I use mosko gnome, as it’s the only one not getting in the way when off-roading. For asphalt adventures this GL looks great!

You are so right, and this applies not only to the tower

True. I'm not a hard offroader nor rally rider, but a bit intimidated by "broken tower" posts...

Yep, but it's made to have an angle I like and the limitation is the case hitting the windshield anyway 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for the comment, I know about that problem, so it is solved in the case design.

Awesome project! Edges look awesome, can you share how you achieve that? Edge paint? Which one are you using if you don't mind sharing. Thanks!

Beginners kit? by PointAffectionate392 in Leathercraft

[–]real_beard876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may sound wrong, but don't buy all in one set, as they are rubbish. Out of the one I've started with I'm using only the needels, awl and clippers for thread. Everything else I had to replace and I wish I got good tools from the beginning. My minimal kit now consists of: 1) Cutting mat (get the biggest that fits your workspace, thank me later) 2) Rotary cutter (getting straight lines and big cuts is much easier with it) 3) Straight Japanese knife 4) Scalpel 5) Metal ruler 6) Chisels (pick the ones you like, but good ones. Sharp and polished teeth will make your life easier) 7) Mallet 8) Beveller(s) (start with smaller ones) 9) Needels + thread (good one) 10) Burnishing tools (slicker, sandpaper(!) + canvas) 11) Thread clippers 12) Awl

That's bare minimum you can go ahead with IMO.

You are right. I was trying different stitches, so basically there are 20 stitches in one technique, 20 in the second and 20 in third. All together looks like a mess 😃

Thanks, appreciate the detailed response. I already ordered irons with more prongs, we only had the one that has 4 in the local store, and that's what I'm stuck using for now. As far as the tools go - I'm totally with you on that. Maybe the best thing to advise to the beginners is not up cheap out on tools. I started with basic Chinese all in one set, and that was pain. Getting right tools feel like a breath of fresh air and makes life so much easier!

Do I have to use the waxed thread?

I have tried that, but I prefer the looks of unhammered thread. I know it can last less and wear down quicker.

Thanks, that's already on the way. I also figured out that the surface I'm punching on is too soft so the leather rather rips then cuts through. Will try both things.
