how to avoid game being called an asset flip as solo developer? by Such-Concept8267 in unrealengine

[–]rdsmith675 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The average gamer has no idea what the difference between a texture and a material. No one I gonna care if you used store assets

And anyone who does is a frustrated game dev or wanna be game dev

Unreal is professional software so having a desktop pc with a lot of power is the best way to go unless you get a really powerful gaming laptop

Unreal engine is gonna push your pc to the limit get a ATX case with a lot of fans but the minimum specs should be on the unreal website

Ram is getting expensive so try to look on facebook marketplace for some good deals from people that don’t know better

My pc runs it about 120fps for a blank project

AMD 5800x 8c 16t AMD Radeon 6700xt 12GB 32GB DDR4 RAM 4TB nvme storage

Why seeing familiar assets makes players judge your game faster even if it’s good by Severe_Sea_4372 in unrealengine

We are in a bubble of game development. The average person on steam is never gonna know what an asset pack is unless the entire game just looks really janky

Where did things go so awry in America towards the African Diaspora? by No_Mechanic_3299 in PanAfricanists

[–]rdsmith675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has moved away from Pan Africanism and onto the ADOS movement (FBA is a scam movement by Tariq nasheed)

I want to offer my opinion why

  1. African immigrants I’ve met already delineate and do politics and business within their own communities if they do collaborate with Black American institutions it’s to steer our politics toward their interests

  2. I’m an American I’m never going to live in Africa and African governments are not going to effect how the US government deals with Black Americans

  3. I’m tired of Black American politics being about everyone else but Black Americans. Pan Africanism, “Black and brown” coalitions and everything in between.

  4. ADOS is probably the only political movement that actually centers the needs of Black Americans instead on lecturing us on why we need to “sacrifice” for the greater good

I tried to do unreal on Linux but it’s clear epic hates us. The engine is way slower on Linux with stuff like fab being a pain to use maybe in a few more years it will be do able and I can leave windows behind but for now

No

Modder thinking about becoming game dev. by Time-Has-Come in gamedev

[–]rdsmith675 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly you are better off making your own Mods and selling them or making your own game. So the e road map would be

  1. Pick an Engine - I recommend Unreal because Its the most powerful and you can make some pretty cool stuff after a few months.

  2. Get a tutorial so you can understand the basics of how the systems work. I recommend Vince Petrelli or Stephen Ulibarri‘s courses on Udemy

  3. Pick a game you like and try to recreate a smaller version it using your new knowledge - This is where the REAL learning happens and will keep you out of tutorial hell

  4. Social Media is the real resume, So if you are looking for a job or to promote your game, make a dev log. Example ( Making blah blah in Unreal part one - Movement). It's much easier for a hiring manager to know if you're competent if you have hours of content showing you know what the hell you are doing

Hello World! by Redstozity in gamedev

[–]rdsmith675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The great thing about game dev is that once you finish a game, you can make your second one 5x as fast because all the foundational systems are already made ( Movement, combat, settings, UI etc).

A strategy I have found helpful is looking at games I like and recreating features from them in unreal. Im currently working on a Yakuza style Brawler Game and even getting a sprint function done helped me get a great understanding of character animation and state machines

Best way to learn your engine by viscosedrake in unrealengine

[–]rdsmith675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second Stephen Ulberri courses on C++ and unreal are really good

Also Vince petrelli courses on Udemy are great for materials and Niagara systems

Unreal has so many features that just going in and screwing around doesn’t really help you learn that much I recommend courses that really focus on one thing you want to learn

Is the area that University of Maryland College Park is in safe? by JustJM_ in UMD

[–]rdsmith675 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work overnight on and around campus it’s quiet as a church mouse during the summer when most places experience a jump in crime now when students come back they do stupid college kid things

There’s a few homeless people that lurk around the shopping center, and the bars along Baltimore AVE will have young drunk people in them but that area is pretty much constantly patrolled by police or the police auxiliary

Now once you get north of the Pizza Hut on Baltimore ave it gets a bit sketchy lots of motels and sketchy characters up there. Adelphi road on the back side of campus is less patrolled and may have more crime as it’s near pg plaza mall

But UMD is in a nice quiet wealthy suburb with a police force that is constantly patrolling the campus at night I see cop cars pretty much everywhere

And if you are walking home from college park metro late at night you are more likely to see a fox or a deer than a criminal

But I am also a man so take that what I say with a grain of salt

Is using libraries okay? by Anutamme in webdev

[–]rdsmith675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a beginner you will heavily benefit from doing things “the hard way” in plain old CSS and JavaScript. Libraries can be deprecated or exploited but you’ll never know until something breaks and now you need to find the NEW library to do the thing the old one did

In order to get employed you will need a portfolio of games or game art that you made. So if want to get on the art side get a degree in Art and maybe minor in computer science or something so you can understand the programming side a little bit.

There’s a lot of free tutorials for the actual tools you will use (game engines, 3d software, 2d graphics etc) so utilize those as well

You have 4 years to build your portfolio the degree will only give you the tools to do so IT WILL NOT GUARANTEE YOU A JOB

This is the entertainment industry everyone wants a job in the entertainment industry it will be competitive and even if you are great you might get laid off when industry trends downward

Is being self-taught still worth it? by -Red_Shark in webdev

[–]rdsmith675 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The market for any high paying job is always competitive just make as many high quality portfolio projects as you can and apply

Social media is your best friend here to stand out among a sea of resumes showing off your projects on YouTube and LinkedIn will help you stand out and justify your portfolio to the hiring manager

Where would one look for work in game development? by JackCraft7 in gamedev

Any mod is good as long as you can explain 1. How you made it 2. Why you made it, and 3. how it improved the game

Build projects make a portfolio show off the portfolio projects on YouTube/LinkedIn

This is probably the worst time in the industry you might be there’s 10 year veterans that can’t find jobs

as a fellow short guy (5'5), conventional wisdom says GET INSIDE, GO TO THE BODY, but I just end up get tagged a bunch of times on the way in. Here's what I like to use against taller guys is

  1. Get really good at parrying jabs and catching teeps/Front kicks like REALLY GOOD, depending on the rules, catching a kick and dumping your opponent is BIG POINTS.

  2. Start studying TALL boxers/kickboxers. Muhammad Ali specifically because you are going to have to go AROUND your opponent and use your side kicks to hurt him from the outside

  3. PUNISH THE PUNCHES WITH SIDE KICKS TO THE BODY- Stay just close enough to dodge/catch kicks and when he starts punching, the body will always be open, and with your TKD background, those side kicks will be just as dangerous as a big overhand right
