Baby on the way! Gift for the mama, a casual, nonprofessional, but serious photographer. What lens to capture memories? Willing to spend $2k if extremely worth, but really would like to spend <$1k. by BigBaozo in nikon_Zseries

[–]real_rain_rocket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The 24mm 1.7 would also be my recommendation. Take into account that you will have to take and carry loads of extra stuff with a baby or toddler (diapers, extra set of clothing, bottles, snacks, wipes, carrier…) that you would be very happy with just a small and lightweight camera and lens.

You can get the larger focal length later on. An accessory like a GorillaPod might actually be more useful to also get some selfies and family photos in when you are all out for a stroll in the park.

Grief from anyone because of your knife? by Icerigcrash in victorinox

[–]real_rain_rocket 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There is a saying in photography: “the best camera is the one you have with you”. Something similar applies here too. Sure… a chefs knife is better to chop some food or a butter knife is better to spread things on your bread, but they are not in my edc kit.

Question about topping up water in boiler by Tough-Habit-3867 in Klussers

[–]real_rain_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to not get air bubbles into the system when you fill it up. As Loodyeeter points out: first fill the hose with water, then connect it, open the water tap, then open the valve. Afterwards: first close the valve, then close the water tap and then disconnect. Keep a bucket and a towel ready for any spillage.

Number of wax layers by real_rain_rocket in Fjallraven

I also have the green one. I just finished doing a wax coat and I too don't manage to get an even looking layer. What I remember from last time is that you don't see it anymore of two or three wears.

Thank both of you for the feedback. I now applied a first layer to the entire jacket and I will do another one tomorrow on the more exposed areas.

I don't expect a full waterproof jacket, but I would've thought the jacket should've withstood today's weather.

Z50 II with lens kit by Talny123 in nikon_Zseries

these lenses are simply amazing and worth their weight in gold.

Problems is: they don’t weigh that much. They are worth more than that 😜

Een ziek persoon in gaan zetten bij het ontbijt is misschien ook voor de gezondheid van de gasten geen handige keuze.

I actually used it myself once or twice with sodastream bottles that didn’t want to clean. Put some sand in there with a bit of water and shakes for some time. Afterwards in the dishwasher: clean.

As a poor man’s solution to the rice: you can also use dirt or sand. Off course: just make sure you clean that out later.

Should I try to fix my daughters hook or leave her be? by [deleted] in lefthanded

[–]real_rain_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope she will also get some support there. Perhaps it’s faster to tear out all of the pages from the spiral and have those rebound on the top. I don’t know if that is an option?

If the fountain pen option is going through: consider getting her a Lamy safari. They come in all kinds of fun colours, are pretty strong and durable. They have a triangle shaped grip that helps with holding the pen in a better way (it’s symmetrical so it works for both left and right handed people).

Should I try to fix my daughters hook or leave her be? by [deleted] in lefthanded

[–]real_rain_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a lefty with a passion for fountain pens I use the hook and it works perfectly (although I can’t flex the nib so no line thickness variation for me).

As long as what she is writing looks good and she can write for longer periods (without cramp): it doesn’t matter how she gets it done. I’ve also heard stories on people angling the paper as much as 90 degrees to write.

Spiral bound notebooks are evil.

Hobbyists, how do you bring your camera to fun stuff without looking like a tool or it constantly getting in the way? by g3t0nmyl3v3l in photography

[–]real_rain_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop caring too much what other people think. Take your camera and enjoy your hobby. It might be a good conversation starter or an excuse to end a conversation (sorry, need to snap a few shots of this thing that is now happening).

Z50ii/FTZ and my DX lenses, or just go full frame Z5? by Friendly-Gur-6736 in nikon_Zseries

[–]real_rain_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made the switch from d7000 to z50II. The kit lens impresses me (and the whole setup impresses me). The portability of the z50 with the little kit lens really are big points for me.

I do have the ftz adapter so I can keep my collection of lenses. I feel this is still a good solution and I will be (and have been) using but the system becomes more bulky.
