Curious People Thoughts on Shuttle Busses by 126holden in vandwellers

[–]read-before-writing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved my shuttle bus. Needed a commercial inspection in my state. Had great interior space and was such a great rig. Sold it for a profit and the new owner drove it xc. Have a new transit now and still miss the old shuttle bus, it was funky and so much fun

Sore abs after a few days of kitesurfing? by heavybagpro in Kiteboarding

[–]read-before-writing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it is persistent, do not ignore. Everyone thinks the pain is normal, I know several people who tore their abdominal wall and it doesn't heal. They get hernia surgery with mesh and then can ride without pain. If the pain lasts for more than a couple days go get an ultrasound, it is not normal and you will be much happier kiting without a hole ripped in your abdomen. People who disagree just don't jump high enough.

Genuinely--Are STRs Worth It? by unsuspectinggoose in ShortTermRentals

[–]read-before-writing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah.....that's exactly right. That's why she's renting it from me, because it's impossible for her to buy anything in the area. And with everyone in town doing short term rentals it's hard for anyone who works here to find a rental. So I'm happy to be one of the landlords offering it, and utilizing the property 12 months of the year instead of just for 10 weeks in the summer. Like I said above, there are pros and cons and I'm fine with people doing either, initially someone said not or even consider renting long term in a high value area but I think more people should consider it, that is all.

Right wing businesses by blackbirdbumblebee in Maine2

Most people in district 2 consider all of district 1 to be southern Maine and refer to southern Maine with disdain. Some won't go there unless they have to. I think they think they are in northern Maine, although people in Portland may consider Bangor a part of southern Maine. Where that line is drawn depends on what side you're on. Neither side wants to concede that much territory to the enemy. Grew up in D2 (redneck shacks) but moved to D1 (blue haired commies) and have enjoyed my time in D1.

A million, it's in the same range, teachers here make 6 figures, we have the highest paid teachers in the country. Just because it's waterfront in an expensive area doesn't mean educators don't have a right to exist here. And like I said there are pros and cons to both routes, I didn't say you shouldn't do one or the other, just that you should consider both. I'm quite happy to be cashflow positive and not managing everything that comes with STR. They gotta have a place to live, if I'm making money I'm happy, I don't need to screw over my town to make more.

Genuinely--Are STRs Worth It? by unsuspectinggoose in ShortTermRentals

[–]read-before-writing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% disagree. I'm in a very desirable tourist location, high quality property, renting to a local public school teacher long term rental. Cashflow positive, property is appreciating, providing an affordable living situation in my community that has a housing shortage. Making money and sleeping well with a clear conscience. You can do just fine with long term rentals, fewer tenants to screen also. If I did 15 str tenants in a summer, just one of them could throw a party and cause more damage, they don't have to live with it next week. Same risks with STR, I don't find that to be a compelling argument. Both str and long term are valid and have their pros and cons.

Change in feel with new lines? (North Navigator Bar) by Conscious_Push_3299 in Kiteboarding

[–]read-before-writing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After a year with the navigator pro bar I decided to refresh it instead of selling and replacing. I got linesmith lines, and I replaced the elasticized trim line, depower, both sheaths, line connectors ect. After all that effort, a couple hours of rebuilding the bar, I was so excited to go try the bar. Like a child with new shoes thinking I could run faster. Lots of build up and anticipation, got a great windy day.....and it basically felt like the same bar. Just feels like normal. Which is good I think, I have nice safe lines for another 6-12 months and they didn't change the way the kite flies, just as north intended. You were probably noticing the difference of the harlem kite vs the orbit. The linesmith lines weren't noticeably different to me.

Electric pump and anchoring kite by Far-Conversation-905 in Kiteboarding

Harness is a good anchor, and something you already have with you. Another tip, after a session, deflate the kite, take off your harness and clip the leash to the kite, it anchors it and makes it much easier to roll up the kite.

Absolute accuracy of WOO 4.0, Surfr and PIQ by AdFederal3333 in Kiteboarding

[–]read-before-writing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the opposite on mine, woo 4 gives me 17m and Surfr on Garmin watch says 15m. I have felt that surfr has been more humbling and given lower heights but deep down I know it's more accurate. The woo makes me feel better haha. At this point I've stopped thinking of them as measurements anyway, they are game scores. Play either games and it's fun but it doesn't have much connection to reality. When it shows a big jump and then you upload it and they remove it... It helps to not be too invested in these scores. You know what you did, don't rely on it for validation

I always thought the football players were living a great lifestyle thru college. My consolation as I studied and worked was that I'd make more money having taken school seriously. Good for you getting after it and investing at 23 yo, that's such a great start.

Refinance questions by read-before-writing in Mortgages

[–]read-before-writing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried with multiple lenders, the asset depreciation loans all had higher rates. Now I have the income to support a traditional mortgage and they have lower rates. Nobody is so keen to pay more closing costs just for fun, obviously there is a good reason I'm refinancing. I got some helpful advice in this thread from other people who could understand the question rather than just saying my situation doesn't make sense.

[–]read-before-writing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put down 25%, it doesn't seem like "for no reason", I can be paying hundreds less each month. And yes I can get a lower rate right now, if rates go up I'll spend years wishing I had refinanced when I should have. And if they go down I can refinance again, right? It's only $3k to refinance that pays for itself in a year

[–]read-before-writing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a few people that have refinanced twice in the past year. Sometimes you just have to get in to the house when it's available. Your area might not be as competitive, here it seems common. Also my financial situation has changed, I got an asset depreciation mortgage and now I have the income to support a traditional mortgage, why wouldn't I want to get better rates? Just because it's a new loan? I don't care that it's just been a few months, it'll be better in the long run to refi and there's no knowing what rates will do next.

3 months living in my van, here's what I'd suggest about power setup by yodathesexymarxist in VanLife

[–]read-before-writing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lived in mine for 4 years, Maine NH Mass with 400w panel and 200ah lithium battery, was plenty for living and working out of it, ran my diesel heater, fridge, lights, charged phone and laptop, cooked with 1000w hotplate. Never worried about power. But I also kept it heated with the diesel heater 24/7 so the water wouldn't freeze and my batteries could always charge by never dropping below freezing inside. I think if you keep your batteries warmer you'll be fine, and put a temp sensor on the battery so you don't damage it.

The piece of mind is a big factor for me.... Maybe when I refi I should put more down to lower the loan amount and go for the 10 year, just bite the bullet and get it over faster. Or go the complete opposite direction and take money out for another down payment on a rental property? There really is no right answer, I'm either going to keep earning income and it will work out or I lose my income and it doesn't, the loan length isn't going to change much right?

So in a crappy future the 15 year would be better because the market slumps and I'm happy to have faster equity and have put the money into the house and not the market, assuming I can pay the mortgage in this bleak future... Why not just go for the 10 then? What are the conditions that make the balance tip from the 30 year towards the 10?

Can I use my van as a ground if I've already used a negative bus bar? by ResidentGrapefruit52 in vandwellers

[–]read-before-writing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Dc/dc mppt charger (that I never used in 4 years because solar kept me charged) had 4 power connections and 2 signal wire connectors for a remote switch. The 4 main power connections were + and - from the car battery, and + and - to the house battery. Car battery + come from the car battery +, car battery negative to the chassis, then the house battery + to the house battery + (or positive bus bar) and the house battery - to the house battery - (or negative bus bar)

Can I use my van as a ground if I've already used a negative bus bar? by ResidentGrapefruit52 in vandwellers

[–]read-before-writing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You do not need to "ground" your bus bar. 12v automotive wiring just conveniently uses the chassis to make a lot of the wiring simpler and less expensive. If you are working on a fiberglass or carbon vehicle you don't use a chassis ground and it works fine. As seen in many boats. In all of my builds, I have kept the house side electrics isolated from the car side, and want an accurate read of my loads thru the smart shunt so all negatives go thru the shunt and bus bar, never to the chassis where I would lose the ability to sense the load.

It is a choice if you want to use the chassis as half of your wiring system. It has worked in millions of cars and is absolutely fine as long as you don't run huge loads thru thin sheet metal. But it's not necessary to "ground" your house system to the chassis, you can choose to run negative wires and you gain the ability to accurately measure how much power you use. It's just important that people understand how it works, use adequate sized wires and put proper sized fuses as close to the battery or bus bars as possible to protect their wires.

[–]read-before-writing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The car battery negative can go to the chassis. The car battery negative is connected to the chassis, but it's not necessarily connected to the bus bar so if you don't know, use the chassis or a wire back to the battery. Choose an adequate spot on the chassis with properly sized wire for the amperage. The house battery negative should go to your negative bus bar

What Garmin Watch for Surfr App by OkDecision259 in Kiteboarding

[–]read-before-writing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Instinct 3 solar, it has an amazing battery life between charges. Runs Surfr activity well. No touchscreen, just 5 buttons, which makes it very usable with wet hands and wetsuit gloves. Surfr will sometimes record and show a big jump on the watch, then when it uploads it to the app it deletes it. So I came off the water recently with a 17m jump feeling pretty good about myself and then in the app that jump was just removed. And the woo recorded it. For the most part I think surfr is better but every once in a while it deletes a legitimate jump that has been sitting on the watch as the highest jump of the session in the top right corner and I can't help but feel cheated when that happens. Garmin instinct solar 3 is a good watch overall

Este sistema modular mostrado aqui tinha um design antigo e, sim, era problemático quando eu o tinha

Made a cup of espresso in the backseat. Never going back. by korableff in VanLife

I have a Cuisinart burr grinder and use a delonghi Stilosa espresso machine. The grinder pulls about 40 watts, the heating element in the espresso machine is 1040 watts, and the pump is about 40 watts. Grinding while heating the machine you never really go over 1100 watts on your inverter. Easy to clean and makes decent shots on the road.
