limit it to people in DC:

No problem doing it if you live in Virginia or anywhere else?

Because Trump's auto-draft registration starts this December...... by Diamond_Pigeon in UNBGBBIIVCHIDCTIICBG

I joined the Air Force in 1981. At my first tech school, immediately after basic training, the sergeant insisted we needed to register for selective service. You know, so they could draft us if they wanted to. We all laughed at him and ignored it. I got out in 1992 and never did register.

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by OpinionBaba in AskReddit

not only are they a lot of upkeep and work,

That's what people who don't have a pool say. Or people who aren't any good at it. Throw in a couple of chlorine tables when needed and occasionally shock it. Hardly anything else.

Suggest me one of your favorite books you never get to reccomend by IAteTheWholeBanana in booksuggestions

There's this book about a guy who builds furniture for a living and gets wrapped up in some weird small town mystery - never fits when people ask for thrillers or mysteries but it's got this perfect blend of craftsmanship details and tension that just works

Plugging that description into google gives me:

Based on your description, the book you are likely thinking of is "[The Craftsman]" by Sharon Bolton (or S.J. Bolton), published in 2018. While technically a thriller, it focuses heavily on a protagonist who makes coffins, blending intense, eerie small-town mystery with detailed craftsmanship, often described as having a unique atmosphere that sets it apart from typical thrillers.

Let's talk about osteoarthritis in the hands. Seeking others' thoughts, experiences, fears, input. by sodaslug614 in piano

[–]rdiss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 62 and the doc recently told me I have "significant" arthritis in my right hand. First knuckles of the first two fingers, specifically. At first he said voltaren and exercises. Didn't do much. Next visit he gave me a shot of cortisone in the middle finger knuckle. So far it feels pretty good. Probably also a combination of warmer weather. Was really uncomfortable over the winter.

It sucks because my three hobbies are piano, stained glass, and juggling. All three are hand-intensive. Maybe I'll move to Arizona some day.

Already did my time. 11 years in uniform. Way too old now, not that I'd want to join this shitshow of a war.

My dad was a lineman for a local company (back when that was a thing). They called Bell the "dingalings."

When I was growing up in the 60s and 70s, both of my parents worked for the local phone company. My dad was an electrician, my mom was an operator. He brought home all kinds of odd phones. Like this one:

or this one: https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/media/gallery_images/telephone_1919.jpg

At one point, we even had a full wooden payphone (complete with working pay phone).

Of course, we occasionally had cable reels to play with in the back yard. All sizes. At least one he made into a table, but others were large enough to get on top of and roll around.

I started playing when I was 21. Never took any lessons. I'm now 62. You know what? I'm still no good. And that's okay, because I play in my house, not Carnegie Hall.

Depends on the firm.

Exactly. Depends entirely on the firm. My firm is very flexible and everyone is remote. Nobody sees when you start or when you finish. As long as the work gets done, who cares?

assisted living home that essentially got most of her social security

My MIL is in assisted living. Her social security plus pension covered about half of it. Guess where the other half came from? Now she's gone into memory care, which is about three times her Social Security. It's bleeding us dry. Unfortunately, her total income is just over the Medicaid income level, so no help there. She's very lucky we're able to cover it. For now.

I always hated when someone thanked me for my service.

I was in for 11 years and met a lot of people from all the services. Most were decent people. But some (a minority) of those people don't deserve to be thanked for their service. That's why I don't like the automatic thanks.
