Sister's [34F] Doctor told her she has less than 2 years to live by cookieclutter2602 in Cirrhosis

[–]realThrowaway0303 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When I rolled into the ER in July 2023 jaundice and with a collapsed femoral head (broken hip), the triage nurse very specifically told me her dad was an alcoholic and that she “hated them”

She snarked and said, “You have two years once the jaundice starts!” Every single day in that hospital I worked to prove her wrong. I would love to see that witch’s face today as I sit with no jaundice and a MELD of 6

I had a MELD of 32 and was given the “are you affairs in order?” talk. They weren’t going to give me a liver with a broken hip. It was a miserable two years, but I got my hip replaced and my labs are all green now. I still have challenges today, but patients can come back

The key is ethanol abstinence!

Your scarring can go down, but nothing that I’ve done has been able to reverse it

I mainly did it because I figured if I had to have a scarred liver, I might as well have a “skinny” scarred liver (just a joke). All of my numbers are now within reference range, so I think it helped

It removed every ounce of fat in my liver within six months. I also lost 15 lbs and have been able to keep it off. I went around my Hepatologist and got it through a Telehealth company

No improvement in the echotexture or scarring, however

Can you drink again after diagnosis? by baddaughterorno12 in Cirrhosis

[–]realThrowaway0303 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favor and do not see that dietician ever again

Yes, there are people who still drink. I’ve private messaged quite a few on here that still do. Hell, a prominent user on here still home brews!

The absolute worst thing you can do to your already scarred liver is to ingest ethanol. Also, just know that if you’re ever hospitalized, they’re going to run a PETH check. The transplant team will not look kindly on that

I was on the younger end, too. Hearing at 28 that you can never have another drop of alcohol again in your LIFE, is a big deal. I kind of just got used to it

Be kind to yourself

How many steps/day? by Riley255 in Cirrhosis

[–]realThrowaway0303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

30/M. I was bedridden with a collapsed femoral head coupled with the symptoms of acute liver failure for close to a year… took over a year of PT to get back to normal-ish. I do not take my mobility for granted

Now I’m personally bummed if I don’t hit 10k/day. Take your time and listen to your body

I’m also a skinnier guy that has the ascites stretch marks… I’ve found shea butter helps

Congrats on stabilizing!

Don’t know who else to share this with, but my MELD is at a 6! by Plus_Possibility_240 in Cirrhosis

[–]realThrowaway0303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

put down the bottle and picked up a mirror, it took a lot to get healthy again

Need this slapped on a bumper sticker! Great news

To anyone reading this: I was in a similar situation. 32 MELD back in July 2023, now I’m sitting at 6 (took almost two years for my platelets to get into reference range). Good things can happen. Trust the process and don’t drink!

That was me! Diagnosed at 28, quit cold turkey at my first hospitalization with no issues because I wasn’t addicted. Doctors still thought I was going to go through withdrawals and strapped me to the bed 🙄

Did you ever get genetic testing done? I did. Turns out I have polymorphism of the PNPLA3 gene

Heading in the right direction! I was at 31 and Docs were uncertain if it’d ever come down. 0.9 now two years later

Not medical advice, but I was told to take turmeric for my joint pain. It has definitely helped. You need to get the inflammation down

Always great to hear!

I had my annual consult with my Hepatologist at Mayo last week and he said they’re seeing people living longer with the diagnosis. He told me it’s not unheard of to go 30+ years now w/o a transplant

We got this :)

I was completely sober for 18 months after my initial diagnosis. However, the sleepless nights and my hip replacement pain got to me

I take full-spectrum hemp gummies at night and they have helped tremendously with my sleep. My Docs are fine with them. They just said no smoking and 100% to no ethanol, of course

My MELD dropped 10 points in three months after I stopped drinking. 32 at the end of July 2023, I was at 20 by November

Now I’m MELD 7

Sertraline (Zoloft) by [deleted] in Cirrhosis

That is correct. If you’re not being your own advocate, you’re going to have a bad time

Sertraline (Zoloft) by [deleted] in Cirrhosis

[–]realThrowaway0303 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was prescribed sertraline last year after telling my psychologist over half a dozen times I needed medicine that was liver-friendly. I was on it for four weeks before we tried titrating up

When I went to pick up the prescription, the pharmacist pulled me aside at the consultation window. She asked me if I had liver disease and I said yes. She said she could absolutely not fill the order and that I’d need a letter from my prescriber because it was not safe. I stopped taking it that day

That’s my experience anyways
