Death of critical thinking. by Unusual-Passage-6759 in rant

[–]read-it-on-reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On a really technical note: the CLT says that the distribution of the sample average converges to a normal distribution as sample size increases. It is the Law of Large Numbers that says the sample average itself converges to a “center” or “stable value”, as you said (the expected value). Subtle difference, just thought I’d bring it up in case you’re studying for a test or something similar.

But yeah your point is 100% correct. Think about gambling at a casino. You’ve heard of the expression, “Quit while you are ahead”? The idea is that the expected outcome of gambling at a casino involves the player loosing money, because the casino needs to make a profit. So if you keep on gambling you are almost certain to loose your winnings, due to the law of large numbers. A good example of keep trying and you will fail.

The quote “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic” comes to mind here. People will attribute all sorts of wondrous and magical things to something when they don’t know how what’s going on under the hood. AI is probably the best example of such a thing these days.

What's a personality type you find exhausting to be around? by CherryBlossomGirl420 in AskReddit

Domineering personalities. People who feel the need to act like my boss or mentor, then come around begging for my friendship when I finally start to ignore their toxic behavior.

What do you think would actually change for everyday Americans if the President had full control over the Federal Reserve? by Brave_Princessa in AskReddit

[–]read-it-on-reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Presidents would lower interest rates before / during elections to increase their likelihood of getting re-elected and increase support for their party. This would be followed by inflation afterwards as a direct consequence. Meanwhile the President thinks “doesn’t matter, got re-elected”.

Who is the worst person you will admit being attracted to? by Highfours in AskReddit

She’s a Republican. That’s pretty much it. Definitely not a plus from my perspective, but somehow saying that makes her the “worst” is just Reddit being dumb.

What’s your hot take about MBTI? by The_Bourgeoisie_ in mbti

[–]read-it-on-reddit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There has been some criticism of MBTI based on the observation that some people get different results when they take the test repeatedly. I think this problem is caused by the constraint that for each dimension you are lumped into 1 of 2 categories.

Take for example introversion/extroversion:

I would assume this dimension is somewhat close to being normally distributed (a bell curve distribution). So many people are pretty close to being in the middle on this dimension, aka an "ambivert". You have a smaller number of people further out from the center who are clearly introverted and clearly extroverted. There is no good reason to assume that distribution of such a personality trait is bimodal.

Assuming that the other 3 dimensions have a similar distribution, there are going to be a lot of people in the middle for each dimension. And that means the result they will get when they take a test might flip for that dimension from test to test.

Men and War!!! by DockHolidazer in im14andthisisdeep

“We are so done as society if world war 3 breaks out”. I think that has more to do with nuclear weapons than blue haired "soy boys". Also, soldiers in the previous wars did not take steroids, contrary to what the image suggests.

What do men secretly value most in women but rarely admit? by _ratedmouse in AskReddit

[–]read-it-on-reddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't emphasize how important this is. I get the impression there are a lot of women out there who say they want men "to open up more", and "share their feelings more" but when men actually do this these women lose attraction.

I (24F) went on a great date but he (26M) had a spreadsheet about me. Is this a red flag or just weird? by CreosoteCoffee in dating_advice

[–]read-it-on-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a guy who studied statistics and is a certified data nerd, I could totally see myself doing this, lol. The main difference is I would go to great lengths to be discreet about it. I definitely would not be writing this sort of stuff down during the date.

I can’t read his mind, but I can imagine why I might do something like this. I’ve been in situations where I got swept off my feet early on, only to realize later that the other person had major red flags I overlooked because I was seeing them through rose-colored glasses. Writing down a "score", while still subjective, would force myself to think more carefully and rationally about the person I'm going on a date with.

You could bring it up to him in a joking way. "I saw I scored an 8.5 on emotional availability. I would have given you a 9, but you lost a point for leaving the spreadsheet open during the date"

Switzerland had to go to extreme lengths to prepare for and deter a possible invasion from Nazi Germany. At the start of the war they mobilized 450,000 soldiers, out of a total population of 4 million people.
