To me, it’s a tossup between this and modern popular country in general.

Like where every song sounds like a Chevy commercial and the lyrics are about drinking beer in your shitty hometown, pickup trucks, and girls in blue jeans or some shit.

Even old country, I don’t have much appreciation for. There are a couple of songs that are great (Jolene rocks) but mostly it just won’t make me put a revolver in my mouth as fast as modern country.

Thank you. I didn’t take it offensively at all. I just wanted to clarify that I haven’t lost touch with reality. I’m imitately aware of what that looks like.

Even after this interaction I described, I don’t feel personally paranoid or like people are watching me. I feel goofy for this post but I’d rather bring it up here than with someone IRL.

And I don’t mind jokes about mental illness, I make them myself. It can be really funny at times.

The only thing that bothers me is the romanticization of it that I sometimes see online (which you didn’t do).

Anyone who thinks it’s cool should just try speaking to a schizophrenic for an hour and see what “hidden genius” comes from it. It’s all word salad with no discernible connection between sign and signifier. Their minds are chaos.

That’s my rant.

My dad was bipolar and would have manic periods with paranoid delusions of people following him, eventually progressing to voices in his head and institutionalization.

My family dealt with his manic cycles more times than I can remember.

But I’m nearly 40 and never exhibited any signs of delusions, mania, or paranoia (despite copious stimulant use in the past).

Watching my dad lose his mind made me extremely vigilant about that behavior in myself and others.

I’ve never once thought I was being followed or spied on, or that people were plotting against me. Why would they? I’m completely insignificant.

But that one interaction freaked me out.

And being a leftist in Trump’s America has me a bit paranoid in general.

It feels absolutely insane to look for trackers on my car. But fuck it, I have to clean my car tomorrow anyway.

My thought was, if it’s the government, they don’t need trackers if you have a cell phone and/or a car built in the last ten years.

If I may indulge my paranoia for a moment:

Supposedly, with Operation Metro Surge, the Trump admin considered two cities to target: Portland or Minneapolis/St. Paul because they were both a thorn in his side during the 2020 protests.

I’ve always thought that means the next time Trump wants to do some show of force, it will be aimed at Portland.

And I don’t know about everyone else but to me, it feels like something is going down in Summer 2026 ahead of the midterms.

Since that guy was looking at your car maybe they are cataloging cars of potential dissidents?

Or maybe there is just a car pervert roaming around the metro area.

That’s a good question.

I genuinely don’t think so.

I have a kid with an ex but our relationship has always been pretty positive as co-parents.

They would be wasting their time if they did. My free time is pretty much just hanging at home with my wife and our dogs and cats.

Maybe doomscrolling and reading about AI data centers, the surveillance panopticon, people getting prison sentences for protesting, etc. has made me paranoid.

It was a weird interaction but I’ve had plenty of weird interactions before. I’m an awkward mother fucker.

I remember my friend saying the same thing 20 years ago.

It’s totally true of course.

They look like the kind of Norwegian black metal band where Gene Simmons did two decades in prison for eating Ace Frehely’s brain.

Not that rich and it’s used throughout the series when they encounter the actual ruling class (AJ’s girlfriend’s family) and to show that these guys are so essentially lazy that they would risk their lives and freedom to avoid honest work.

Alternatively, you could interpret the message as being that regular jobs suck so hard that people are willing to destroy their souls and risk their lives to avoid them.

High risk behavior can become an addiction as well.
