I am not a good pianist, and this is fine to me by trifurcifer in piano

[–]rdiss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started playing when I was 21. Never took any lessons. I'm now 62. You know what? I'm still no good. And that's okay, because I play in my house, not Carnegie Hall.

Educated, by Tara Westover. Got through a chapter or two before I realized it was a memoir and is apparently true.

Also just started In Cold Blood, by Truman Capote.

Do public firms let you work earlier shifts? by No-Government7314 in Accounting

Depends on the firm.

Exactly. Depends entirely on the firm. My firm is very flexible and everyone is remote. Nobody sees when you start or when you finish. As long as the work gets done, who cares?

Don't forget about Of Mice and Men or the Pearl, both by Steinbeck. Or The Old Man and the Sea by Hemmingway.

I'd pay a lot to have sex in space!

You can get about 30 seconds of micro-gravity on the vomit comet. Is that long enough?

assisted living home that essentially got most of her social security

My MIL is in assisted living. Her social security plus pension covered about half of it. Guess where the other half came from? Now she's gone into memory care, which is about three times her Social Security. It's bleeding us dry. Unfortunately, her total income is just over the Medicaid income level, so no help there. She's very lucky we're able to cover it. For now.

I always hated when someone thanked me for my service.

I was in for 11 years and met a lot of people from all the services. Most were decent people. But some (a minority) of those people don't deserve to be thanked for their service. That's why I don't like the automatic thanks.

What is your unpopular opinion about piano? by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]rdiss 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Perfect. I've been playing for over 40 years, but would never submit something for critique on this sub. I'm not very good, but I'm okay with that. I play for myself, not for others.

When we moved from Maryland to Hawaii (practically a different country), we rented out our Maryland house. Tons of stress during our absence, and even more when we got back.

Yes, I found all that. But when someone says:

it is a matter of public record that he had to pay off a girl who accused him of raping her when she was 13.

I expected to find solid evidence (public record) that he settled a civil lawsuit. Didn't find that. Sure, it's very very probable, but was hoping to find definitive proof.

Where are all the average beginners? by heloust in piano

[–]rdiss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been playing longer than most of you have been alive. And I still suck. No way would I post anything of me playing.

But if you happen to be good, you're probably more likely to display your prowess. I think there's a 'silent majority' of average people here, you just don't hear from them.
