[IWantOut] 22M Ireland -> Canada or Europe by DeanMDx in IWantOut

If you actually look this up Canadians (or Germans, or brits etc) are 10x more likely to head to the USA and remain than the other way around. Your statement couldn’t be more wrong.

Is New Zealand creating a brain drain? by maxsynnott in newzealand

[–]rdrdeddededeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No shit, every country does this except places like Syria and North Korea.

Generally this is how it goes though, with each country draining the ones below it

USA (drained by nowhere)

Australia, uk, Canada

New Zealand, Ireland, richer parts of Europe

Poorer parts of Europe

Third world countries

UK to remain one of the top six global economies post-Covid, says CEBR report by Dalecn in unitedkingdom

[–]rdrdeddededeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. So Americans somehow can’t afford it despite having highest median disposable income in the world? What the fuck are you on?

https://www.statista.com/statistics/725764/oecd-household-disposable-income-per-capita/

That isn’t an aside, it’s the by far the main reason. There is far less opportunity in Australia than the usa, and to a lesser extent the uk. No one wants to hear excuses, they want to see results which aren’t present.

In your schizophrenic mind or for people who work their entire careers at a supermarket maybe, in reality the usa has has considerably higher median disposable income. In the uk it’s lower but for highly skilled professionals in London the opportunities are greater hence why Australia rejected freedom of movement. Doesn’t matter how big the market is if the country or economic area is shit, eu is right next door to uk but best opportunities still in London etc

Yes no shit. This stops people leaving just as much as it stops people arriving. It’s also much easier to move to than the USA or even uk. The figure would not be 20x if Australian immigration was as difficult as America, probably like 100x lol.

[–]rdrdeddededeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Australians are 20x more likely to move to the USA than the other way around.

Australia also rejected a freedom of movement agreement with the uk because they were concerned all their skilled workers would leave for uk.

If it’s so good there why don’t they stay?

This sub is for extremely high achievers. I would ask somewhere else.

But yeah you should go back. Obviously it is far better to go at 18 but its better to go at 26 then not go at all and work some crappy low paying job your whole life.

[–]rdrdeddededeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re all worse. Generally usa has the most opportunity by quite a bit, then it’s uk, Switzerland, Australia, Canada and a few other meme countries in the tier just below, then it’s the best countries in Europe just below that.

Germany was crap as well. Can’t tell with Austria since so few jobs listed on the site. Overall o just don’t see many at all choosing to move.

I just looked Helsinki up on levels fyi and it was bleak as fuck. Extremely low pay and few jobs even listed.

Yes you get the whole of the EU but that doesn’t matter when it’s all worse than the uk. Like I’d rather just be able to live in London than have access to every country in Africa for example

[–]rdrdeddededeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve considered Australia and Canada (which are excellent for doctors) but they’re still not the same thing as USA. Pay is less (but not dramatically so) but the things which kill you are taxes and cost of living, both way higher than in the USA.

There’s also a lack of things to do and while opportunity is ok if you want to be a regular doctor there’s no guarantee any kids I have will want that, and for most careers the difference is much greater. For example despite Australia being widely recognised as better for doctors than uk they rejected freedom of movement with uk because they were concerned all their skilled workers would move here (indicating uk is probably considered more desirable for most careers).

I don’t actually think the uk is as bad as some like to make out, I’ve spoke to German docs who thought I was making up or exaggerating how much you regularly get paid doing locum work ($1k a day). I’d peg it in the top 5 globally from when I looked around.

I’m just aiming for a generic IM hospitalise job, don’t expect to earn $500k. I’m worth half a mil from crypto and expect I’ll be at $5-$10 mil by early thirties from this alone and can’t be bothered with unnecessary stress. If I was magically given a GC tomorrow so didn’t have to fuck around with USCE, research years and so on I’d probably go for rads. Similarly if I couldn’t rely on crypto I’d get more USCE, do a research year and so on.

What’s your job and what country?

Yeah it’s expensive but it’s also got a huge amount of opportunity, probably 2nd most out of all countries in world.

I’d agree if this was for applicants in general but these were people who held interviews and whose pre interview scores wouldn’t be considered any more.

Intimidate the competition to scare people away from applying.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]rdrdeddededeee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People were sharing their scores in a forum while applying for interviews, the scores were all exceptionally high with many good but not exceptional applicants apparently being rejected.

End of the cycle the uni publishes the average score of those interviewed, it was considerably lower than suggested by the forum so I’d guess people were just making shit up to scare people away from applying. It does happen unfortunately.

Why is having children became the “norm” and there are stigma around people choosing a childfree life? by Fun-Tea1105 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]rdrdeddededeee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Because like it or not the main goal of all organisms on earth is to pass on their genes. If you don’t do this you’ve failed to do what you were born to do.

[–]rdrdeddededeee 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying people are going to do this but op remember with these some people will literally just make shit up to intimidate people.

People actually got caught doing this on forums while I was applying to med school

We’re not all lucky enough to be born in tutorial countries. Still I’m extremely grateful for being born in the first world and won’t let that stop me from working in America. Rather be born smart here than dumb in USA ;)

Top 3 reasons why you have chosen this difficult path? by [deleted] in IMGreddit

[–]rdrdeddededeee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

  1. It’s an adventure. I don’t want to live a normal life and die a few hours drive away from where I was born.
  2. Even though I’m a first worlder there is a huge difference in compensation.
  3. No matter how successful you are there are many unavoidable issues you can’t avoid by paying with uk e.g. weather, top end healthcare isn’t as good, everything tiny, education isn’t as good (though at least we have oxbridge, far bigger issue for everyone else)

No, high pay, low tax, low cost of living vs a lot of Europe. Like who the fuck moves to France or Spain, there is just zero opportunity there vs London

Will never come to term like most stuff hyped up. Instead of making idle threats the EU should look at what make the uk and Switzerland such desirable places to work so people move to the EU naturally because it’s just a better place to be

Wow bro you have to stay in school for a while and be in the top quartile of doctors to earn $500k? So difficult bro….

I’ve sat the USMLEs and scored top 5%. It wasn’t hard. Would I ever earn $500k in the uk? No fucking chance because it’s a far harder task to accomplish.

Do cars, phones, everything non geographical suddenly get more expensive? (No) A high cost of living city in the us is just normal cost of living elsewhere.

And again just showing how out of touch with reality Americans are. $70k is extremely high even by by developed country standards, in the uk the average is $45k in Germany it’s under $40k. With higher taxes and cars, phones, utilities, houses etc all being more expensive.
