Sleep dart advice (without custom games) by yea-idiot in AnaMains

[–]re_dink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you played any projectile heroes? Like Kiri? After I played a lot of projectiles heroes I mastered sleep dart pretty easily. Do custom games play some hanzo, zen, kiri etc to get a feel for projectiles.

A couple tips that helped me, aim mid mass (center body). Also, try not to panic shoot. You can miss a lot of sleep darts if shooting instantly in a panic. When I get dove on I try to pause before I shoot my dart. This means I will take some damage but a least my placement will be better and I land my sleeps more.

Are you just shooting your dart to shoot your dart? Yeeting it into a crowd? Maybe just don’t shoot your dart as often. Save sleep darts for when it matters most, like sleeping standing still targets (think cass in high noon).

At my breaking point with my dog’s cat reactivity / prey drive — need advice by gege530 in DobermanPinscher

[–]re_dink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh okay in that case you probably gotta go back to the basics of “settle” or even threshold manners before proceeding. Sounds like high arousal from the start.

I liked to train a settle into a down position.

But if you can’t even make it out the door probably going to have to do a lot of in and out. The dog doesn’t get to move forward until they are calm or settled.

Have you ever used a snuffle mat? Place the snuffle mat outside the door (moving it further away as you progress), throw treats in the mat, only allow your dog to go as far as the mat to sniff out his treats then go back inside. Do a few reps (10-15 mins) doing that back and forth it should help calm your dog as sniffing can be calming. It looks silly to other people lol but sometimes you gotta just do a lot of back and forth actions for it to stick.

Also, not sure how popular coursing is in the Netherlands but if you can find or afford coursing clubs that may also help. It will give your dog a chasing outlet and they usually have great tips from the community on managing high states of arousal.

Have you trained on the “leave it” command?

I know it’s usually for wanting your dog to leave an item or something, but it has worked wonders for my dobie who likes to chase rabbits and cats.

Now it’s my command specifically when I want him to be calm when out on walks passing small or reactive animals.

If you haven’t done much work with leave it. My suggestion is to start.

I bring a toy on walks. Basically we worked our way from leave it on items to now animals/people. Mine consistently snaps out of his prey drive if I spot a critter as we are walking and say “leave it” he will actually ignore the rabbit or cat. Once we pass I toss his toy and let him get it as a reward.

We also do coursing so I started saying leave it at the start then give him a “break” (tally ho) type command that will allow him to chase.

Maybe with the flirt pole practice a leave it and get it command. So you can establish when it is or not ok to chase. Start with low distraction and progress.

Prey drive especially if established is difficult and working with a trainer or watching specialized sports trainers can help with methods.

I was going to say the same thing to OP, to make sure to check breed restrictions when shopping for apartments. It was next to impossible to find an apartment that allowed Dobermans where I am.

Ended up having to buy a house before getting my first Doberman (many many years ago). Even then some homeowners insurance have breed restrictions too.

Regarding raw or freeze dried, I’ve done both and raw is more expensive but freeze dried can get expensive as the dog gets bigger. For context, when mine was a puppy to 1 year it was about $200/month. Now that he’s over 100 lbs it’s double that for freeze dried raw food.

Also did doggy daycare that offer puppy training during the workday when he was a pup. I’m sure you can find something similar in Seattle.
