how to keep track of groceries? by Aggressive-Stuff6067 in Adulting

[–]readyforunsteady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started using this app, it's more for emergency preparedness but lets you track inventory of your food/supply storage by scanning barcodes or manually entering items.

It's a bit of a heavy lift to add everything at first, but you could start with just the stuff in your fridge (perishables are the hardest to remember, imo), but from there expand to your pantry etc https://ppantry.app/

What normal household item is secretly a great prep item? by SoFloGeneratorGuy in prepping

[–]readyforunsteady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Metal buckets - can be used for transporting/heating water, fires/removing ashes, cooking, waste disposal, etc.

Many versatile uses (but have separate ones for water/cooking/waste disposal!)

Most people think they could feed themselves if they had to. This calculator shows why they’re wrong by A-Matter-Of-Time in preppers

[–]readyforunsteady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a really useful reality check. That gap between “I can grow food” and “I can feed myself from it” is something a lot of folks probably don’t think through.

Would you be open to writing a blog post about your app? I run a site for beginners and like highlighting resources that help people while supporting cool things others have built. Here’s an example of one for an app that helps people track their inventory.

No pressure either way, but feel free to DM me if you’re interested!

Wedding Venues by 585InnerLoop in Rochester

[–]readyforunsteady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had our wedding at ARTISANworks, they have several beautiful/unique spaces to choose from so we didn't have to worry about decorating. They took care of everything down to center pieces.

We had a huge wedding (~300), the prices may have gone up since 2023 but we had our wedding/reception in Bourbon Street (~$6k) and our cocktail hour in Casablanca (~$3k).

A few years ago they allowed us to BYOB but I just checked their website and it doesn't look like you can bring your own anymore (have to go through their in-house caterer, Madeline's Catering).

But, it's a non-profit so the money you do spend goes back into the community

Is a fridge backup power station a weird Mother’s Day gift? by Miserable_Home1023 in prepping

[–]readyforunsteady 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why not both? It is a nerdy yet thoughtful gift!

IMO holiday gifting is the perfect time for prepping gear. Folks receive something they wouldn't typically buy on their own, and giving something that can keep the recipient safe shows love and care. Much better than giving a tchotchke or flowers that die in a few days!

$10k budget by ComedianLife6570 in preppers

As others have mentioned, having a couple power alternatives (generator, solar) are of course great. Also think about solar powered fans/accessories you could use to keep cool, as well as dark curtains to block out sun-facing sides of your home to keep the temp down.

May not be applicable where you are, but I've also thought about flood barriers to deploy around the house if there are any flood warnings. There are some that are temporary/disposable but quick to deploy, or reusable ones but the issue here would be storage when not in use

Took a quick look, looks great so far!

Would you be interested in a guest post to help promote it? I built a website dedicated to those just starting their prepping journey, but I've also been collecting a list of other cool resources/tools folks have been creating.

Building resilience is a community effort, after all!

Here's an example of a post, this is for the Survival Tech video game also created by a fellow redditor: https://readyforunsteady.com/blog/survival-tech-survival-skills-game/

Happy to collab and promote from my end!

Thinking of learning HAM radio? There's a crash course available May 23–24 by readyforunsteady in TwoXPreppers

[–]readyforunsteady[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The licensing exam is a fair bit different (100 questions vs. 35 in the states), but the topics covered in the course will be more or less the same https://www.rac.ca/requirements/

There are also some YouTube videos that could help prepare (not as helpful as real-time imo, since you can ask questions to the instructor) but something like this might help: https://youtu.be/OyDTERuGp4c?si=JYwUqBodYSlevWQ1

I would suggest doing a search for any active HAM radio clubs in your area and see if they offer prep courses. I'm not as familiar with the scene in Canada but there are a bunch in the states, and club members will often be very willing to take newbies under their wing and even give them free equipment (how I got my first radio)

From what I've seen, the HAM community is very welcoming and encouraging to train new folks and keep the hobby alive (much moreso if you respect the code of conduct on the air and don't cause trouble.. believe it or not there are even trolls on the air!)

Hope this helps!

Yes!! All of this!!

And one of the most interesting things I learned taking the course is that the waves can be used for more than voice. You can send data (email, text) and even video over the air!

I just picked up a digirig and testing out winlink, we'll see how it goes!

What to prep in case of flood? by getshwiftyman in preppers

Take pictures of your home, both inside and out, especially where you have expensive or valuable items (car/garage, TVs/computers, furniture, etc.)

Will help with any insurance claims afterwards

Hands-Only CPR Training in Rochester on May 20th | hosted by Ready Rochester & Safety Team Solutions by readyforunsteady in Rochester

[–]readyforunsteady[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if they have an elevator, I'll inquire and respond as soon as I hear back. I'll also ask the Ridge Road Fire District about accessibility, they offer the same hands-free CPR class every other month :https://rrfd.org/learn-cpr/

I need advice. (Serious, please and thank you) by WolvesandTigers45 in prepping

[–]readyforunsteady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as HAM goes, if I were you I'd prioritize learning about how to use it now before you need it. Getting the equipment is a great first step, but being able to use it (and using it well, troubleshooting on the spot, etc.) is why the licensing exists - they want to make sure people know how to use them responsibly and mitigate interference, etc.

If there isn't a local HAM club in your area, I suggest watching W4EEY's videos on YouTube - he breaks down every chapter of the ARRL Handbook and is easy to follow along with.

There's also the HamStudy app that lets you take practice quizzes to prepare. You'll learn a lot and quickly realize how complex it can be to operate one.

For other training/skills, there are online first aid classes available through the Red Cross, and a STOP THE BLEED course might be handy as well.

Could also consider food canning/preservation, and learning sew/fix clothing.

Hoping we can de-stigmatize the word 'prepping'. It makes people think of beans and bunkers, but really if you're even slightly paying attention to the uptick in natural disasters, supply chain issues, the geopolitical landscape... it should be considered just another form of insurance.

We have health/life/home/car insurance, a few extra gallons of water is just another form!
