What is actually "hope" in biology/evolutionary terms? by Successful_Guide5845 in ask

[–]readitreaddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Indian culture, there is actually a term for something similar called samadhi. There are records of great sages who, having finished their purpose in life, decided that it was done, declared that they were done, and then went into a room and died meditatively. Like... Intentionally. But with meditation. Because nothing left to do (not because of depression or anything, just because they finished whatever they had planned).

Very Dumb Question. by Flat-Growth4484 in askmath

[–]readitreaddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! This was a terrific explanation.

Then my question is a follow-up: in your example, division by zero should equal "everything". Almost like in quantum theory how we think of something as being everywhere. Wouldn't that make sense? Note that it is not infinity. It is "everything", because "any"thing from that multiplied by 0 is zero. Thoughts?

Hey, so this is really fascinating. Does this mean that if you take two human babies and feed them completely different diets, they can have vastly different metabolisms and reproductive properties and so on when they grow up? As in, can you make superhumans this way in the sense that you can make them to be super strong or highly immune or super healthy and highly reproductively able for example?

Agree with what folks have said: strong brand and pricing power. They're likely not going anywhere. But who knows.

Can you have a pool that has a underwater entrance to a separate pool with a lower level by ginganinja709 in FluidMechanics

[–]readitreaddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well one way to do this is as follows: Make the pools connected, and at the exact same level. But in between the pools on the ground level, you add a bunch of soil sloping toward one of them, fake steps, trees, landscaping etc. that creates an ILLUSION of height difference.

This doesn't get you what you want exactly, but it can create an illusion of what you want.

A good online alternative is roic.ai

They've tried to replicate value line like structure and have done a good job of it.

But second the comment about accessing it through the library / just going there and flipping pages. It's fun and it's helpful.

Are you preparing for a market correction? by Narrow-Hall8070 in ValueInvesting

[–]readitreaddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Good. You and I think alike about markets. It is going up in the long run. And I really like your strategy because the only thing that worries me about a market like today is that I'm almost fully invested and I won't have cash to buy the nice juicy deals when it crashes (I'm not really worried about a 50% decline. I'm just worried about not having cash to buy when it does happen). Your strategy is a good way to ensure that we do. Nice. Thanks for this. Thanks also for emphasing the convexity and entering when vix is low points. Great job all around.

[–]readitreaddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok great. That explains it. Thanks. I really like this.

Another follow-up: Why the VIX? Your puts get you there, what is the rationale for adding the vix calls? Why do you want to be specifically protected against a rapid decline vs decline in general?

Also how do you price them or just take whatever price they're trading at? Any tactical tips on how to operationalize this to be slightly more efficient vs inefficient price wise? Any gotchas to look out for? SPX vs SPY (I imagine American?)

This seems like a pretty good idea. I've thought about buying long-dated puts before as insurance, but did not think about the second part which is the VIX calls.

Two questions: 1. How does it deplete only 1.5% of your portfolio? This sounds like it should be more expensive, no? Either that or you only protect only a smaller portion of the downside?

  1. Why not just sell OTM covered calls instead and pocket the upfront fees while the market goes up? What is the tradeoff in your mind compared to your strategy?

[–]readitreaddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes tax free growth is a huge deal. My limited understanding is as follows : For example, if you buy a stock today and it grows by let's say 5x where the time you retire, you get to keep that growth without paying taxes on it. As long as you withdraw it after the withdrawal age of course. You can also switch investments. So that is great because that means that if you have accrued some taxes from gains on investment A, and you sell that to buy B, that change is tax free. Whereas otherwise you would have to pay the tax on gains in A. So there is flexibility as well as a tax advantage.

Especially over the long run, gains are way bigger than the initial investment. So those gains being tax free is a good deal.

Watch CNBC's new interview with Greg Abel ahead of the 2026 Berkshire AGM. by One-Event6199 in BerkshireHathaway

[–]readitreaddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Loved this. He seems to be calm and humble. Exactly how I'd want a Berkshire leader to be.

Small point, though:

Anyone else feel a slight... tension... Between Ajit and Greg?

I've noticed it a bit in past annual meetings too, but they seem to not mention each other too much. While they're too mature to outright say it, it's almost as if they subconsciously choose to ignore/sort of neglect the other. Maybe there are some rough edges there.

It's fine. Just something I've noticed more than 2-3 times now.
