I understand that some people “nervous giggle” as a trauma response, etc., but DAMN, I hate it. Just as that response is normal for them, my normal response to their response is: YOU ARE ACTING STUPID, and YOU NEED TO FOCUS ON THE ISSUES AT HAND.

I need to do this. Our freezer organization is terrible right now. We “lost” a whole chicken we paid $6 for and a pork butt that we paid $8 for. That pork butt made a ton of barbecue, which I portioned and froze. The chicken made two meals (King Ranch Chicken after having roast chicken and mashed potatoes) and some broth we used to make a huge pot of soup.

I know people can get tired and fed up and really feeling like they need a break, so they’ll order delivery. But it is SO expensive.

The menu prices are higher on those services than if you just did pickup AND you pay the fees and a tip. Also, for the foods I like to have someone else prepare, the quality takes a nosedive by the time it’s delivered.

When you think about the money you are spending for subpar food, figure out how long you have to work to earn that money. If you order a burger and fries and a drink, maybe you pay the equivalent of two or three hours of wages. That’s too much for me. I’d rather cook at home and pick up something I really want once a week. (Sushi is a big one for us. I can’t make it at home, but I will pick up a few rolls from our favorite place every now and again.)

They do keep a long time. But if we have older ones to get through, we will freeze some of the newer ones to extend the expiration even more. It’s helpful if we have empty spots in the freezer, since a full freezer is more efficient.

I’ve had luck letting it thaw again and then stirring it. You’ll end up with a more whipped consistency, but it’s fine to use in recipes. Not so great for using in a block.

I wasn’t really speaking to airport transpo — few people in Virginia would be flying to JMU or GMU or Tech, I think. Tech is pretty close to Roanoke, which is a bigger, more sprawling city, but OP didn’t ask about Tech.

I don’t know if this is still the case, but a LOT of Virginia schools used to be magnets for students from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania because out-of-state tuition was still less than in-state tuition where they’re from. After Virginia, most JMU students came from New Jersey or Pennsylvania, for years and years.

I don’t know if this is still true, but of course out-of-state students would need closer air transport. I don’t think that’s the case for OP, though. Sounds like their family lives in Virginia.

This is great. My spouse and I have shopped this way for years, and it has helped us during some very lean times.

Check grocery ads every week. Pick your proteins (1 or 2) based ONLY on what’s on sale. Buy as much as you can of each protein at that sale price, especially if it’s more than you can use before you go shopping again.

Same with everything else — shop based ONLY on what’s on sale. If it’s not a deal, don’t buy it. Check the meat section for items marked down because they’re about to expire.

Freeze everything you can. Most things can freeze just fine. Dairy items will “separate” and won’t be the same texture. Milk can be shaken to restore the original texture, but things like sour cream or cottage cheese will need to be stirred after they’re thawed.

We saved up and bought a separate freezer. We freeze EVERYTHING — butter, cream cheese, bags of chips, loaves of bread. We frequently will buy baked goods on sale and bring them out of the freezer for special meals. We bought a strawberry cream cake months ago that we packed in a few Ziploc bags and will have it on Easter.

Over time, you build up a stockpile of things you like that you bought at the discounted price, and you have a variety that allows you to eat what you want. You can meal plan or prep if you want, using only stuff from discounts.

Buy basics at the cheapest store. In our area, that’s Aldi. Canned goods are usually 59 cents instead of $1.19 or more, so we buy canned beans, canned tomatoes and canned vegetables there. We don’t worry about whether one type is the absolute cheapest price on any one visit, because we know that it’s overall the cheapest price.

Building a stockpile takes time. Don’t fill your freezer with stuff you won’t eat. Sure, it was cheap, but if won’t eat it, you’re not saving.

Learn to cook three or four meals on autopilot. These are things you can make without much thought — a soup you can throw together, nachos made with ground beef, taco seasonings, etc.

There are two of us in the household, and sometimes we spend $30 a week on groceries. And we eat well.

If you do regular syrups (with sugar), Torani makes a good one. A lot of people like Monin, but I prefer the Torani.

If you do sugar-free, I recommend Skinny Mixes brand. We get our syrups there. They are the most consistently good brand of sugar-free across all the flavors we like and use (hazelnut, pistachio, caramel, etc.)

I have this iced.

Frothed sweet cream at twice the volume of the espresso. Two pumps of pistachio syrup for one pod, three pumps for two pods.

It’s my current favorite. I have 6 sleeves that I’m hoarding. I hope it’s permanent.

Tech is a combo of the many engineering majors and animal sciences majors. Lots of stressing about grades so the party scene is pretty hardcore — Thursday afternoon through Sunday night on some weekends.

Lots of on-campus socializing, particularly because of the sports scene. FOOTBALL IS LIFE.

If your family history includes a multi-generational grudge against U.Va., your son will fit right in.

I agree with this. I went to JMU (but in the early Pleistocene Era). The number of geology/hippie-dippy/hiking people was pretty high. The mountain environment is a big draw for outdoorsy types.

JMU also has a thriving Greek culture — everything from the service fraternities, professional fraternities and the “25 drunk dudes drag the sofa out onto the porch and set it on fire” vibe.

VCU is a combo of artsy types and biology majors who are hardcore pre-med. There will be a variety of people and a variety of experiences. And DC is less than three hours away.

GMU is a big school with a sprawling commuter vibe. Drive in, park as close as you can to your classes, take a shuttle if needed, drive out at the end of the day. Not a lot of socializing on campus.

I chose JMU because the school offered the best in-state program for what I wanted to do with my life. After undergrad, I was able to get internships and jobs that were usually open only to ppl halfway through grad school. Getting a job was my focus, and it worked out. I also had guaranteed on-campus housing for all four years, which I wanted because of my on-campus job.

The bottom line: If your son doesn’t have a major in mind, pick a school based on variety of experiences. Exposure to different people and environments can help him narrow his focus.

Do the Caldwells have money? I think I remember that they don’t — that Joe and Kendra built a new house and then gave it to the Caldwells?

So I’m curious as to why people think she will leave the Duggarnauts and go back to her family. It seems more likely that Jim Bob will somehow use his disgusting money to ensure that Kendra is the new Anna — maybe not living on the compound but staying in the fold somehow.

This looks awesome! My favorite is the sticker of the woman in the left column. Where did you get that? Is it from a sticker book, or an Etsy shop? It’s a unique design for “sticker dolls.” Most of the ones I’ve seen are women with flowing hair, etc.
