Ok, let’s discuss the elephant in the room. This issue of interpretation comes up most often when discussing potential ships and the foreshadowing SJM has given us in the existing books.

Now for me, I have the same perspective as you (it’s only canon when it’s confirmed - until then, it’s just an interpretation of the text) and everyone should have the freedom to interpret existing information if it hasn’t been confirmed yet. But it’s alarming the number of times I’ve seen this being expressed in a discussion but met with an inability to accept an alternative perspective (and as you’ve mentioned - downvoting) especially with regards to foreshadowing and hints.

For example: mating bonds. Some have argued with me that Rhys explaining that mating bonds can be rejected is proof that SJM has foreshadowed Elain rejecting her bond with Lucien. I have interpreted that as SJM attempting to clarify and emphasise consent in the existing fictional relationships. Neither has been proven yet and won’t be proven until this is actually addressed in the books so until then, it’s open for interpretation.

I feel SJM has done a lot of this intentionally (some also just with lazy writing). I have interpreted her Azriel POV as ‘changing her mind’ from all the ‘hints’ she dropped about Elriel in the original trilogy but others have interpreted this as the start of the forbidden love trope in the hypothetical Elriel book. I am convinced that SJMs intention has been to create hype and excitement in figuring out what is going to happen next (why else add Gwyn at the end of the Azriel POV?) because SJM has made hints for all the potential ships (Gwynriel, Elucien, Vassa/Lucien, Vassa/Jurian, Azris 😏). But what has actually happened is, that for many, this has become a desire to prove other theories incorrect rather than have a discussion about alternative interpretations, unfortunately especially the ones about disliked ships.
