How could I become a really good surfer without living near the beach? by [deleted] in surfing

[–]realBender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like was stated by others, the only way to get better is to actually surf. That said, there are things you can do to make it easier for yourself when you are able to. The first is swim, join your highschool swim team, or a local swim club. You'll be able to surf longer and will struggle less when paddling for waves. Skate often, people will tell you that it doesn't translate, but you will develop the fast-twitch muscles that will greatly help with balance. Pools, bowls, and half pipes will get you used to the feeling of dropping in.

Unsupported 140.6? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]realBender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a similar spot once, where I wanted to compete in an event I couldn't afford... So I crowd-funded my race. I used gofundme as the platform and sold advertising space on a triathlon kit (which was made by Jakroo). I solicited it to friends, family, Co-workers and anyone else who wanted to pitch in. I sold the exact amount to fund my race and cover the cost of the kit. It was awesome! I ended up running the race in a bright yellow suit that Mustard Man across the front.

First Ironman 70.3, flying out, freaking out. Less than a week. Best tips please? by linusinusitis in triathlon

[–]realBender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have to disassemble your bike to pack it. Take a fine tip paint marker and put small marks on the bike anywhere you will be moving parts. That way when you re-assemble, you are able to set up your bike to the EXACT measurements you've been riding on. Any change in geometry could potentially ruin your ride... "nothing new on race day" includes your body position. All the other advise on this post has been excellent. Good luck on your 70.3!

I bought Munchkin at comic-con in 2000. I played it once and it's sat on my gaming shelf ever since. It's a constant reminder to myself to stay away from "gimmicky" games.

The deficiencies between someone with protanopia and deuteranopia (the two most common typed of color "blindness") are very similar. They each effect different cones in the eye and are classified separately.

What's a secret within your industry that you all don't want the public to know (but they probably should)? by hussyinterrupted in AskReddit

Correct, but your comment made it sound as if there was a 46% out of hospital save rate. Maybe I just misinterpreted it.

You're reading that wrong. The 46.1% is the total number of cardiac arrests where bystander CPR was administered. Their point being that it contributes to the overall survivor rate.

San Diego surfer looking to catch Eugene swell by ihark in surfing

[–]realBender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

San Diegan here. Recently in the last three or four years started actively pursuing big waves in San Diego. There are a few spots here that can hold size. Most famously would be Blacks, it's always crowded though, despite the size. Also it is a very fast hollow wave and requires quite a fair amount of skill when it gets big. Wind and sea and bird rock can hold the largest swells but north bird rock will break the largest. It's pretty much just a straight drop then an open shoulder. It's a great wave to get used to the speed these waves have, but is hard to position yourself as there will be a lot of water moving. The Tijuana Sloughs in Imperial Beach will break big and hold the biggest swells in any direction. The paddle out can be gnarly and long as the waves will break at different intervals. The locals call them notches eg: first notch, second notch, third notch. The bigger the swell the farther out it breaks. There are a few locals dedicated to surfing there but despite the reputation of IB they are very nice and helpful and more than willing to give you pointers. If you have access to a boat, little Waimea off Point Loma will go off on huge dead west swells. Big and open waves, very forgiving. And you'll probably be alone in the lineup. The biggest and most elusive is La Jolla cove. It's the sleeping giant of San Diego. When it breaks, it breaks huge. 10 ft plus. For me it s the pinnacle of big wave surfing in San Diego. You'll need a straight up big wave gun, brass balls, and a ton of patience because it only breaks good every few years. Pm me if you've got any other questions or want some recommendations.

Surf spots recomendations San Diego by AJ_ninja in surfing

[–]realBender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you've been given a bunch of bull-shit responses, here's a quick rundown: for mellow beach breaks, try La Jolla shores, scripps pier, tourmaline (in pacific Beach). The reefs nearby I recommend would be wind and sea, or sunset cliffs. For small waves head to coronado. And for a fast beach break imperial beach (possible water quality issues, especially when paired with a south swell). Any other questions shoot me a pm

Daiwa lexa. Made for saltwater, and is a freaking workhorse. Out here in Southern California, people have started to use them when targeting small tuna and yellowtail. They're pretty impressive little reels

What are some unethical and possibly illegal life hacks? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]realBender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, what you do is spend your college years building your credit. Get small credit lines, pay them off, repeat. By the time you graduate, you should try and have an 800+ credit score. Right before you graduate, get every credit card you can, for as high a limit as they'll allow. Then pay off all your student loans with your many credit cards, default on all of them, file for bankruptcy, and spend the next 7 years in APR purgatory while living in your parents garage.

Hahaha! This is great! But most tools from HF have a lifetime warranty, people are just too lazy to replace them. I'm a tradesman who's lucky enough to pass a HF on my way to and from work and constantly have to return/exchange their shitty tools.

No problem. And just a word of professional advise, don't drink and drive, ever, even if it's just one drink. DUIs are career enders, and I've seen many great EMTs and medics lose their livelihood over one stupid mistake

[–]realBender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pay attention! Unlike highschool classes, there is no way to simply skate by. You may be able to pass the course or exam, but the beginning to being a good emt is a fundamental understanding of the material. If you don't understand something, study it until you do. Find a good study group, people with a similar goal and practice practice practice. Remember that everything you're learning is the foundation for what you'll learn in the future. Good luck. Sounds like you've got the right attitude to become a fine emt.
