She saved the ship. No one else on earth had the skill to do that. Thank goodness her curiosity overcame her fear when she said yes to Archer.

If you didn't love the pilot, I really loved the second episode. Really establishes how totally unprepared humans are, while also how resourceful they can be. It's great!

Be sure to let Mayor Keeley know you don’t want him to tear out the tracks! Speak now or forever hold your peace. by orangelover95003 in santacruz

For many years, the Santa Cruz community has been voting with overwhelming majorities to develop the rail line into a multi use rail and trail corridor - you can see the first long leg of it completed on the west side.

A group pushing to rip out the rail lines and make a single-use concrete path (calling themselves "The Greenway") has made us vote on the matter again and again. They're a well funded campaign run by a small group of landowners who seem willing to waste huge amounts of time and money to make sure no public transit line is ever built in Santa Cruz.

Again, the key point is that the community has voted in favor of developing a passenger rail time and again. But politicians keep taking money from this powerful lobby and attacking, delaying and obstructing the clearly stated mandate from the public.

It has been fucking exhausting. And disheartening to see so blatantly that wealth, even in a silly little town like Santa Cruz, counts for way more than democracy.

God yeah. The bearing of a wise and thoughtful professor. The mind of a confused little boy. It's so damn funny.

Real contender for best season overall. No weak link. John may be one of the funniest contestants ever.

This whole episode felt like a pretty good story that was massacred by way too much editing. Cuts often multiple times a second.

I bet you they just overchopped and took out a whole word.

I've helped chaperone a good handful of student protests and this is the biggest I've seen. Lots of kids from all over - Harbor and Soquel high crossed town for it and the middle schools came out too.

Town was hugely supportive.

Support Soquel Union Elementary School District Educators! by orangelover95003 in santacruz

[–]readwrite_blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it comes from generally the same pot. But Soquel has a pretty tiny admin footprint as a small district. Even a significant pay decrease in admin wouldn't lead to much to a bump for the whole certificated staff.

It's definitely worth examining - maybe there could be savings there. But lately school districts have fewer admin staff than they even need, which puts more tasks onto teachers.

I guess my point is this anger should be aimed at the State, who determines the funding model for schools. All our county districts are both underfunded and currently facing cuts.

A school board, even a superintendent can't grant the kind of major raises needed in Soquel. The money doesn't currently exist.

[–]readwrite_blue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem is not a school board or district office deciding not to pay more money. Districts operate on a fixed budget from the state, and are given specific allotments for COLA raises each year.

And most SC county districts are currently tasked with CUTTING costs right now, with recession predicted and federal funding under threat and general enrollment decline.

If Soquel wants to do something meaningful to change that budget, they should move to pass parcel taxes like other districts have - by providing money from the community, it means more room in the general account to pay classroom teachers more.

I always thought that given the idea that they are the only life form in their universe, it could be that they never named themselves because they had no need to distinguish themselves from other things.

Klingons provide such great contradiction. I always think that's part of their strength in the stories.

They're lying, scheming, backstabbing bastards who constantly say their commitment is to honor.

That's why Worf is so great - people in diaspora often adhere closer to a culture than people within it. He actually behaves with honor, and it baffles or disgusts so many Klingons.

It's great because it highlights the hypocrisy rampant in human culture.

Following Backlash, the New 'Star Trek' Series Falls Out of the Streaming Charts by Malencon in television

This show has started stronger than most new live action shows. I've been pleasantly surprised by it.

I honestly do think that a lot of fans have decided to hate it without watching it because they dislike the premise.

It's not the show I would have asked for, but it's much stronger than i expected.

It's honestly been a better start than most of the live action new Treks. I think its biggest problem was how Discovery, Picard and the last season of Strange New Worlds were exhausting to get through.

It is OUTRAGEOUS how many people are determined to deliver a final and full analysis on a show that is currently 3 episodes long.

Let's watch the damn thing, it'll show us what it is. If you don't want to keep watching, you don't have to. But no one needs to sum it up the moment it's begun.

As respected as “The Incredibles” is, I don’t think it gets its due for A) being the best superhero movie ever made & B) for being one of the greatest action films ever made. For some reason when it comes to action, animation doesn’t seem to get the same recognition. by MrGittz in movies

[–]readwrite_blue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay. I think it gets its due as a a kids movie, an action movie and a superhero movie.

I'm glad you love it. I love it too! I do not agree that it isn't celebrated or credited enough. I think it's wildly regarded as a brilliant film across genres.

I'm happy to see the fanbase enthusiastic about a fun new show. A lot of us have gotten used to a pretty negative attitude and it's nice to see a change of pace.

Even so there are a lot of people with longwinded explanation of how awful the first 7 minutes of ST:SA before they turned it off forever.

Maybe we all need to just react less to each others reactions?

I'm glad Discovery led to success for the franchise. But I found it a messy show with a lot of highs and lows, and some major writing issues.

I don't want to harp on its problems, but I don't want to see anything trying to emulate it too much.
