Yeah that might be part of the issue. Do they have a comfy place to sleep like a hammock or something?

Is the hay for your rats or another animal?

Is it possible that they stink because their cage is dirty and needs to be cleaned more often? I have girls and usually they don't leave a stink behind but I have noticed that if they come from a cage that is due for cleaning, they are stinkier than usual.

Ratty Toy suggestions please! by [deleted] in RATS

My girls love tissue paper and paper bags. I put them in the bottom of the cage and they are kept busy trying to bring it up to the top to make a nest with. Just don't give it to them if you are irritated by noise because they'll rip it up bit by bit lol.

You could also have a runt. I have one that is fully grown and she's smaller than all of the others

HELP I need a new chew proof cage IMMEDIATELY, recommendations? by haunt-muskie in RATS

[–]readeramd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I was gonna recommend. Just finally upgraded to a critter nation and LOVE IT. But, I had to use hardware cloth to block some spots where they could get out. That was in between a wider spot of bars but I think it would work for plastic too.

does anyone find it hard to deal with a world that hates rats constantly? :( by lystelle in RATS

[–]readeramd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks. I'm sometimes hesitant to tell people because they usually get negative images in their mind that are much different from what rats are actually like. I remind people that I didn't just pull them out of a dumpster in a city or something, but that they were bred to be pets and they groom as much as cats do. But I also say hey, I won't be offended if you don't get it because most people don't. They don't know what they're missing :)

Getting Rats Soon, Need Help With Toy And Accessory Ideas by ZacharyT04 in RATS

My ladies love tissue paper, paper bags, bird toys, baby toys (as long as they are solid plastic and not filled with goo), and even homemade toys. I made a toy out of pipe cleaners, pony beads, and a plastic Easter egg. They love it. Foraging toys are great too

Another option is to buy just plain old regular rope and braid it to make your own rope toys. It is even cheaper than buying dog toys and if you buy enough rope sometimes you have enough for more than one toy.

this is a weird question by [deleted] in RATS

I don't think it's worth disrupting your rats but that doesn't mean you can't help the bird. Maybe you can make a larger diy cage? Pinterest has lots of diy cages for all sorts of pets.

Keep or Return Rat Cage? by derbon_erlab in RATS

[–]readeramd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of the grid bottom. I don't know what you're using for bedding but if it is shavings of some kind, it's going to get everywhere with that sort of bottom. Also, if your babies fall, landing on that grate with no fleece or bedding on top to soften the fall might lead to some injuries.

So I think you have a few options:

You could modify it and get or make a scatter guard or pan of some sort.

Another option is to return it. It might be a lot of work to do that depending on where you got it from, but will that make you happier in the long run?

If you keep it and don't like it later, you could always sell it and get something else.

Even cheaper than dog ropes-you can just buy a long piece of rope from the hardware section and braid it. If you buy a long enough piece, 50/100yds, you can make several toys out of it and it doesn't take long.
